Detect the Minutest Particles

Lock Inspection Saves Baker's Buns

Fitchburg, MA -- Fantini Baking is the first company to benefit from installing Lock's MET 30+ touchscreen detector with ADC software, following its launch in Spring 2002. The Massachusetts-based baker was looking for a metal detection system that could cope with different breads and temperatures. Lock's ADC software allows changes in signals to be identified and the detector to be adjusted, so delivering accurate detection of the minutest particles of metal - whatever the product or temperature.

Click hereProducts such as warm bread are notoriously difficult to inspect as they are conductive and can interfere with the detector coil current. Combine this with variations in temperature, moisture and salt content, and the likely outcome is frequent false rejections. As a baker of specialty breads, Fantini needed a detector capable of ensuring consistently high sensitivity levels in the face of a range of variables, including product temperatures of up to 110°F.

By taking signals from the metal detector and displaying them on-screen in graphical format, ADC acts as a 'window to the detection envelope'. The software's easy-to-interpret images allow the user to fine-tune the detector settings to match the product being inspected - so the tiniest contaminants can be detected. Previously operated from a laptop, ADC has been available via a user-friendly touchscreen operator panel on the detector itself since Spring 2002.

"We make a variety of bread loaves that present different signals to the metal detector, sometimes changing from day to day due to change in temperatures in our cooling process, and we need a system that will set up easily," explained Reggie Bourassa, plant engineer at Fantini Baking Company. "Lock's ADC technology allows us to do this by viewing the detection field, so necessary changes can be done immediately and accurately. Having ADC technology with a laptop was great, but the new touchscreen option on the detector is even better. The end result is the best possible sensitivities for all metals."

Based in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, and Oldham, UK, Lock Inspection Systems supplies metal detection and checkweighing equipment to food manufacturers worldwide. A global network of offices and distributors enables Lock to deliver the highest standards of customer service and after sales care.

Centrifuges

Market for Sedimentation Equipment Will Exceed $5B by 2007

Northbrook, IL -- The world market for centrifuges, clarifiers, dissolved air flotation systems, and hydrocyclones will grow from just over $4 billion in 2002 to just under $5 billion in 2006 and by 2007 will be comfortably over the $5 billion mark. This is the forecast provided by the McIlvaine Company in the continually updated online report Sedimentation & Centrifugation World Markets.

Clarifiers and thickeners will generate the most revenues. These gravity settling devices are widely used. They are found in every country from Australian mines to Finnish sewage treatment plants. The second largest equipment category is the disc centrifuge that is used as a dairy separator as well as a purifier of pharmaceuticals, wine, and many other products. Third on the list is the decanter centrifuge. It dewaters sewage sludge and coal fines as well as food products.

Fourth place belongs to the miscellaneous centrifuge segment. Basket and pusher centrifuges are widely used in the chemical industry and are used in sugar and other food processing applications as well. In fifth place is the dissolved air flotation (DAF) system. This device is replacing sand filters in municipal drinking water purification as well as cleaning wastewater in chicken processing plants and drive-in car washes. Last on the list with just 13% of the market is the hydrocyclone which is used in minerals processing and power plant scrubber wastewater cleaning.

The clarifier market became more concentrated with GL&V purchasing first Dorr Oliver and then Eimco. The resultant combination has a good share of the mining market. But USFilter is the leader in clarifiers in the municipal segment. Alfa Laval is the leader in both the decanter and disc centrifuge category followed GEA Westfalia who is second in both categories. Because of the high speed and demanding manufacturing requirements there is less Asian competition in centrifuges than in the other devices. The centrifuge market is dominated by U.S. European and Japanese manufacturers. In contrast there are clarifier and DAF suppliers in virtually every country.

Municipal wastewater is now the largest application for sedimentation and centrifugation equipment followed by the mining and food industries. However by 2006 the food industry will be the largest segment. The pharmaceutical industry is one of the smaller segments with projected 2003 revenues of $236 million but it is the highest growth segment. In 2006 projected revenues are $288 million. This is in part due to the critical role that disc separators play in the production of biotechnology products.

There will be a substantial increase in the purchase of clarifiers/thickeners and hydrocyclones by U.S. power plants as they install flue gas desulfurization systems over the next eight years. The biggest growth market, however, will be China which is making huge investments to build wastewater treatment plants. At the same time it is also experiencing growth in the basic industries which are also major users of sedimentation and centrifugation equipment.

Modular Design

New Loss-in-Weight Bulk Bag Discharger

Allegan, MI -- The new modular Material Master bulk bag discharger offers features which maximize production efficiency. Automatically sequenced Flo-Master bag massagers and Power- Flo bag impactors promote positive material flow, while a Flo-Lock discharge spout closure system provides complete product flow shut off.

A Seal-Master bag spout chamber with gull wing doors offers enhanced bag spout access, while a Sure-Seal spout clamp system seals the bag discharge spout for dust-tight discharge. Unit includes a loss-in-weight scale system with surge hopper and rotary valve. Modular design allows units to be customized to fit individual application requirements.

Features include:

  • 1 ton Harrington hoist with motorized trolley with pendant and festooning.
  •  I-beam monorail with 1" thick mounts.
  • Spider-Lift bag hangar frame is easy to use, adapts to multiple bag sizes, and features safety strap stops.
  • Power-Flo mid-bag impactor system discourages material rat-holing or bridging higher in the bag.
  • Flo-Lock pneumatic discharge spout closure system provides complete and reliable product flow shut off.
  • Exclusive design protects load cells by placing load cells above floor level.

Mr. Molloy wants help with segregation:

Need help to prevent segregation of individual ingredients in a PVC blend after lean phase conveying into a holding silo. Find that as the silo is filled, the denser ingredient (in this case Chalk), tends to separate out and stick to  the walls of the silo.

The material in the center of the silo (mainly PVC resin with absorbed plasticizer) empties first with the denser material (chalk) emptying last. This leads to a batch ( ~10,000 kg) of PVC compound with low initial specific gravities and nearing the last 2,000 kg, the density rises dramatically.

Mr. Van der Veken needs help with vacuum conveying:

We are a small company in Belgium who builds installations for the bulk-industry. Now we have a project with this problem.

On a height of 10 meters we have a mixer with a batch of 1,500 kg product. Before they start to mix, they have to add 80 kg very fine powder (i.e. colors and EDTA's). When we blow it in with a pneumatic system, the air breaks the seals from the mixer.

We can place a socking machine, but then we have another problem: When the colors are into the mixer, we start immediately to spray a liquid on the batch. So the spray is coming into the filter and this one will become blocked.  Now we have to find some filter that is resistant to liquids.

I think we can work better with a vacuum-transport, so we have no more overpressure into our mixer. We have no experience with vacuum transport, so we are looking for a company who does.
