Crevice-Free Interior

Sweco PharmASep Solves Unique Challenges of Pharmaceutical Industry

FLORENCE, KY (July 17, 2001) - For more than 50 years, Sweco has been on the leading edge of particle separation technology. Now, with the PharmASep family of filter/dryer machines, the company has raised that expertise to a new level, developing a revolutionary separator that solves a number of challenges unique to pharmaceutical applications.

Click hereThe new PharmASep combines engineering modifications to screens, spouts, clamping assemblies and other design elements that significantly increase convenience, safety, precision and productivity in critical applications.

Combining Sweco's patented Vibro-Energy separation with Vibro-Dry vacuum drying technology, the PharmASep filters and dries product efficiently and effectively in one machine.

The result is a truly sanitary separator manufactured to cGMP Standards that can be used for wet or dry processes and handles up to 100 liters of solid product (particle sizes of 1 micron and up). With Class 100 Clean Room design and CIP/SIP capability, the PharmASep operates on a batch or semi-continuous basis and also can provide highly efficient size separation of dry powders.

The PharmASep offers a number of unique characteristics that address the specific challenges of the pharmaceutical industry. The sealed pressure vessel design, with a highly polished crevice-free interior, delivers high-yield product recovery while containing potent pharmaceutics for safer handling.

The "no-gap" design allows the unit to be cleaned in place without disassembly, significantly improving productivity while maintaining verifiable standards. The new sloped spout design results in more efficient discharge of the product, minimizing the risk of cross-contamination between batches.

Easy-to-operate clamp assemblies are secure enough to hold both pressure and vacuum. Tri-clamp assemblies are provided on all ports for optimal containment, more efficient external connections and, when capped, to effectively hold the pressure when steam sterilizing in place (SIP). Based on configuration, geometry and material used, 30 PSI of pressure or 15 PSI of vacuum can be applied.

By adjusting speed and direction, the electronically controlled motor can customize distribution patterns of feeding material on the screen, significantly improving the efficiency of screening and dewatering. The fully enclosed motor facilitates contaminant-free operation in a clean-room environment. A vacuum outlet, connected to the fully encapsulated motor, transfers produced particles from the motor environment to the outside of the process room while providing ventilation to cool the sealed motor area.

The optional QuickChange Screen Kit simplifies screen removal for quick and easy screen maintenance.

The whole system is enclosed and can be adapted as part of the operation in a semi-automated manner, making validation of the process easier.

For wet sieving (slurry) applications, the PharmASep was designed to:

  • control residence time on the screen by blocking the spout
  • dewater the product on screen
  • apply vacuum for as long as necessary to dry the product on screen while vibration is maintained
  • unplug the spout(s) and discharge the dried product.

This capability replaces the traditional transfer of the wet slurry to a vacuum dryer, eliminating a labor- and cost-intensive step in the sieving process that can compromise the integrity of the separated product.

Now in use in the United States and Europe, PharmASep is available worldwide and is supported by an experienced, international team of field service engineers. Sweco offers its customers a convenient rental program for performing field tests.

With more than 50 years of separation technology experience, Sweco serves the pharmaceutical, chemical, paper and many other industries with a complete line of separation, sizing and milling equipment.

Continuous Online Taring

K-Tron Introduces Open Frame Version of New Smart Weigh Belt Feeder

PITMAN, NJ  -- K-Tron International introduces the open frame version of its new Smart Weigh Belt feeder.  The enclosed version of the new Smart weigh belt feeder was introduced in 2000. Open frame weigh belt feeders are typically used in food applications where the process material cannot be hoppered or when interfacing with prefeed conveyors.

Click hereBoth open frame and enclosed versions of the weigh belt feeder offer continuous online auto belt tare. Automatic and continuous online taring of the belt reduces maintenance, line shutdowns and manual calibration. A second weigh bridge that measures belt weight before receiving material enables this function.

Laboratory tests also show continuous online auto tare improves long term accuracy. With improved auto belt tracking, patented SFT weighing technology and K-Tron's new SmartConnex control technology, the Smart Weigh Belt sets a new standard in weigh belt feeder accuracy and reliability.

Designed for easy cleanability, both open and enclosed frame versions of the Smart Weigh Belt feeder have stainless steel enclosures and a conveyor assembly that slides out easily, simplifying maintenance.

Superior Industries - Single Source Supplier of High Efficiency Idler & Pulleys

MORRIS, MN - The Morris, Minn.-based Components Division of Superior Industries is now a single-source supplier of idlers as well as pulleys, with the addition of its new line of heavy duty drum, wing and mine duty pulleys combined with its leading line of CEMA idlers. By ordering high efficiency pulleys and idlers together, customers can realize across-the-board quality while enjoying the package benefits of saving time and lowering freight costs by ordering from one reliable ISO 9001 certified vendor. Superior Industries offers guaranteed delivery programs that can reduce customer inventory, cut lead times and lower costs.

Click hereSuperior Industries' new, higher quality, standard and custom-designed drum, wing and mine duty pulleys are engineered for increased efficiency and longer wear life, while meeting all CEMA specifications. Each pulley is robotically welded on both sides of the hub to ensure maximum strength, consistent high quality and close tolerances. The line employs a flexible end disc design vs. the traditional, heavier weight, less efficient rigid end disc design. The lighter weight flexible end disc design takes advantage of the full load capacity of the shaft, while its lighter weight allows ease of assembly, maintenance and replacement. In particular, producers find the lighter weight, flexible design to be an advantage when used as a component within road-portable conveyors.

In addition, Superior Industries offers in-house lagging capabilities for faster delivery of quality lagging. Vulcanized lagging is available in 40- and 60-durometer material and in either smooth, diamond or offset herring bone designs.  Superior Industries designs manufactures and installs the shafts and bushings within each pulley, ensuring consistent, high-quality assembly. Shafts can be designed to meet specific customer requirements. Offering the flexibility of either the XT or QD hub and bushing system, Superior Industries' bushings feature a flange design that provides maximum cap-screw torque storing capacity. The flange also allows easier installation and bushing removal.

CEMA Idlers

As part of its ongoing quality assurance program, Superior Industries continues to fine tune and improve its leading idler line. Superior CEMA idlers surpass comparable brands due to the following features. They include: 1) the highest quality powder coating finish; 2) the heaviest roll shell thickness (7-gauge on 6-in rollers) for longer idler life; 3) easy-to-change replacement rollers at less cost than full-idler replacement; 4) and external seals for extra bearing protection.

Superior Industries CEMA idlers are available in a variety of styles - equal troughing idlers, feeder/picker troughing idlers, impact idlers, offset center roll idlers, live shaft rollers, self-aligning idlers, self-aligning return idlers, channel-mount low profile, rubber cushion flat carrier, flat carrier idlers, rubber cushioned return idlers, return belt idlers, and the 50 Series CEMA B Idler, the newest addition to the line.

The Series 50 idler was created to provide the marketplace with a quality product and a shorter delivery time. Its design objective lies in cutting costs without lowering product performance. Customers opting for the 50 Series Idler will save up to 10%, when compared to an investment in the 60 Series Idler. The 50 Series Idler requires less raw materials, and shorter weld and assembly times. This reduction in production costs is passed on to the consumer via a lower purchase price.
