New Improved Kalcret Hard
Compound from Abresist
Urbana,
IN -- Abresist Corporation introduces the new and improved
Kalcret® hard compound, cement bonded wear protection for
system components and pipes. The new Kalcret features a
reduced mixing time of approximately 5 minutes, is easier to
handle and offers a faster installation time. The new
compound can also be easily applied overhead.
Kalcret is made up of a hard aggregate material, cement
binder and micro and nano silica. The hard aggregate
provides the high quality wear protection, while the micro
and nano silica fill the pores between the cement portions.
Kalcret reaches high strength and wear resistance after 8
hours.
Suitable for temperatures up to 1,200°C/2,192°F, Kalcret
handles a broad range of abrasive products, including coal,
cement, ore, sand and other hard, granular materials.
Kalcret is available as a toweled, cast or sprayed-on
compound to provide a continuous lining for system
components with horizontal, vertical, inclined, curved, flat
and large surfaces. Kalcret is also available in
prefabricated shaped elements and equipped with threaded
studs or weld clips.
Founded in 1977, Abresist Corporation, based in Urbana,
Indiana, manufactures fused cast basalt and ceramic linings
that provide excellent abrasion and impact protection.
Specifically constructed for use wherever wear and abrasion
are a problem, Abresist® linings reduce downtime and
maintenance. They are highly resistant to the abrasive
effects of bulk materials such as silica, ore, glass, slag,
fly ash, limestone, coal, coke, feed, grain, fertilizer,
salt and other highly abrasive materials.

One Man Handles 80,000 Tons
Uzwil,
Switzerland -- The commissioning of the new ship unloader in
the port of Durban was no everyday event even for the
managers of the Bidvest Group. Little wonder, therefore,
that Koos Smith, Director of the Bidfreight affiliate SA
Bulk Terminal (SABT), proudly explained to media
representatives: “With the commissioning of the new ship
unloader, our capacity has increased to 250,000 metric tons
per month or 3 million tons per year – more than the total
capacity of all other grain terminals in South Africa
combined.”
And
indeed – the data of the new SABT ship unloader, which
handles freeflowing bulk materials in the port of Durban,
is impressive. The Buhler Portalink 800 weighs 426 tons and
has a boom length of 27 meters. The stunning railmounted
structure can lift and lower its boom and kick its vertical
marine leg in and out to handle 800 tons of grain per hour.
It is also capable of discharging rice, soybeans, and
sunflower seeds. A single man operates the steel giant from
his cab or by radio control from the ship’s deck. In other
words, one man unloads a 80,000ton vessel virtually on his
own.
Together with the mechanical unloader also installed on the
pier, which has a capacity of 290 tons per hour and was
supplied by Buhler in 1976, the total capacity of the SABT
installation has now increased to 18,000 tons per day. This
means that the berthing time of a Panamaxclass vessel has
been reduced to a mere 10 days – a massive improvement over
the 26 days required up to now that slashes the berthing
costs.
Different specifications
SABT
ordered the new Portalink 800 in August 2005. Installation
work started in May 2006. The facility was commissioned on
September 12 and inaugurated on November 6, 2006. The
specialists from the Buhler Grain Handling business unit had
to give consideration to a number of peculiarities during
the engineering stage.
One
particular challenge concerned the special mode of feeding
the existing conveyors that move the bulk material to the
storage bins. In addition, the substructure of the Portalink
– its gantry – had to be adapted to suit the limited load
bearing capacity of the pier. To achieve a better
distribution of the total weight, the unloader travels on 16
wheels on the waterfront side and on 10 on the land side.
Buhler
is a global leader in the supply of process engineering
solutions, especially production technologies for making
foods and engineering materials. Buhler is present in over
140 countries and employs some 6,600 people.

Portable Gain-in-Weight Filling
Station
Toronto,
Canada -- ARBO Engineering was engaged to design and
manufacture a gain in weight filling station for a
pharmaceutical supply company. The objective was to speed up
the filling of various sized containers with different types
of powders and do so with less the 0.5% over set point.
ARBO
designed a Pharmaceutical grade feeder/filler based on the
AF-14 Stainless Steel Resonant Vibratory Drive, which
included a V shaped tray, 1 cu. ft. hopper (all contact
materials 316SS continuously welded in and out and ground
smooth. The 304SS scale, feeder and hopper are all mounted
on a robust 304SS, Electropolished frame rolling on heavy
duty casters.
The
system is controlled by a HARDY Instruments model 3010
filler dispenser controller which is ergonomically placed in
front of the filler to allow for easy selection of the
particular feed rate.. The operator uses a foot pedal to
actuate the filling cycle which is automatically terminated
when the desired weight is dispensed.
Once
the filling cycle is complete, the hopper can be removed by
removing two quick connect clamps for cleaning and reuse.
The entire filling station can be moved from one part of the
plant to another which reduced the occurrences of spillage
from moving the materials within the plant.
The
1000:1 turndown ratio of the AF-14 drive allows for the
quick dispensing of small and large quantities of material
into various sized bottles and vessels all with one machine.
Simple, robust, easy to use, versatile and accurate, this
machine has applications in foods, packaging, pharmaceutical
and industries as well as specialty metals and a wide
variety of other application.

ISL : New Activation Frame for Bulk Bags
United
Kingdom -- Ivan Semenenko Ltd. (ISL) has further
enhanced the design of the unique “Bulk Bag Bin” (BBB)
to accommodate the range of FIBC’s from 1250mm, whether
square, rectangular or circular section down to 600mm
square, all on one standard, multi purpose activation
frame. The BBB also enables the fitting of long and
short socked outlets from 200 to 600mm diameter, as well
as flat bottomed FIBC’s, with or without liner.
At the heart of the latest
Bulk Bag Bin enhancement is the patented Activation
Frame, which utilizes, in the initial discharge
sequence, the product weight to push a support plate
progressively lower and simultaneously move a series of
Urging Plates into the sides of the Bulk Bag. This
simultaneous operation continues with the Bulk Bag
following the support plate down allowing it to form
into a hopper and at the same time the Urging Plates
lift any static product into the flow path.
With many cohesive products a
hollow core or stable rathole can be the result when
static hopper discharge systems are used but with the
ISL Bulk Bag Bin even as a ‘core’ forms the dynamics of
the Activation Frame will overcome the problem.
With ISL developed software,
which detects zero flow, the cone valve is brought into
operation and raises the support frame to the desired
height and frequency. In sequence the bag is lifted and
the Urging Frames automatically move into and away from
the Bulk Bag as determined by the control software. The
use of a pair of support frames to hold two loops of the
FIBC assists in retaining the bag and ensures there is a
requisite degree of tension whilst the manipulation
process is underway.
ISL, (Ivan Semenenko Ltd),
manufacturer of powder handling systems is synonymous
with Cone Valve Technology and the utilization of the
cone valve principle for use in IBC’s, Silos, Hoppers as
well as upgrading and simplifying traditional, complex
cone valve equipment for existing users.

Shaft Seals Contain Hazardous Mixer Dust
Several
producers of carbon anodes for use in the aluminum
smelting process have begun using MECO shaft seals on
their mixers to reduce carbon dust escape. The induction
furnaces in aluminum smelters consume large numbers of
carbon electrical anodes. It is common for the smelter
to have an anode manufacturing facility on site to meet
this need. These “green mills” produce a finely-ground
carbon/pitch mixture....(more)
