Aviation Legend to Speak at 2006
Powders Show
NORWALK,

Bethune is the architect of one of the most famous corporate
turnarounds in US history. His effort to rescue the
financially troubled carrier from a seemingly irreversible
tailspin, as chronicled in his best-selling business novel
From Worst to First, has made him a legend in commercial
aviation and earned him numerous distinctions including
recognition by Worth magazine as one of the 50 best CEOs in
America. The keynote presentation is open to all badge
holders, and the first 200 people in attendance will receive
a free copy of his novel. Bethune will be available to sign
books following the keynote, in the Exhibit Hall.

industries which handle, process, and package bulk solids
and dry particulate matter. Over 450 exhibitors will display
the latest innovations, products and technologies, and a
comprehensive four-day educational program will present an
array of tutorials, workshops and seminars delivered by an
international faculty of experts. The Conference opens on
Monday, May 8 and the Exhibition opens Tuesday, May 9.
The
International Powder & Bulk Solids Conference/Exhibition is
sponsored by the Process Equipment Manufacturers'
Association (PEMA) and Powder/Bulk Solids magazine. It is

the Australian Society for Bulk Solids Handling.
The
event is produced and managed by Reed Exhibitions which
manages more than 450 trade shows annually worldwide, and is
a member of the Reed Elsevier Group plc, a world-leading
provider of information-driven services and solutions. Reed
Exhibitions offers integrated market access programs
covering exhibitions, trade publications, direct marketing

Thermo Introduces NIR Analyzers
for Processing
MADISON,
WI -- Thermo Electron Corporation announces the extension of
its award-winning Antaris(TM) near-infrared (NIR) analyzers.
The new Antaris II offers a common platform of method,
procedure, and data transferability of analytical quality
control methods along product development and scale-up
processes.
Thermo's Antaris MX and EX FT-NIR process analyzers are
specifically designed for extending the Antaris offering
into process control applications. These new Antaris
solutions address the analytical needs of process engineers
and plant managers working in the pharmaceutical,
biotechnology, food, chemical, and pulp and paper
industries.
Thermo's new Antaris analyzers benefit from a common
platform design and are specifically suited for method
development, raw materials analysis, batch reaction
monitoring, on- and off-line moisture analysis, real-time
blend uniformity analysis, and tablet analysis.
Additionally, they are ready for implementation as Process
Analytical Technology (PAT) in the pharmaceutical industry.
These
new solutions are all available with a choice of software
packages including the latest version of RESULT(TM) software
featuring revolutionary corrections for transferring data
across sampling techniques and fiber optics; the OMNIC(TM)
software that complements the automation power of the RESULT
software with cutting edge spectroscopic analysis tools for
method developers and; The Unscrambler® software from CAMO
for advanced chemometric modeling and method development.
The
newly designed Antaris II is a reliable analyzer that solves
a broad range of industrial manufacturing quality problems
by providing timely measurements in the laboratory, at
production point-of-use, or in real-time processes. This
novel instrument is capable of performing true simultaneous
reflection and transmission analysis of tablets via a
patent-pending detection system. LIMS, barcode and RFID
compatibility allow integration with inventory management
systems and minimize the risk of operator data error or
paper handling inefficiencies. High-speed USB communications
and an integrated panel PC computing option are also amongst
the system's unique features.
The
Antaris MX and EX are the first high performance FT-NIR
analyzers to be offered in complete, integrated process
packages ready for application. The MX is optimized for raw
material and mobile trigger probe operation requiring only
minimal training and minimizing possibility for error.
Designed for unmanned process control, the EX is optimized
for online analytics-based control of processes such as
drying, batch reaction control and fermentation.
The
Antaris EX is the only FT-NIR process analyzer to come
complete with specialty fiber optic probes, integrated
analog and digital I/O, hazardous environment readiness and
certification, and method transfer from lab development.
True patent-pending simultaneous multi-point measurements
without mechanical multiplexing, internal referencing, and
internal qualification testing completely eliminate some of
the key challenges previously associated with online near
infrared spectroscopy.

WBF to become part of ISA
Affiliate Organization
Research
Triangle Park, NC -- WBF (formerly known as the World Batch
Forum) and ISA are pleased to announce their intention to
affiliate in furtherance of their missions to aid
professionals and industry in the successful development and
application of automation technologies.
The
affiliation will allow both organizations to build on their
respective strengths. The two organizations are working
through the final stages of the arrangements that would
result in WBF functioning as independent affiliate of ISA.
Remaining steps should be completed in the first half of
2006.
WBF's
mission, past activities, and future activities align well
with those of ISA.
*
WBF's work with implementation and adoption of batch and
enterprise integration standards are an excellent complement
to the standards development work done by ISA-SP88 and
ISA-SP95.
* WBF's focus on satisfying the technical needs of end-users
enhances ISA's mission to serve the information needs of
automation professionals.
* WBF's collaborations with other industry organizations
complement similar ISA relationships.
"There
will be no change in the basic structure or direction of
WBF," says Maurice Wilkins, WBF's Chairman, Millennium
Specialty Chemical, a Lyondell Company. "WBF remains an
independent non-profit organization dedicated to providing
an open and non-commercial forum for the exchange of
information related to the management, operation, and
automation of manufacturing processes. In the near future
this affiliation with ISA will allow WBF to provide
additional services to WBF members and the entire industrial
community."
"ISA
is extremely pleased with the opportunity to affiliate with
WBF," said Ken Baker, ISA President. "WBF is highly
respected in the automation community for their excellent
work and the ISA leadership looks forward to working with
the WBF leaders in advancing the automation profession
around the world."

Mr. Odle wants help with bagging
50lb bags:
We manufacture
powder/granular materials at a number of different bulk
densities. We've had issues with our 50lb. bag packaging
equipment "jamming", requiring the process to be stopped,
the bag "patted down", then started back up again. The
material is backing up and trying to push the bag away from
the nozzle. This is auger-style packing equipment.
Looking at the specifications
of the equipment, it looks like it was designed for
materials with bulk densities of 25 and above. A lot of our
materials are well above 25, however, the most problematic
materials we use are typically at a bulk density of 15 or
below. Looking through the company's literature, it looks
like there would be a need to switch technologies (to an air
packer or an impeller packer) in order to get to the lower
bulk densities.
My question is this: Does
anyone know of a retrofit or workaround that can get an
auger-style packer to work properly with bulk densities
below its specification - or am I doomed to purchase a new
piece of equipment for the lower bulk densities?
I was thinking maybe a small
air line that could be ran along with the nozzle into the
bag to supply a short blast of air near the end of the cycle
to settle the contents.

Mr. Walker wants to keep the lid
on his screw conveyor:
I am in the lead battery
manufacturing industry and we have problems with our
lead-oxide auger lids bursting open, then spilling lead
dust.
We have pancake sensors
inside the lids but they are not reliable. After a failure,
the lids become warped and won't seal properly. The augers
transport about 100 pounds of lead in a minute.
We're looking for someone
with solutions, and we are located in Central Kentucky.

Friable Materials : Selecting a Pneumatic Conveying
System
The vast majority of
conveying systems are of the dilute phase type since
they are less expensive and more adaptable. Dilute phase
conveying also provides less particle to particle
interaction, which reduces particle size and shape
degradation. Whenever degradation is a concern, its
three primary causes must be addressed: velocity of
material, angle of impact, and hardness of the material
impacted...(more)
