Buhler Gets the Vitamins into Feeds
------------------------------------------------------------
Rhône-Poulenc, the international French-based Group, has
invested in a new regional center of operations in Singapore.
The company relies on state-of-the-art Buhler technology for
the production of vitamin concentrates for formulated animal
feeds. The production center allows Rhône-Poulenc to produce
a large number of vitamin concentrates for the feed manufacturing
industry which meet the most stringent standards and are
tailored to customers' specific needs. In addition, the products
can be distributed throughout Asia within a shorter time.
Proportioning of minute quantities
Depending on the particular product quantity and product
characteristics (for example flow behavior), Rhône-Poulenc
stores the raw materials and vitamins in bins of different
sizes and designs. Special discharge systems convey the required
product quantities via scales to the mixer. Vitamins and other
micro-ingredients are stored in a micro-feeder system equipped
with 20 small storage bins. Another row of bins is used for
the storage of macro-vitamins and carrier substances. The
Speedmix DFML high-speed mixer mixes the individual substances
into a homogeneous mix and transfers them directly to the
MWPA single-spout bagger, where the concentrate is packed
and made ready for shipping.
Dust filter prevents contamination
Aspiration systems equipped with Airjet MVRS dust collection
filters support the different production stages. They ensure
a dust free work environment and reduce contamination. System
components in contact with products are made mostly of
stainless steel. This ensures a long service life, improves
the product flow, and again reduces contamination when product
formulas are changed. The plant has been specifically designed
for vertical product flows in order to completely eliminate
the need for intermediate lifts. This significantly reduces
the risk of product segregation and contamination. A
state-of-the-art PLC system (PIC) controls the production
process. Based on a PC, an integrated monitoring and
visualization system monitors each production stage. The DP
system SAP/R3 of Rhône-Poulenc is integrated in the process
control system and, being a higher-ranking system, monitors
and checks the production process. This enables Rhône-Poulenc
to perform extremely precise control at the highest level.

New FitzSieve for Low Energy Milling
------------------------------------------------------------
To complete its range of size reduction equipment, Fitzpatrick
will soon launch the new low-energy Fitz®Sieve (patent pending).
The newly designed Fitz®Sieve is a state-of -the-art
low-energy size reduction unit with a wide range of applications
in the pharmaceutical, chemical and food industries. The
Fitz®Sieve provides process flexibility ideal for
de-agglomeration, classifying, calibrating and gentle size
reduction. The underdrive has the advantage of better cGMP
system integration and improved process flow.
The Fitzpatrick engineers have designed the Fitz®Sieve with a
minimum of process parts that can be easily disassembled for
cleaning in a few minutes only. It also allows to change a
screen rapidly. Also assembling the process parts is made
easy and fast. A wide range of screens and rotors is available
to suit your specific application.
To improve the process performance, a unique system has been
provided to adjust the rotor-to-screen clearance. The operator
screws the rotor into position until no clearance exists
between the rotor and the screen. The required rotor-to-screen
clearance is then obtained by turning the rotor in the
opposite direction by a number of slots that are clearly
visible on the top of the shaft and rotor. Each slot represents
a fixed rotor-to-screen distance. If a specific clearance
is required, the operator needs to unscrew the rotor by a
specific number of slots.

Hot Messages from the Help Forum
------------------------------------------------------------
People post their requests for help and offer their suggestions
to others in our open forum.
Mr. Patterson has a "packing" problem with iron powder:
We are moving an Iron material, very dense, very fine (100%
passing -200 mesh) via rail car. This material flows great while
loading a pneumatic truck (25 tons ~ 3 minutes) and loading from
the pneumatic truck to a rail car (25 tons one hour)but packs
in the rail car after the 7-10 day journey and will not come
out. The material is 80% Fe2O3 and ~15% CaO and minor constituents.
Could this be a mechanical/plastic flow, chemical or electrostatic
forces at work? Prompt reply GREATLY APPRECIATED.
Phone number is (636) 789-2803, fax (636) 789-2903
mailto:cemtech@theriver.net
Please ask for Richard Patterson. Thank you.
Mr. Dougherty wants wants to dedust toner powder:
Looking for advice on alternative "cost effective" processes
(<$50K) for making powder copier toner into a non-dusty form
(e.g., sludge, chips). Minimum 2 to 5 tons/hour throughput.
Material is in fiber drums and supersacs. Any suggestions on
pelletizing, agglomerators or wetting of this material? Portable
rental unit or turnkey processing in Virginia is also a
possibility.

Stacy wants to mull iron oxide with carbon black:
I am trying to mull dense metal oxide powder with carbon black.
I have 3 sizes of mullers, and I cannot get the large production
muller to replicate the performance of the 2 small lab size
mullers. The final tap density of the mulled powders should be
higher than I can achieve in the large muller. I have tried
blending powders first, raising the wheels and lowering the
wheels. Does anyone have any advice on parameters that might
help increase the tap density?
Thanks, Stacy

Mr. Wallace needs help with grinding resins:
My company is involved with the manufacture of colored
masterbatches used in the coloring of plastic resin.
High levels of Pigment (color) are compounded together
with plastic resin to produce a color concentrate
(masterbatch). Problems arise due to pigment separation.
To overcome this we replace the plastic granules with powder.
Polyethylene powder is readily available as it ground
for rotational moulding (on disc mills). With grinding
Engineering Resins ; Polycarbonate, Nylon, Polypropylene,
Acetal, PBT and elastomers ; EVA and Polyurethane etc.
there is a problem. Primarily the volumes are very
low 25-50kgs (typical), frequent grade changes are
necessary ( e.g. 5-6 different grades of Nylon - easy
cleaning essential) - and when it comes to grinding
the softer resins - some form of Cryogenics has
traditionally been used.
I have had some experience in grinding polyethylene
(200-300kgs/hour - Wedco Mills), but when trying to
grind Polypropylene Copolymer the the tenacity of the
resin caused high friction - and the resin melted between
the blades. This I suspect would happen with the other
engineering resins.
I believe a variable speed disc mill (Wedco type- but
smaller) with coarse teeth may be able to do the job.
No specific particle size distribution (Max 2000 microns)
is required and maybe dry ice, could be used for the
softer materials. Would prefer no screening, so it
would be a 1-pass operation.
Basically I am looking to starve feed granules into a
hopper and drop them through a mill - straight into a bag.
Output - minimum 25-50 kgs/hour - but 75-100kgs preferred.
Do you think you can offer a machine that can meet this
specification? Your comment would be appreciated.
Look forward to hearing from you - thanks and kind regards
Sandy Wallace
