Eliminates Need for Vent Ducts

FlamQuench II,  Flameless Explosion Venting from Fike

Blue Springs, Missouri, July 1, 2001 - Fike Corporation announces FlamQuench II, flameless explosion venting devices, the latest extension to Fike's "Total Concept Explosion Protection" product line. The original FlamQuench has been marketed exclusively in Europe since 1992, and was tested by Dr. Ing. Bartknecht. Re-designed for the global market, Flamquench II will be particularly useful for venting explosions indoors.

Applied in combination with Fike's round explosion vents, this device extinguishes the heat and flame from a vented explosion and eliminates the need for explosion vent ducts. After successfully venting an explosion, Flamquench II is easily refurbished in the field. Refurbish kits consist of replacement filter assemblies, are available within 24 hours, and can be ordered along with a replacement vent.

Three Tons per Hour of Chocolate!

Cadbury Expands Chocolate Production

The Cadbury company is expanding its chocolate factory in Port Elizabeth (South Africa) by adding a production line for milk chocolate and white chocolate. Following the construction of its Enigma chocolate plant in Russia, Cadbury again chose Buhler.

Click herePrior to the project in South Africa, Cadbury conducted tests in the Enigma chocolate factory. The knowledge gained there was incorporated in the new project for a production line for milk chocolate and white chocolate in South Africa.

Line for milk chocolate

The two-stage refining line produces about three metric tons of milk chocolate per hour. It is equipped with a pre-refiner and two automatic five-roll refiners. The existing five-roll refiner was retained by the factory to serve as a standby machine. The variable speed of the refiner’s intake roll enables the employees of Cadbury to produce various chocolate masses with an end fineness of 18 to 22 microns with a high degree of flexibility. One of the two five-roll refiners is equipped with a product film thickness gauge allowing online measurement of the product film thickness on the fifth roll. This guarantees a consistent fineness with maximum throughput, even when product recipes change. The line is automated and is linked with a master control system.

Line for white chocolate

Buhler Johannesburg overhauled the existing pre-refiner and retrofitted it with a new homogenizing screw. In addition, Cadbury added a used five-roll refiner to the production lines as well as various belt conveyors for transferring the material to the existing conches.

Handling of sugar and milk powder

The special climatic conditions prevailing in this coastal region (high air temperature and humidity) pose complex challenges in terms of the sugar and milk powder conveying technology. In the new production line, the pneumatic conveying system feeds the vacuum drying and mixing vessel with sugar and blends of up to four different milk powder types. Great care was taken to prevent cross-contamination of the different recipes in the conveying lines. This is accomplished by a pipe cleaning system which reliably detaches even strongly adhering milk powder from the pipe walls of the conveying system each time a recipe is changed. Buhler also designed the powder handling control system, integrating it within the overall plant control system. The two control systems log all values and operations related to weighing and conveying, enabling them to be retraced whenever the need should arise. An “In-Touch” visualization system displays the process operations of the plant. This allows the personnel to check all operations without having to use the programming software of the programmable logic software.

Close partnership with the customer

When handling a project, the process and control engineering specialists from Buhler are always in close contact with the customer’s technologists. This proved yet again to be the key to success in implementing the Cadbury chocolate project. The company has its operators regularly undergo continuing education by Buhler specialists, resulting in a high production standard.

Buhler is the global technology partner for efficient production systems, engineering solutions and the associated services in the food processing industry, in chemical process engineering and in die casting.

People post their requests for help and offer their suggestions to others in our open forum.

Mr. Smith needs thawing bulk rail cars:

I am looking for a fast way (24 hours) to thaw frozen rail cars (100 ton covered gondolas) containing phosphate rock concentrate (12% moisture) after 5 to 7 days in transit at -30 to -40 Celsius. Conventional thaw sheds take 4 to 5 days. Direct infrared heating has been suggested as an option. Does anyone have any experience with this method?

Mr. Van Hoorn needs help with hopper designs:

I need one mass flow hopper design that will work for 7 similar powders. The powders are PE and have similar flowing properties. I can send samples of each for testing. I also need someone to recommend a suitable feeding device underneath the hopper.
