Shipments Up

Conveyor Industry Looks For Recovery in 2003

NAPLES, FLORIDA – The Conveyor Equipment Manufacturers Association (CEMA) reports that through the second quarter, booked and billed sales remained down year over year for the conveyor industry as they were for most industries in early 2002. Booked sales are estimated at $2.2 billion, and shipments are estimated at $2.6 billion through the second quarter. Shipments outpaced booked orders by 14%, which is less than the 20% reported for the previous year according to Lee Schomberg, CEMA President, who announced the results at the Association’s fall meeting in Chicago in September.

While bookings for tow conveyors increased significantly, bookings and shipments in all unit categories (unit handling conveyors-light to medium, unit handling conveyors-heavy duty, trolley-light duty, trolley-heavy duty, tow conveyors, unit components and conveyor chain) were down on average 38% and 35% respectively for the same period year over year.

Bookings and shipments for bulk conveyor accessories continued to increase by 39% and 34% respectively over the same period in 2001, and bookings for bulk systems saw an increase of 48%. Bookings for screw conveyor and bulk components were down only slightly. Billings for screw conveyors stayed about the same through the second quarter as they were in 2001. Billings for bulk components were down slightly, but billings for bulk systems and bulk equipment were down 45% on average.

Founded in 1933, CEMA is the North American association of leading conveyor equipment manufacturers. CEMA tracks seven classes of unit handling equipment and five classes of bulk handling equipment.

The executives representing CEMA member companies who attended the fall meeting were optimistic that a recovery in the conveyor industry would occur in 2003. CEMA also makes available to both member and nonmember companies, safety labels for all types of conveyor equipment as well as useful technical information and manuals.

Food Equipment Company Purchases SolidWorks Software

CONCORD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 18, 2002-- Five subsidiaries of Horstmann Lebensmittelgruppe will replace 2D design software with SolidWorks to bring products to market faster in 100 countries Five members of one of the world's largest food industry companies are using 70 licenses of SolidWorks three-dimensional computer-aided design (3D CAD) software to design their industrial baking machines, SolidWorks announced today. These subsidiaries of the Horstmann Lebensmittelgruppe are using SolidWorks to transition from 2D to 3D design and accelerate product design cycles to bring bread-making equipment to market more quickly than with 2D design software.

The Horstmann companies are using SolidWorks to design the commercial equipment used to knead dough and bake bread in small bakery kitchens and large plants in more than 100 countries. All of the companies will use SolidWorks to design everything from the equipment that mixes the batter and pours it into the baking pan to the equipment that removes the excess flour off of a freshly baked loaf of bread.

Large commercial baking companies rely on precisely engineered, automated machines linked together by a web of conveyor belts. SolidWorks' large assembly and collision detection capabilities will help the Horstmann companies ensure that every element in the system operates exactly as it should, so they can meet strict daily production schedules.

"SolidWorks is a complete 3D design solution that is easy to learn and use. These were key factors in our decision to purchase the software," said Martin Zielonka, IT coordinator for the Horstmann companies. "In addition, the software's parametric design capabilities will allow us to modify designs as we go, enabling us to immediately see how changes affect overall designs. SolidWorks will significantly speed up the design process, saving time and money associated with creating physical prototypes of machines."

The companies are using SolidWorks Office, including SolidWorks 3D CAD software for product design, and eDrawings for streamlining design review and approval via e-mail. The companies are also using SolidWorks' COSMOSFloWorks product to conduct flow analysis to make sure the equipment will properly transport the liquid ingredients involved in the baking process.

"The Horstmann companies have a commitment to provide its customers worldwide with high-quality baking equipment," said Michel Gros, executive vice president, Europe for SolidWorks Corporation. "By choosing SolidWorks, the standard in mainstream 3D CAD software, they are ensuring they will continue to design and deliver the quality products their customers have come to expect."

Horstmann companies are working with SolidWorks reseller SPI for ongoing software implementation, training, and support.

Densify Thermoplastics

New PlastCompactor Guarantees Top Quality

EXTON, PA, — Netzsch-Condux, a proven leader in manufacturing dry grinding, classification and compaction equipment, offers the best solution for your compacting and recycling applications - the Plastcompactor CV. The Netzsch-Condux Plastcompactor CV is a state-of-the-art disc agglomerator used to densify any thermoplastic materials, including thin film edge trim, carpeting rejects, polyester foam, plastic fibers, and pre-sorted domestic waste.

Click hereThe Netzsch-Condux Plastcompactor CV stands for gentle, free flowing granulate manufactured economically from leftover film, fiber and foam materials. This efficient and easy to maintain machine does not compact at the melting point of the material. Compacting takes place at the softening temperature, therefore avoiding thermal molecular degradation and a reduction of the material’s viscosity. The final process obtains top-quality granulates with a bulk density and fluidity almost identical to that of the original product, without a thermal history.

Compared to an Extruder, the Plastcompactor CV is a lower investment cost for processing films and fibers. This machine can be used for inline recycling in the production processes in which the granulate is returned directly to the production line. In addition, offline recycling is possible. In this application, the material scrap is transported to an offsite location for processing.

Optional accessories for the Plastcompactor CV include: dosing systems for adding coloring agents, variable speed feed screw, and automated controls.

Mr. Gordon needs a screw feeder:

Are there any inexpensive screw-type or other feeders for addition of citric acid to a tank?  A pH controller would activate the feeder until the ideal pH was met, then shut off the feeder.
