Vancouver Wharves Chooses Cleveland Cascade Chute
------------------------------------------------------------
Due to competitive pressures, Vancouver Wharves decided on a
strategy for bulk loading that included twenty-two (22)
different types of agricultural commodities. The plan was
developed to build a world class bulk loading facility that
would offer customers and agricultural suppliers the advantage
of fast loading with little or no degradation to the
agricultural products within Canadian Environmental Guidelines.
CMC Engineering of Vancouver, Canada was the lead engineering
firm for developing the bulk handling facility. The project
included covered storage, covered conveyors, dust collection,
ship loader, and soft loading chute. A task force of
approximately twenty-two people made decisions regarding all
project parameters and equipment selection.
The key to convincing customers and suppliers to utilize the
terminal was the concept of less degradation due to better
design. The commodities being handled range from wheat to
peas to alfalfa cubes.
Most of the decisions regarding equipment selection were a
tradeoff between cost and conceptualizing innovative solutions.
The task force easily made these decisions with the guidance
of CMC Engineering.
However, the decision on selecting a soft loading chute that
could be cleaned between commodities to prevent cross
contamination was difficult for the task force. All loading
chute options were considered and site visits were made to
several manufacturers' installations.
The project parameters were to load 40 pcf agricultural products
at 1,900 tons per hour within Canadian Environmental Dust
Guidelines with less than 1% fines generation by the loading
chute.
After visiting PEBCO® installations in San Diego, California
and Portland, Oregon it was decided that the Cleveland Cascade®
Chute exhibited the degradation qualities most prized by the
task force. The only remaining questions were the capacity
of the chute, time for manufacture of the chute, and the
challenge of quickly cleaning the chute between products.
There were numerous meetings between PEBCO® and the task force
in Vancouver to solve these issues. PEBCO® committed to
developing a Mark IV chute specifically to load the agricultural
commodities at the requested rate and deliver the finished
product to Vancouver by November 1999.
CMC Engineering was assigned the task of developing a cleaning
system with minimal assistance from PEBCO®. PEBCO® confirmed
the innovative air cleaning system designed by CMC would
work as the chute was dropped down over the 60 foot cleaning
pipe.
Rob Booker, Manager of Operations for the terminal, confirms
that the cleaning system is very effective and provides a
quick solution for cleanout between various agricultural
commodities.
As a testament to the soft loading nature of the Cleveland
Cascade® chute, Rob reports that his customers are especially
concerned with split peas and degraded alfalfa cubes. He
also reports that the Cleveland Cascade® Chute has completely
solved degradation issues with the loading of agricultural
products. This puts Vancouver Wharves at the forefront of
handling friable agricultural product from the Canadian
heartland.
The solution to Vancouver Wharves' long term strategy was
solved with innovative engineering and an open minded task
force.
PEBCO® Incorporated of Paducah, Kentucky has entered into an
agreement with Cleveland Potash of England to manufacture
and sell the CLEVELAND CASCADE® Chute in North and South
America. As part of this agreement, PEBCO® has purchased
all the patent rights to the CLEVELAND CASCADE® Chute in
these territories.

USDA, 3A-Dairy Accepted Helix (Screw) Conveyor From Hapman
------------------------------------------------------------
Hapman manufactures USDA, 3A-Accepted Helix conveyors that
meet the stringent sanitary requirements of the food, dairy
and pharmaceutical industries. These units have easy access
for cleaning/disassembly, and all product contact surfaces are
radiused and polished to USDA, 3-Astandards.
In addition, there are no exposed threads in the contact areas.
Tri-clamp connectors and modular construction allows the
conveyor to be completely disassembled, using no special tools,
in less than five minutes. And, these same connectors allow
easy interfacing with sanitary Bulk BagUnloading stations
and other processing equipment. Optional items include;
various sizes of conical feed hoppers (in 304 or 316L stainless
steel), low-level sensors, round or flat wire augers and
portable sanitary bases with stainless steel round tube
construction.
The unit shown was designed for use in a cheese and milk
powder applications and features an AC inverted duty motor
for ramp acceleration/deceleration with speeds ranging from
90-400 RPM - allowing precise control of weigh and blending
processes. Because of the flexible casing and auger, conveying
around, under or over equipment obstructions is simple
allowing product to be conveyed up to 30 feet vertically
and/or horizontally. Helix conveyors are typically used to
convey flowable materials such as powder, crystals, flakes and
granules and are most often used in "batch-type" applications.
Hapman is a leading manufacturer of bulk material handling
systems and provides appropriate conveyor solutions for its
customers from its "3 choices" of conveyors - Tubular Drag,
Flexible Screw and Pneumatic. In addition, Hapman manufacturers
manual bag dump stations with dust collection; bulk bag
unloaders, bag filling and batch weigh equipment with a wide
range of system options.

New Wet Magnetic Trap for "Chunky Flows"
------------------------------------------------------------
Ideal for removing tramp metal from salsa, soup, stew, meat
and canned fruit lines where flow is difficult through
typical "finger type" traps.
ERIE, PA - January 31, 2001 - Eriez Magnetics' RE Plus Rare
Earth U-shaped liquid line magnetic trap delivers 40% more
power while gently streaming product through the line. The
new U4 trap uses Eriez' standard Erium® 3000 Rare Earth
magnetic circuits or is available in an optional RE Plus
Super Strength Rare Earth circuit. The RE Plus option provides
the absolute highest strength permanent magnet available
for liquid line applications.
The U-shaped trap's smooth bowl design gradually spreads the
chunky product flow to the face of the Super Strength Rare
Earth Plate Magnet where the tramp metal is removed. This
design eliminates much of the product degradation present
when using "finger type" traps. Standard in three and four
inch models, the U4 trap can be fitted with ACME threaded,
ferrule, flanged or butt weld ends to accommodate most lines.
"We see the U-shaped configuration as a superior trap for
chunky liquid flows," said Dave Heubel, Product Manager of
Eriez Magnetics, USA. "The optional RE Plus Super Strength
Rare Earth Magnet circuit developed for this trap provides
the strongest permanent magnet available for liquid
applications...40% more power than the standard Rare Earth
circuit."
Eriez is the recognized world leader in providing magnetic,
vibratory and metal detection solutions for industry. The
company's magnetic lift and separation, metal detection and
rejection and materials feeding, screening, conveying and
controlling equipment have application in the process,
metalworking, packaging, recycling, mining, aggregate and
textile industries. Eriez manufactures and markets these
products through eight international facilities located on
five continents.

Mr. Dahi needs bulk powder transfer equipment:
This is a safety need. I need an equipment suitable for
transferring bulk material into a process tank with the capability
of turning.
Currently, the operators scoop down the powder into the tank
which is very time consuming and lifting is not a safe option.
Is there a hydraulic unit that can be tilted? I also need
something not too big.
