New Comprehensive Conveyor Safety Program

Naples, FL -- The recently completed new “Unit Handling Conveyor Safety DVD/Video”, is now available for use by conveyor manufacturers, distributors, and end users. Conveyor Equipment Manufacturers Association (CEMA) is world renowned for taking the leadership in developing application and safety standards for all types of conveyor technologies, components and systems.

Their comprehensive safety program has been a decade long effort on the part of its 90 conveyor manufacturing company members to address the market need for safe application, use and maintenance of conveyor systems of all types.

The key elements of the safety materials now available from CEMA include:
-Conveyor Safety Labels that graphically alert “Caution”, “Warning”, and “Danger” through the use of pictograms.
-Safety label placement guidelines.
-Safety posters.
-Safety label brochure
-Safety training videos for unit handling conveyors.
-Safety training videos for screw drag and bucket elevator conveyors.
-Warning and safety reminders for screw drag and bucket elevator conveyors.
-Technical report on noise hazard reduction.
-Design and safe application of conveyor crossovers.

In addition to the various print and video conveyor safety materials available directly through CEMA the organization provides useful information that identifies sources of other safety training tools particularly to the mining industry.

The Conveyor Equipment Manufacturers Association is the world leading organization for development of application and safety standards, for all types of conveyor technologies, components and systems.

Thayer's New Insertion Weigh Belt Module

PEMBROKE, MA -- Thayer Scale's Weigh Belt Feeder Series "SI" Insertion Weigh Belt Module is a unique feeder that has been designed to easily fit into an existing belt or vibratory conveyor line.

The "SI" comes in either "scale over" or "scale under" design. A short support framework and a 24" long "V-Guided" conveyor (12", 18" and 24" wide) makes this the only practical weighing module for insertion into a transition space between existing conveyors or equipment.

The SI Insertion Weigher uses Thayer Scale's patented Model 15L precision flexure plate suspension scale with FMSS technology. The scale provides for complete mass counterbalancing of the dead load of the conveyor permitting the load sensor to react only to the net material load. This unique system is not affected by dirt, shocks or vibration, and can withstand overloads in access of 1,000 pounds without causing damage or affecting calibration. The highly advanced and extremely robust sensing technology is based on the marriage of the LVDT, embedded temperature sensing and properly linerizing and temperature compensation algorithms.

Unique benefits result from suspending a short "V-Guided" conveyor from the Thayer model 15L Force Measurement Suspension System (15L-FMSS). Since load measurements are not affected by the physical characteristics of the belting and its supporting means the construction of the belting and its material can be chosen on the basis of durability and belt-tracking ability without concern for accuracy compromise. Also, on new installations, the combination of the most suitable volumetric pre-feeder and the Series SI often proves the best approach considering cost, available space, and materials handling requirements.

The conveyor portion is normally 24" long and is suspended from the scale on an open cantilevered "C-Frame" pipe support, which greatly simplifies belt removal and replacement for wash down applications. Belt widths of 12", 18" and 24" are available.

Because the belting is more robust than that used for "under-the-belt" load sensing feeders, and because the belt is positively tracked using a V-Guided tracking system, the operating life of the belt is substantially longer than with conventional designs. The conveyor portion can be oriented on the C-Frame to convey horizontally, upwards (20 degrees) or downward (20 degrees), in whatever configuration best suits the installation conditions. The combination of gear reducer/motor is supplied for wash down service, and is available in either constant or variable speed applications.

Thayer Scale enjoys a unique reputation as a supplier of equipment that provides the rare combination of measurement precision and extreme robustness. Equipment installed more than 40 years ago continues to operate reliably and accurately.

Outotec to Deliver Alumina Calciners to Russia

Espoo, Finland -- Outotec has agreed with ZAO Komi Aluminum on the design and delivery of two alumina calciners for the Sosnogorsk Alumina Refinery in the Republic of Komi, Russia. The contract value exceeds EUR 20 million.

Outotec's scope of delivery covers the engineering, supply of special equipment and services for a calcination plant with two circulating fluid bed calciners. Each calciner has a capacity of 2,640 tonnes alumina per day. The total annual capacity of the new refinery will be 1.4 million tons of alumina.

The new calcination plant is expected to be operational by the end of 2008.

In the aluminum production process bauxite is first digested with caustic soda to extract and precipitate pure aluminum hydroxide, which is then calcined to alumina. Alumina is the main raw material in aluminum production.

Since 1968, when the first industrial plant for alumina calcination based on circulating fluid bed technology was designed in Germany by Lurgi, Outotec has delivered over 50 alumina calcining plants all over the world. These two units for Komi will, however, be Outotec's first alumina calciner deliveries to Russia.

Outotec, formerly Outokumpu Technology, is a worldwide technology leader in minerals and metals processing, providing innovative and environmentally sound solutions for a wide variety of customers in minerals processing, iron and steel, aluminum and non-ferrous metals industries.

New User Group for NIR Chemical Imaging

Malvern, UK -- Malvern Instruments has held the inaugural meeting in Europe for users of the company’s near infrared chemical imaging (NIR-CI) systems. The one-day event, which took place on 13 June 2007 was hosted by AstraZeneca in Macclesfield, UK. Malvern customers from some of the world’s major pharmaceutical companies joined Malvern’s technical and scientific teams for a program that included oral and poster presentations on the application of NIR-CI, and the opportunity to exchange experiences and ideas.

During the first sessions, presentations from users included: ‘Chemical imaging and quality by design’; ‘Moving NIR chemical imaging from lab to process-based methodology’; ‘Applications of NIR imaging in drug development’; and ‘Content uniformity determination’. The final parts of the day were devoted to instrumentation and software, together with a session on morphological imaging.

Linda Kidder, Malvern’s product manager for chemical imaging systems, felt that the day was extremely valuable. “This was our first chemical imaging user meeting in Europe and we were very pleased with the response from our customers,” she said. “Attendees came from a number of different European countries and shared their experiences through oral or poster presentations. The pharmaceutical industry is currently the biggest user of Malvern’s chemical imaging systems and it was good to hear more about the various applications for which they are being used.” A similar meeting will be held for chemical imaging users in the United States later in the year.

Malvern’s recently launched SyNIRgi system underlines the continuing migration of NIR-CI technology from its specialist roots into routine use as a highly desirable, quantitative analytical tool. The hallmarks of SyNIRgi are its rugged construction with no moving parts, modular software that enables the development of turnkey solutions, and expandability options for automation accessories.

Since NIR chemical imaging provides robust, reliable and automated data collection that is coupled tightly with quantitative, statistical, objective, reproducible and automated data processing tools, it is highly suited for routine analytical measurements. SyNIRgi is designed with this in mind.

Mr. Kumar wants to convey fly ash:

I would like to know the possibility of conveying fly ash at the rate of 120 tph through a pipe line for a distance of approximately 1400 meters with static head of 30 meters by single-stage conveying.

What are the challenges ahead?  Are there any installations with successful performance?  (to post reply, click here)

Rocky wants help with the Johanson equation:

I am new for this powder industry. I found some articles about Johanson equation here.  In the article "calculating free-fall mass flow at hopper outlet" Mr. Lee and Ali gave me impressive explanation about it.

What confusing me is the capital "M" , I found it in other books about "M" that "1" for long slot outlet, "0" for conical hopper. just opposite to the article mentioned about.  Any answers would be appreciated!
