New : Vortex HDP® Slide Gate

Salina, KS -- The Vortex HDP Slide Gate, offers the dry bulk solids industry a revolutionary new valve with expanded capabilities.

This heavy duty slide gate:
• Handles non-abrasive to abrasive powders, granules, and pellets
• Isolates pressures up to 5 bars (75 psig) depending on size
• Will not leak to atmosphere or across valve
• Contains a displacement pocket that reduces/eliminates material packing as the blade closes
• Easily Maintained, 4” through 16” sizes

The HDP Slide Gate was developed to address these applications:
• Gates placed at the discharge of bins or silos experiencing high aeration
• Gates located above or below airlocks feeding into higher pressure conveying lines
• Gates used with scaling operations where air pressure leakage through the valve could potentially cause weight variances
• Process gates for dense phase conveying systems

Patent pending, unique features include:

Self-adjusting blade and clevis: At the end of the stroke, the blade rises vertically into the closed / sealed position. Seal adjustment and associated wear is greatly minimized. A displacement area at the end of the valve prevents material packing as the blade closes.

Self-adjusting bonnet seal cartridge: As with the blade and clevis, the “live loaded” bonnet seal cartridge mirrors the perpendicular movement of the blade. Depending on valve accessibility, bonnet seals may be changed without taking the gate out of place.

“Tombstone” blade design and outlet transition: The blade is unique in function and appearance. The tombstone shape allows for valve self-cleaning as well as enhanced sealing of material to the bonnet.

The new Vortex HDP addresses material handling issues in traditional fine material applications, plastics, and foods. It further addresses applications for industries handling cement and other fine powders where dense phase or high aeration conditions are present.

Belt Conveyor Design Workshops Announced

LAKEWOOD, CO -- Overland Conveyor Co Inc has announced its popular Conveyor Design Workshop has been scheduled for April 26-27 in Lakewood, CO. Hundreds of conveyor professionals have attended this course since its inception in 1998.

The Conveyor Design Workshop has now been re-worked to include all the new design methods and techniques published in 2005 in “Belt Conveyors for Bulk Materials”, 6th Edition, by the Conveyor Equipment Manufacturers Association.

In addition, a brand new Conveyor Transfer Chute Design workshop will precede it on April 24-25 featuring the use of Discrete Element Modeling simulation technology.

Reservations are now being accepted for both courses.

Overland Conveyor Co., Inc. is a consulting engineering firm based in Lakewood, CO who specializes in bulk material handling by belt conveyor. OCC provides belt conveyor system design, engineering and performance evaluations using both static (Belt Analyst II) and dynamic (Dynamic Analyst) methodologies. OCC also provides component design and engineering services using classical mathematical, solid, finite element and discrete element modeling techniques.

Herbold Granulators with Forced Feeding

Meckesheim, Germany -- HERBOLD has developed a new way to feed granulators. The material to be size-reduced does no longer fall by gravity into the grinding chamber but is evenly and horizontally fed into the rotor with the help of feeding screws. This way of material feeding presents the following advantages compared to the traditional configuration:

- Higher throughput, 30 to 50 % more capacity with the same size cutting chamber, compared to gravity fed machines,
- Even loading of the rotor, less fines and dust in the regrind,
- Reduced acoustic emission.
- No more flyback

A special advantage for the operator is the possibility of feeding a larger quantity of material to the storage tank and this quantity is then automatically treated. So it will not be necessary for the operator to continuously feed the material manually. Another advantage of this way of feeding is the increased degree of protection for the operator by preventing a material fly-back. Since the large opening, typical for belt or manual feeding, is no longer necessary, the acoustic emission is even more reduced.

HERBOLD has specialized in the recycling of scrap for the plastics industry, the recycling of used and mixed post consumer or post industrial plastics, the pulverization of plastics granules and regrind and many other applications of our machines in the preparation of materials, resource recycling and mechanical transforming in various industries.

Mr. Russell wants help with "fluff" storage and feeding:

We are polypropylene web film manufacturers (BOPP) and we reclaim everything in sight. Most of our reclaim is in the form of 0.001 inch (or less) film which has been ground through a small screen. This fluff (1-3 lbs/ft3) is easy to pneumatically convey but difficult to dispense from storage bins.

We have tried vee-bottomed bins with agitator bars. Flow aids like air cannons, shakers and vibrators only pack the material tighter. We have had some success with air sweeps, on flat surfaces.

Our most robust bunkers are cylindrical, with a rotating sweep arm to keep the fluff aerated and feed a screw conveyer discharge. These work fine unless the fluff is allowed to settle, and then sweep motor trips and bridging rear their ugly head.

So, who out there has a solid fluff hopper design we could consider?

Mr. Butler wants help railcar unloading pit design:

I am looking to get started on a railcar unloading pit design. The railcars will bottom dump sand into a transition, through a rotary feeder, and onto a belt conveyor.

Are there any places to look for typical design of the pit for this configuration? How are the tracks typically supported over the pit? What amount of clearance does the pit need, and how deep should it be?

Any feedback would really be appreciated! (to post reply, click here)

Friable Materials : Selecting a Pneumatic Conveying System

The vast majority of conveying systems are of the dilute phase type since they are less expensive and more adaptable. Dilute phase conveying also provides less particle to particle interaction, which reduces particle size and shape degradation. Whenever degradation is a concern, its three primary causes must be addressed: velocity of material, angle of impact, and hardness of the material impacted...(more)
