Powder & Bulk Solids Show Marks 25th Anniversary
------------------------------------------------------------
A host of special events and state-of-the art dry processing.
Norwalk, CT. -Powder and Bulk Solids Conference/ Exhibition
-scheduled to run May 9-11, 2000, at the Rosemont Convention
Center, Rosemont (Chicago), IL, will mark the 25th anniversary
of the largest and most comprehensive event in the world for
the latest innovations in dry processing and powder technology.
Strategically located in the heart of the process manufacturing
industry, the event attracts an international audience, from 42
countries, who are engaged in the processing, handling, testing,
packaging, transportation and storage of dry particulate matter
/bulk solids.
"Established in the bicentennial year, 1976, the benchmark
event is widely regarded as the definitive training ground for
dry processing professionals, keeping companies in touch with
the latest trends from more than 600 key industry exhibitors,"
said Kevin Richards, industry vice president and show manager,
Reed Exhibition Companies, (REC).
Problem-Solving Educational Courses:
Each conference session is designed to provide practical solutions
and applications of developments in powder technology. Conferees
will be able to evaluate a variety of processing solutions for
their own unique processing challenges, and avoid costly mistakes
in the complex process of planning, designing and implementing
a dry processing system.
Free Networking Luncheon:
Free to all full and one-day conferees, the popular and informal
luncheons are designed to bring participants together to exchange
ideas, share information or get answers to questions. Each table
at the luncheon will feature a discussion topic of general interest.
Industry experts will serve as moderators at each table, supplying
information and keeping the discussion moving. The luncheons held
daily from May 8- May 10, at 12 noon, may be purchased pre-show by
non-conferees. Box lunch is provided.
Celebrate Powder & Bulk Solids 25th Anniversary:
Powder & Bulk Solids will be hosting a number of activities and
receptions in which exhibitors and attendees can take part.
"In celebration of our 25th anniversary, we’ve put together some
great giveaways, a special recognition ceremony, and an exciting
networking party as a way of saying ‘thank you’ for all of the
years of support from our exhibitors and attendees," said Richards.
Celebrations commemorating 25 years of Powder & Bulk Solids include
a 70’s-themed party and drawings for prizes- such as a weekend trip
giveaway, sports memorabilia and Walter Payton’s signed football helmet.
The festivity, to be held on Wednesday, May 10, from 4:00-6:00 p.m.,
on the show floor, is free to all Powder attendees, exhibitors,
and speakers.

New Standards Set in Water Polishing of Rice
------------------------------------------------------------
The launching of new HighPoly III polishing machine from Buhler
marks the introduction of the world's most advanced water
polishing technology in the marketplace.
Tried-and-tested components from the precursor model, type BSPC,
have been combined with new elements.
The continuous and intensive research efforts made by Buhler in
the field of rice whitening and polishing are designed to produce
ever-better results in the surface quality of the rice kernels
and in the yield of whole rice kernels. By developing the HighPoly
III polisher, Buhler has reached a new, internationally
acknowledged milestone in rice processing technology. The worldwide
launch of the new polisher was awaited with great interest. On
the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of the American Rice
Millers Association congress in New Orleans, USA, in June 1999,
it was one of the main attractions for the international community.
The separation of the water coating and the polishing process
stages, which had already led to outstanding results with the
predecessor model BSPC, has been retained. But now the separate
operations are integrated by a single shaft. On the one hand,
this guarantees a short time during which the water is allowed
to penetrate only to a minimum depth into the surface of the
individual rice kernels, and on the other hand the material is
fed on the same shaft directly to the polishing stage. This
eliminates the need for any additional conveying and the risk
of product breakage.
The result is a dust-free product which flows like glass beads
through one's hands and which is therefore highly suitable for
attractive presentation in clear, transparent packages. The
breakage rate has been further reduced thanks to the optimal
geometry of the processing chamber and of the polishing gear.
Aerodynamically shaped aspiration ducts minimize dust accumulations.
Large doors that can be swung wide open facilitate access for
maintenance, cleaning and inspections.

Comet Sensi-Dry Weigh Dryer with Man-Machine Interface
------------------------------------------------------------
The First Weigh Dryer with New Man-Machine Interface
The Sensi-Dry weigh dryer from Comet senses the weight of the
drying hopper and its contents. This capability greatly reduces
scrap rates and improves quality by providing operators with
the greatest control in determining material usage and residence
time.
The drying hopper is mounted onto load cells and an Allen-
Bradley controller periodically polls the load cells for weight
information, determining the rate at which material is being
removed from the drying hopper based on the readings.
This capacity to control the feed rate into the drying hopper,
virtually eliminates material degradation by ensuring material
does not remain in the hopper for an extended period of time.
The controller also monitors and records process data, measures
material removal rate, displays records, and stores data elements
including material usage, temperature profile, as well as resin
usage/hour for all individual processing machines.
Man-Machine Interface
Windows® 95/98-based interface allows operators to set and adjust
parameters of both the dryer and conveying system, including
load time and enable/disable dryer fill, without leaving their
desk.
The interface provides virtually unlimited storage of process
data on a standard PC and enables users to customize reports,
print charts and graphs of material usage, dryer temperature,
dewpoint, etc.

Automated Unattended Positioner, The DCL "Smart Loader"
------------------------------------------------------------
DCL is proud to announce its fully automatic, unattended bulk
loading station for high speed filling of dry, dusty materials
into enclosed vehicles.
Utilizing a patented vision system that scans the top of the
vehicle, any open hatch or series of open hatches are
automatically located, measured and qualified. The multi
speed positioner provides a fast scanning speed to minimize
loading cycle times.
The system seats the retractable loading spout securely in
each hatch allowing filling to take place. The hatch seeking
system can find any open hatch within the equipment’s
positioning capabilities.
A unique articulating loading arm is used to move the loading
spout within a designed loading area. A single spout can now
cover a loading area of up to 60 feet in length and 6 feet in
width accommodating center and side hatch rail cars. A typical
truck loading system would cover a loading area of 36 feet
in length and 2 feet in width accommodating both single trailer
and dual trailer rigs which can be off the centerline of the
loading station 1 foot in either direction.
The SmartLoader utilizes servo motors to position the spout
according to the commands dictated from the vision system. As
the open hatch is detected, the spout is positioned and seated
placing the system in its ready to load mode.
As the loading spout seats into the hatch, two limit switches
verify that the spout is in place and give the permission to
begin loading. Upon completion of filling the compartment as
dictated by the scale, the system seeks the next open hatch
and repeats the filling cycle according to the scale’s set point.
The process of loading a vehicle is simple. The driver pulls
his truck onto the scale and slides a card that has been
assigned to his truck through a card reader. The ORT reads the
encoded number from the card and transmits the information to
the system PLC. The system determines if this is a valid truck
and if so, retrieves database information from the computer
establishing loading parameters, customer and billing
information, product to be loaded, and volume. Then captures
the weight from the scale display.
Once the open hatch is detected, the spout is seated making
the system ready to load. The filling cycle is automatic and
fully integrated with the scale. Flexibility of the hardware
and software allows your system to grow as your business grows.
Custom designed menu option routines can give the driver
further instructions or allow input of any additional
information necessary to complete a weighing transaction.
