..Enterprise System Control

WBF to Present Web Seminars on ISA/ANSI S95 Standard

CHANDLER, AZ – The World Batch Forum (WBF), a worldwide, non-commercial organization dedicated to the advancement of batch process manufacturing, will present a web-based seminars on the ISA/ANSI S95 standard on July 10; and a web seminar on performance improvement through the use of batch best practices on August 1.

Click hereBoth seminars are open to non members as well as members of the WBF. Attendees must register at the WBF website, www.wbf.org.

On Wednesday, July 10, at 11:30 a.m. EDT, Keith Unger, a principal consultant with EnteGreat Inc. and chairman of the ISA’s S95 Committee, will present “A Tutorial on the ISA/ANSI S95 Standard for Enterprise-Control System Integration.”

The ISA/ANSI S95 standard establishes common terminology for the description and understanding of manufacturing information in an enterprise. It also defines the information exchange between the manufacturing control functions and other enterprise functions, including data models and exchange definitions.

Among the topics Unger will cover are an overview of the standard; current status of the standard’s three sections; international status of the standard; and use of the S95 standard in practical situations.

On Thursday, August 1, Dr. Maurice Wilkins will present “Performance Improvement by the Use of Batch Best Practices – A Case Study in Progress.” Wilkins, who is director of automation for Millennium Specialty Chemicals in Jacksonville, FL, will summarize the approach at Millennium -- a small, two-site, batch operation -- using the industry standards and the best practices of much larger best-in-class companies. In addition, he’ll show how other companies can adopt these practices in order to gain competitive advantage and deliver superior results.

Registration for both seminars is free to current WBF members and $50 to non-members. The number of attendees is limited.

The WBF presents web-based seminars monthly. Future topics include:

  • Modular Design as Project Methodology
  • The WBF XML Markup Language for Implementing the S88 Standard
  • Project Management of Software Intensive Projects; How to Avoid Pitfalls

Compact and Low Cost

Evasser Bin Aerator Promotes Material Flow

Elburn, IL - Without the noise and damaging vibration caused by pneumatic or electric vibrators, Monitor's Evasser bin aerator promotes the flow of dry bulk powders from a storage vessel. The compact, low-cost Evasser requires virtually no maintenance and has an effective radius of 12 inches.

Click hereSeveral configurations are available to fit the Evasser to most bulk powders and granular solids applications. The Evasser itself can be provided in either cast iron or 316 stainless steel construction. While normally supplied with a black Neoprene boot, a FDA approved white Neoprene boot is also available. For high pressure or high temperature applications where the boot is not acceptable, a sintered metal insert can be provided.

Some typical applications for the Evasser include cement, carbon black and flour.

The Evasser bin aerator is available with a convenient external mounting plate. This means that installation of the device can be done from outside of the bin making it ideal for use in replacing worn and plugged air pads. In addition, with no moving parts or filters to clean or replace the Evasser requires virtually no maintenance.

Monitor Technologies LLC is a leading supplier of level, flow, particle emission and aeration instrumentation for the worldwide powder and bulk solids market. The experience and market knowledge gained over the past forty years has earned Monitor a reputation for providing high quality, reliable products.

Flow rates up to 3,000 ft3/hr

New Feeders Handle Wet, Chopped Fiberglass

Whitewater, WI -- With the recent acquisition of the SolidsFlow product line, AccuRate has expanded its product offerings to the gypsum / drywall production industry.

Click hereThe SolidsFlow product line includes feeders that are preferred by drywall producers worldwide for feeding chopped fiberglass. SolidsFlow feeders utilize a unique one-piece vibratory feed tray designed to specifically accommodate the material's unique flow characteristics. This design enables the natural matting effect of fibrous materials to seal the material within the feed tray. This prevents flow when the drive is turned off. No spillage. No run-on.

The SolidsFlow feeders also include the following features:

  • No material arching or hang-ups in the hopper
  • Minimizes clumping
  • No flow-aid devices needed
  • No moving parts, so fewer spare parts are needed
  • “Instant cut-off” for optimal batch accuracy
  • Flow rates up to 3,000 cubic feet/hour

The new SolidsFlow product line complements the wide range of additive feeders, flow meters and weighfeeders it currently supplies to drywall producers worldwide. Furthermore, the addition gives AccuRate® new technological tools to expand the range and number of bulk solids metering solutions it can offer its customers.

AccuRate is a Unit of Schenck AccuRate, a global supplier of bulk solids metering equipment and systems including volumetric and gravimetric screw feeders, weigh-feeders, Multicor and DLM dry material flow meters, SacMaster bulk bag discharging systems and BEMP belt scales.

Capacities to 1,000 tons per hour

High-Capacity Screeners Reduce Capital Costs

CINCINNATI, OH (February 22, 2002) - Megatex screeners from Rotex Inc. are the high capacity solution for effectively screening high volumes of materials that would overwhelm a single conventional screener.

Click hereMegatex Screeners provide efficient, accurate separations at production rates greater than other large capacity screening options. Providing 100 to 350 square feet of screen surface in a compact 10' x 10' x 12' machine, they can do the job of multiple conventional screeners, thus reducing capital outlay and saving considerable installation, operation and floor space costs.

The Megatex's unique design evenly splits and distributes the incoming flow of material to multiple, stacked 5' x 7' screen decks - the equivalent of a bank of ten screeners in one machine.

Megatex Screeners achieve greater productivity through two design innovations: wide screens and long-stroke, gyratory motion. Utilizing screen surfaces that are wider, rather than longer, enables Megatex Screeners to handle increased capacity while maintaining screening accuracy.

Expansion of the total screen area is key to increased screener capacity - but all screen area is not equally productive. Increased screen width expands capacity more effectively than increased screen length. Therefore, Megatex uses a two-bank, multi-level screen deck arrangement to present 16' to 50' of width to the feed, which keeps bed depth low and maintains screen accuracy and efficiency at high capacities.

Help Forum

Hot Messages from the Help Forum

People post their requests for help and offer their suggestions to others in our open forum.

Mr. Beveridge needs problems with a mineral slurry:

During our reaction of a mineral base slurry with an inorganic acid the slurry material gets thick and forms small, soft globules like "cottage cheese curds".  The product is an insoluble small micron size crystal.

The mineral base slurry is mixed first then the acid is slowly injected through a small nozzle into the stirred reactor over about an hour.  The pH starts very high (11+) and acid is added until the pH is neutral (7.0).  It seems as the product reacts it forms a shell around the basic slurry making the curds.  The pH will fall to neutral then climb back up after the acid is stopped and the mixing continues.  Acid is then started again and the pH adjusted to neutral.

Does any one have any suggestions for more intimate mixing in our 4,000 gallon reactor, that will keep the curds from forming and the acid-addition time to a minimum?  (Click here to post a reply)

Mr. Gavin wants to pneumatically convey salt:

Has anyone installed a dilute/medium phase pneumatic conveyor handling common salt and experienced unusually high pressure drops? Is the friction factor of salt especially high compared to most powdered materials?

Also, has anybody got a practical solution to excessive wearing of long radius bends in pneumatic transport systems? I have heard of various solutions but don't know if any actually work.

Some examples are "T" bends or hollow back bends. Would be interested if anyone has actually had success in extending the life of bends.
