Tom Picone and the gang
at Thayer Scale. |
Atlanta, GA -- Your editor of this newsletter, spent a few
days walking the floor of this year's Southeast Powder Show.
With over 1,000 attendees, first on our "to do" list was to
visit with some of our old friends and site sponsors.
Luckily, all these folks were easily located in the spacious
exhibit hall.
At
the Thayer booth, I had a chance to meet Tom Picone and the
crew from Thayer Scale. Tom and his group sell those
long-lasting, weigh feeders and belt scales throughout the
world. You can visit their web site at:
http://www.thayerscale.com/
Thayer Scale has been a sponsor of our site and newsletter
for a number of years now.
I
moved on to the USA Tank booth and had time to chat with a
busy Brian Bell. Brian was telling me about a tank company
they had recently purchased to expand their capacity to
serve the bulk materials market. We will give you a full
report on their acquisition in a future news letter.
 |
|
Andy Nix and Denis Piche
of BulkFlow. |
Then it was off to see Denis
Piche of BulkFlow. Denis is a clever fellow and BulkFlow had
a lively exhibit including a working model of their bulk
solids cooler/heater in operation! Look Ma, No Air! Andy Nix
was there helping so you could find out more about
BulkFlow's products. Their web site is: http://www.solexthermal.com/
 |
|
Kevin Peterson chatting
with a customer at Salina Vortex's booth. |
The Salina Vortex booth was busy
as a beehive! Kevin Peterson and the guys never stopped as
their booth was swarming with customers. On a personal note,
Kevin has been working out and is currently looking to run a
few marathons and climb mountains, whew! Their web
site is:
http://www.salinavortex.com/
 |
|
Doan Pendleton of
Vac-U-Max, plus the guys from Processing Magazine.
|
Cruising through the exhibit
halls, we saw some interesting companies. One that comes to
mind is Grand View Media Group, the new publishers and
owners of Processing Magazine. Barry Lovette, the General
Manager and Mike Wasson the Publisher are on an aggressive
path develop and improve Processing Magazine for the bulk
materials engineer.
Note, in the photo, Barry is
the one who can't stand camera flash! Their web site
is at:
http://www.processingmagazine.com/
I would like to extend my
thanks to everyone I met, too many people to mention in this
article. I appreciate your time and attention. Also, it was
nice to meet people who are subscribers of our newsletter
and frequent visitors to Powder and Bulk Dot Com web site. I
look forward to seeing everyone again in at the Powders Show
in Chicago next year!

New : Magnetic Mount for
Vibrating Motors
Sydney,
Australia -- Serpent and Dove’s new ‘Mota-Mag’ Magnetic
Mounting provides new portability for vibrating motors being
attached to steel bins, hoppers or chutes to assist product
flow. With Mota-Mag, motors up to safe manual carrying
weight can be readily attached to, or detached from, bin
walls.
The
new product, in several sizes, employs numbers of empotted
neodymium (rare earth) magnet elements, providing enormous
strength in a shallow magnetic field. The vibrating motor is
simply bolted to Mota-Mag which then magnetically attaches
to the bin or hopper wall with a force of up to 600 kgs.
Once
attached to the steel wall, removal is easily effected by
cam action with the lever-handle. Mota-Mag enables vibrators
to be moved from bin to bin as required or to be easily
re-positioned on a bin for best product flow results.

Low Profile : Flexible Screw Weigh Batching System
BETHLEHEM, PA -- A new
Flexicon Weigh Batching System designed for mezzanines
and other low headroom areas utilizes Low Profile
Flexible Screw Conveyors configured with motor drives at
the inlet end of the conveyor, significantly reducing
height and width requirements at the discharge end,
according to David Boger, sales manager.

This automated system is
comprised of eight low profile conveyors fed by
roof-mounted storage vessels, with each group of four
conveyors feeding either of two gain-in-weight hoppers
that gravity discharge through the mezzanine floor to a
ribbon blender at ground level.
A system controller starts
and stops each conveyor to weigh ingredients in
sequence, first at high feed rate for rapid filling,
then at dribble feed rate, stopping material flow once
the accurate batch weight has been gained by the hopper.
System software automatically compensates for
material-in-flight by stopping the conveyor in advance
of attaining final batch weights.
The controller then opens the
slide gate valve of the weigh hopper in use, discharging
the batch into the ribbon blender, then closes the valve
allowing concurrent weighing of a subsequent batch,
reducing cycle time by half.
The enclosed, dust-free
conveyors can reportedly handle products ranging from
sub-micron powders to large pellets, including those
that pack, cake, plug, seize, smear or fluidize, with no
separation of blended products.
The only moving part
contacting material is a flexible inner screw said to
maximize reliability while reducing maintenance. The
removable screw and tube interior are smooth and
crevice-free, allowing rapid, thorough cleaning.
The company also manufactures
pneumatic conveying systems, bulk bag dischargers, bulk
bag fillers, bag dump stations, drum dumpers and
engineered plant-wide bulk handling systems with
automated controls to industrial, food, dairy and
pharmaceutical standards.

Mr. Franks wants help with
silo discharge screw conveyor:
I have a 50' high x 12'
diameter silo with a flooded variable pitch screw conveyor
serving to discharge the stored material which is granular
sugar with a bulk density of 55 lbs/ cu ft. I assume
the 50' high column of sugar creates an additional load on
the screw conveyor.
How does one calculate the
horsepower required to overcome this additional load?

Mr. Sierra wants help with
conveying detergent:
I'm looking for help to find
suppliers of vertical or steep (60 degrees or more)
conveyors for relatively sticky powders (detergent
granules).
The constraints are: low
cost, low shear/forces and small footprint. This pretty much
rules out pneumatic solutions. Bucket elevators don't work
due to stickiness and resulting make up.
