Improving Pigment Grinding
------------------------------------------------------------

The German paint factory Lackfabrik Osnatol relies on long-term
partnerships when it comes to expanding its paste production
facilities.

That is why it is counting on the services of the global
Buhler Technology Group, which now also offers solutions in
the field of paint manufacture. One of the machines that has
been in service in this plant since recently is a new bead
mill, which helps improve the quality of the company’s products.

Osnatol produces solvent-based paints for a large number of
industries. The pigment pastes are highly concentrated, which
means that their pigment content is very high. Osnatol’s
partnership with Buhler has enabled it to produce even more
highly pigmented pastes within a short time allowing it to
further expand its range of products. In addition, flexibility
has been increased, supply times have been reduced, and costs
have been cut.

NEW BEAD MILL

Not least among the reasons for these improvements is the new
Buhler K60 conical bead mill, which achieves a throughput of
up to 150 kilograms per hour in processing pigment pastes.
One improvement gained by applying this model, for example,
is that one or two grinding passes can be eliminated. It
took company owner Hans-Jürgen Bartels only a short time to
notice that the color strength had increased by about 30
percent: In the case of specialty products, the color strength
was even doubled. Bartels is also satisfied with the increased
product fineness, which has been appreciably improved by the
new machine.

ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY PRODUCTS

Thanks to the lower cross-contamination of different products,
it has proved possible to reduce the cleaning times, and
solvent consumption has dropped by as much as 50 percent:
This allows us to help protect the environment, says Bartels,
who already has other plans: In order to satisfy the current
environment-related requirements, we are testing the
application of the Buhler machine for water-based paints.
In the future, we want to produce more water-based paints
and effect finishes, for which we have just recently built
a new production hall.

EXTENSIVE TRAINING

The correct operation and application of the machines and a
solid general know-how are crucial for ensuring the success
of an expansion strategy such as the one systematically
pursued by Osnatol. Thanks to the extensive training of
Osnatol’s operators at Buhler’s engineering laboratory in
Uzwil, Switzerland, operation of the machine has been
optimized, which pays off in the form of outstanding
production results.

TWO MODERN FACTORIES

The company Osnatol-Werk GmbH & Co. KG operates two modern
production facilities in Germany for making high-quality paints.
The company headquarters are in Belm-Vehrte near Osnabrück;
a branch factory is located in Steglitz near Magdeburg.
Thank to its own state-of-the-art research and development
department, which cooperates closely with Buhler, Osnatol
is prepared to meet the challenges of the future.

Buhler, with a payroll of almost 7000 and annual sales of
1.6 billion German marks, is a global technology partner
for dispersion technology, but has world-class capabilities
also in areas of process engineering, in chemical engineering,
in food processing, and in die casting.

Mixer Emulsifiers Built for Vacuum or Pressure Operation
------------------------------------------------------------

Ross Series 500 Mixer Emulsifiers are built for service in
critical manufacturing environments that require vacuum
and/or internal pressure operation. The mixers are built
with either single or double mechanical seals carefully
selected to match the clients specific process requirements.
Double seals are supplied for either conventional lubricated
operation or for dry running operation for particularly
sensitive applications such as in the pharmaceutical industry.

The Series 500 model is available in sizes from 1.5 through
100 hp. All wetted surfaces, except the shaft support bushing
are of type 316 stainless steel construction. The bushing
is normally supplied in bronze or Teflon however several
additional materials are available to meet each process
requirement. For high solids applications special bushing
lubrication systems supply a continuous lubrication to
the bushing location. All stator heads are available for
use with this model.
