Infovrac : New Ceramic Pulley Lagging to be Launched

Tampere, Finland -- Metso Minerals Wear Protection and Conveying (WPC) will introduce its new ceramic pulley lagging at the Infovrac exhibition 21-23 June, Parc des Congres, Paris on Stand P25.

The new lagging with ceramic inserts has been designed for use in difficult wet and muddy working conditions, common in gold, copper, iron ore, coal and steelworks, to eliminate belt slippage. The ceramic inserts made of high strength aluminum oxide, ensure extremely high wear resistance.

At the Infovrac Forum, Eric Maricot, Customer Service Manager, Metso Minerals will present a paper on Wednesday 22 June on the alternative to traditional long conveyors including Trellamid belt, pipe conveyors and cable belt techniques and developments.

Metso Minerals France will also announce its plans for a new partner network across the country for the wear protection and conveying solutions.

Metso wants to reinforce the relationships with its customers by offering a stronger and local service. The regional partners will promote and implement the Trellex-Skega solutions for the wear protection and conveying.

Metso Minerals offers equipment, service and process solutions to industries including quarrying and aggregates production, mining and minerals processing, construction and civil engineering, and recycling and waste management. The product offering comprises rock and minerals processing plants, crushers and related equipment, mobile crushing and screening units, grinding mills, enrichment plants, recycling systems for minerals and metals, wear protection products and conveyor belts, as well as wear and spare parts and after-market services.

New : RFID-Ready Pallet Labeler

Cincinnati, OH -- Kolinahr Systems’ SA2200-RF Dual Panel RFID Pallet Labeler is designed to read, write, print, and apply RFID-enabled labels to the front and/or side of a pallet load. The SA2200-RF Labeling System utilizes a Zebra™ RFID-enabled printer to read, write, and verify EPC-compliant RFID tags embedded in the labels.

A 3” x 3” thick rotating arm applies the label to the leading edge of the pallet load. The arm then returns for a duplicate label that is applied to the side of the load. For dual-sided applications, EPC tags can be embedded under every other label. If the embedded RFID tag cannot be read/written/verified, a fault status will be displayed. A label removal system on the SA2200-RF will dispose of the invalid EPC tag after it is dispensed onto the tamp pad, prior to application. This process ensures that a valid RFID tag will always be placed on the pallet load.

The SA2200-RF is controlled by a PLC, which can communicate with the conveyor, stretch wrapper, and palletizer to ensure proper product handling during the labeling sequence. The rugged PHD® rotary actuator, along with the heavy-duty stand, the NEMA 12 controls enclosure, and other high quality commercial parts help ensure that the SA2200-RF will handle the rigors of 24/7 pallet load labeling.

Kolinahr Systems is a Cincinnati, OH-based manufacturer of pallet labelers, pallet load stackers, and specialty pallet handling equipment.

Automation : Multiple Tablet Press Loading System

Belleville, NJ -- Featuring patented Vac-U-Max tube hopper material receivers and microprocessor control, this system is a relatively simple example of how previously manual operations can be cleaned up and automated. The system automatically conveys tablet granulations from drums to surge bins over six tablet presses in individual rooms.

A tube hopper material receiver, with vertical sides to minimize material hang-up, is located over each surge bin. The microprocessor, in panel shown below, constantly scans level controls on the surge bins and initiates conveying of tablet formulation to the receiver over any press requiring material.

Laborious hand scooping is eliminated, housekeeping is vastly improved and the system insures that no press will run dry, which could cause costly tooling damage.

Programmable control panel, in foreground right, and vacuum pump, at right, are located in an adjacent room. The control panel, with its microprocessor, is the nerve center for the system and has reserve capacity to handle a total of sixteen presses. Vacuum is applied to the material receivers over all six presses by one vacuum pump.

Pulsar : New "Blocked Chute" Detection

Worcester, England -- Within the bulk materials industries, belt conveyors are used extensively to feed materials via chutes to stockpiles, screen houses or crushers, and to transport stone around sites that often extend to several square kilometers. Materials may well travel along several conveyors to reach a destination, and on such large sites, conveyors naturally operate unattended.

Chutes and transfer points through which the stone is discharged from one conveyor to another are potential weak points, and when such large quantities of heavy material are concerned a blocked chute can very quickly cause significant damage to conveyors, creating hours of downtime, thousands of pounds worth of expense and lost production.

To avoid this a variety of techniques are employed to both warn of blockages and to automatically shut down conveyors and feeders before damage can be done. The most commonly employed technique is a flap switch, signaling from a proximity unit when the angle of the flap changes beyond certain levels. Because the flap is a mechanical, contacting, system, regular maintenance is required and the flap switches require periodic replacement.

An alternative system makes use of microwaves fired across the chute. These are expensive, and careful positioning is required to ensure that the microwave path does not cross the normal flow of stone, or spurious alarms may be generated.

The Pulsar solution is to use non-contacting ultrasonic technology to measure "top-down" into the discharge of the conveyor. A robust dB3 transducer fires an ultrasound pulse into the chute and receives the echo from the stone while the associated black box 130 transceiver, which may be up to 1000m from the transducer, analyses the signal received, calculating the materials distance from the transducer. The system is maintenance-free and extremely reliable.

The black box 130 features two relays that can be configured to close or open at a user-programmed level, alerting staff or immediately switching the offending conveyor off before damage can be done. Pulsar's black box family is designed as a component system, reducing cost by removing unnecessary elements of the system such as the unit display.

Mr. Laplante needs help with silos and hoppers:

I would like to know if anybody ever stored cocoa shell or cocoa mulch, density of 12lbs/cu.ft, in a hopper tank. Is a 60 degree slope is OK and does the material unload or flow easily from the hopper or will it bridge?
