materials, differences in dry, moist and liquid process
applications and a complete overview of magnetic
separation equipment.
It details the power of
rare earth magnets, proper equipment selection by process,
time saving options and helpful hints. The
"hints" provide hyperlinks to online
calculators, diagrams and many free tools to simplify
equipment selection. The Ask Orange Series of How-to
manuals provide solutions to process problems.
In addition to this series
of quick reading reference guides, the "Ask Orange"
collection will include more than 230 process solutions
located on the company's web site. This material will be

Flowmeter : Reduce Over and Under Weighing of Railcars
Whitewater,
WI -- For metering plastic pellets, grains, and other free
flowing materials into rail cars, AccuRate's Multicor
Solids Flowmeter offers precise measuring accuracies as
well as time and cost savings. An example of the benefits
provided by the Multicor is further described through the
metering of plastic pellets.
After going through the
extrusion and screening process, the finished pellets are
transferred through a tube inlet into the Multicor. The
Multicor totalizes the weight of the pellets and moves the
materials through a vented air lock into a pneumatic
conveyor line, which delivers the pellets into a silo. By
totalizing all the plastic pellets through the Multicor,
the system automatically dispenses the appropriate amount
from the silo needed to fill one rail car. After the rail
car is filled with materials from the silo it is taken to
a rail scale to be weighed.
The key benefit of using
the Multicor in this process is clearly illustrated during
the weighing of the rail car at the rail scale. For
processors that do not use a Multicor to totalize the
amount of material going into the silo, they run the risk
of having their rail cars either under weight or over
weight after being weighed at the rail scale. This forces
them to return to the loading station to either remove
material or add material to the rail car. By having a
Multicor in place prior to loading materials into the silo
the chances for under or over weighment are significantly
reduced. This, in effect, saves processors the time and
cost of continually going back and forth between the
loading silos and the rail scales.
Other features of the
Multicor include:
- Measures at high
capacity, free flowing materials
- Flow rates up to 10,000
cubic feet per hour
- ± .5% accuracy
available when metering over 2 tons per hour
- Can handle material
temperatures up to 266° F

WBF Users
Group to Hold First "Face to Face" Meeting
CHANDLER,
AZ -- The World Batch Forum (WBF) User Group will kick off
a campaign to expand its membership and activities, when
it holds its first "face-to-face" meeting at
WBF's annual North American conference in April.
"For the
past several years, we've conducted small User Group
meetings via teleconference, but we've never held a live
session," said Maurice Wilkins, vice chairman of WBF
and Users Group coordinator.
"However,
for the Users Group to make a genuine contribution to the
advancement of batch process automation and to give the
vendor community some requirements feedback, we want to
attract as many potential members as possible and increase
our level of activity. That requires face-to-face
meetings, and since many of the people we want to attract
to the group will be attending WBF's annual conference in
New Jersey, it's the perfect time and place for us to get
together," he added.
The User Group
meeting will take place Sunday, April 13 at the Woodcliff
Lake Hilton in Woodcliff Lake, NJ and is open to all WBF
individual and corporate members, who work for
"owner/operator" companies User Group meeting
attendees do not have to be registered for the conference.
"Among
the topics of discussion will be the changing user
requirements of batch system users and the role of World
Batch Forum and the Users Group in defining and helping
the vendor community to meet them", Wilkins said.
"Much of
the discussion will be centered on a recent study by ARC
Advisory Group on the subject. ARC Senior Analyst John
Blanchard is a speaker at the WBF conference, and we
certainly welcome his participation in our efforts,"
Wilkins said.
Anyone seeking
more information about the WBF User Group and the April
meeting can contact Wilkins at maurice.wilkins@millenniumchem.com.
About World
Batch Forum: Established in 1994, is a non-profit,
professional organization promoting the exchange of

Mr. Biro is
looking for a diverter valve:
I am looking for a divert
or multiport valve. The system is a dilute phase conveying
line. We are looking for an option that allows for
diverting from one to any of four ducts (4"
probably). We want the switch from one port to
another to be able to be done without stopping the system.

Tom needs help
scaling up precipitate filtration:
I have a basic lab
precipitation and Buchner funnel filtration process for a
calcium-phosphate that we manufacture which has been
scaled up to the level where we can precipitate and filter
up to 2 kg worth of powder (in roughly 80 L of water) per
day, in four batches. We use Whatman type 541 filter
paper in the funnels, on a vacuum line.
We now need to scale this up, and as we have limited space
we are running out of places to put Buchner funnels - and
they are not convenient within the context of a production
process. A custom reactor for up to 50 kg/batch I
can easily design, but I need to filter it. At this
level a continuous process seems most appropriate and
would minimize operator involvement. I have looked
at small centrifuges, but I am not sure if that would be
appropriate. The restriction for me is that there
should be no metal-to-product contact as this leads to
contamination.
Does anyone have any suggestions for any processes which I
could look at? I am based in London, UK. I
remember seeing a screw-press that might have done but I
can no longer find the link to the page I saw it on.
