Powders Show and Mag Sold to
Apprise Media
Los
Angeles, CA -- Canon Communications LLC, an Apprise Media
Company, today announced an agreement in principle to
acquire eight trade shows and one magazine dedicated to the
US advanced, technology-based manufacturing sectors from
Reed Elsevier.
This acquisition will significantly expand and enhance
Canon’s portfolio of business-to-business media products
serving the nation’s $1 trillion advanced, technology-based
manufacturing industry. Terms of the transaction were not
disclosed.
Already the producer of the leading events on the West and
East coasts for advanced manufacturing, Canon will now also
be positioned as the primary trade show producer in the
Midwest, which has the largest concentration of advanced,
technology-based manufacturing in the nation. The
acquisition will additionally expand and strengthen Canon’s
events serving the Southeast and New England manufacturing
regions.
The sale of exhibitions serving the manufacturing and
industrial sectors is part of a strategic refocusing of the
Reed Elsevier business to business operations in North
America. The company’s Reed Exhibitions unit will increase
its focus on the home enhancement, security, luxury &
lifestyle and life science/healthcare sectors where it
already manages a portfolio of market leading events.
“This follow-on acquisition, when fully integrated by our
highly experienced management team, will position Canon as
the leading producer of trade shows and related media
serving the nation’s vibrant advanced manufacturing sector,"
said Canon Chairman and CEO Charles G. McCurdy. “We are very
pleased to have the opportunity to strategically incorporate
these events into our highly successful operating platform.”
The Reed Elsevier trade shows to be acquired are: Assembly
Technology Expo, National Manufacturing Week, International
Powder & Bulk Solids, and Quality Expo, all in Rosemont, IL;
NEPCON East/Assembly East, in Boston; Quality Expo Detroit,
in Novi, MI; AM Expo, in Greenville, SC; and Powder & Bulk
Solids Southeast, in Atlanta.
As a complement to the Powder & Bulk Solids show, Canon will
also be acquiring Powder/Bulk Solids magazine, the number
one publication for this aspect of the plastics, packaging,
chemical, food and other related industries already served
by Canon’s publications and trade shows.
“In less than a year, Canon has fulfilled our goal of
expanding our role in the advanced, technology-based
manufacturing sector through organic and acquisition-driven
growth in North America, Europe and ,” McCurdy said. “As the
acquisitions of the Reed assets and of Octo Media earlier
this year illustrate, this is a very attractive segment in
which we can increase the critical role we play globally. We
will continue to look closely at other acquisitions that
will increase Canon’s market reach and leverage the talent
of a highly experienced management team. At the same time,
we will look to continue Canon’s success in strong organic
growth.”
“We have always been proud of our manufacturing and
industrial events and have worked hard to increase value for
all of our customers. We are pleased that even as we turn
our attention to investing in and growing other areas of the
market, our long-time customers and events in manufacturing
will find a great fit with Canon,” said Chet Burchett,
President of Reed Exhibitions, .

New Features : Siemens'
Milltronics BW500 Integrator
Peterborough,
Canada -- New features available with the Milltronics BW500
integrator make it a powerful integrator for use with both
belt scales and weighfeeders. The new features include a
second speed sensor input, and optional moisture sensor and
incline sensor inputs.
The detection of broken belts, defective speed sensors and
other differential speed changes are now possible with the
addition of a second speed sensor input. The user can set a
limit to monitor the speed differential between the two
speed sensor inputs. The second speed signal is compared to
the primary speed signal and will initiate an alarm
condition if the second speed signal is outside the
programmed high and low alarm setpoints. This feature can
act as an early warning system to avoid costly process
interruptions and equipment breakdown. The secondary speed
sensor is especially useful on variable speed conveyors, and
may also be used to detect a malfunction in the primary
speed sensor.
An optional moisture sensor input has been added as an
alternative to a fixed moisture percentage value resulting
in even greater accuracy. The new moisture sensor input
value allows the BW500 to compensate for the moisture in the
material being weighed. It factors out the moisture
component of load, rate and total calculations. The
resulting factored values are the dry mean values of the
material being weighed without any additional weight for
moisture.
Accuracy is also improved with the addition of an incline
sensor input for belt scales mounted on variable incline
conveyors. Incline compensation is used to compensate for
the varying vertical force component applied to the belt
scale due to changes in incline of the conveyor. As the
incline of the conveyor increases, the vertical force
component applied to the belt scale decreases requiring a
recalibration at each angle to maintain the expected
accuracy. The Milltronics BW500 incline compensation feature
automatically adjusts load readings as the incline of the
conveyor changes, eliminating the need for costly and
time-consuming recalibrations.
First launched in 1999, the BW500 is widely used in
industries using belt scales and weighfeeders, especially
the cement, aggregate and mining industries. Operating with
any belt scale or weighfeeder with up to four strain gauge
load cells, or any LVDT equipped belt scale, or weighfeeder,
the BW500 processes belt load and speed signals for accurate
flow rate and totalized weight of bulk solids. The patented
electronic load cell-balancing feature makes the BW500 a
world leader in system accuracy.

Mr. Weei wants help with a
caking problem:
We produce copper sulphate
pentahydrate crystal using batch system. We are facing the
crystal caking problem while the materials arrived at end
user place. We do add anticaking agent to prevent the caking
problem but it seem does not solve the problem. The crystal
is free flowing at our site after adding the anticaking
agent.
Is removing the moisture content of the material by drying
will help the problem? Anyone has better suggestion? (to post reply, click here)

Mr. Marmuscak needs help with
venting blenders:
This project calls for
upgrading primary relief protection on 2 blenders, in
accordance with NFPA guidelines. Vent panels attach directly
to blender nozzle flanges. Relief ducting [approximately 36
inches diameter] rises vertically to and through a roof,
terminating 12-15 feet above the roofline.
Client's manufacturing facility is located in upstate NY.
I need to protect this discharge point from entry of
precipitation, dust, rodents and birds. [Actually anything
that may compromise the integrity of panel to function as
designed.] Protection method must also minimize relief duct
back-pressure, in the event of vent panel rupture. Potential
for snow and ice accumulation on any coverings might raise
other issues.
Does anyone have a success or failure story to share?
