Pharmaceuticals : New Cryogenic Cross-Flow Filter Dryer

Liverpool, England -- This unique process system accommodates a multitude of applications, suitable for both Pharmaceutical and BioProcessing.

Complementing Powder Systems Limited's (PSL's) existing range of High Containment Filter Dryers, this 0.05m2 unit accommodates cryogenic operations down to -196°C. The conventional base plate filtration is enhanced with a sintered mesh filter media built into the wall of the vessel enabling unique cross flow filtration. A variable speed controlled agitator is fitted with metallic bellows offering a 125mm manual raise and lower traverse.

Product recovery is achieved by manually articulating the vessel body and discharging through the PSL ChargePoint high containment powder transfer valve, ensuring that the entire process is fully contained. With a cake capacity of 6 liters and 12 liters liquid volume, this Filter Dryer is ideal for research and development, pilot scale production and clinical trials.

PSL was formed in 1989 and specializes in the engineering and supply of process equipment and high containment and product protection systems for the pharmaceutical industry. The largest pharmaceutical companies in the world form part of our customer base including GlaxoSmithKline, Merck, AstraZeneca, Novartis, Pfizer, and many more.

Belt Conveyors : Improved Clipper Microlacer Offers Faster Splicing

DOWNERS GROVE, IL -- An improved tool for on-site manual installation of Clipper Wire Hook Lacing in light-duty conveyor belts is being introduced by Flexco. While retaining the earlier tool's familiar name, the new Clipper Microlacer deeply embeds the belt splice quicker and with less wear on the tool.

The lacer head has been completely redesigned for added durability and strength, which enables the Microlacer to embed lacing hooks deeper and tighter into the belt. This lower- profile splice provides greater holding strength, longer service life and less wear on splice-contacting conveyor components. Lacer guide blocks have been widened to full lacer head width, providing maximum bearing surface for greater wear resistance and minimal maintenance. Face-strip locking now is done with a knurled knob that allows simple finger tightening in place of the flathead screw that was difficult to reach with a screwdriver. The new Lacer design also introduces an offset drive handle for greater leverage at one end so more of the splice installation passes can be done conveniently with one hand.

Clipper Roller Lacers are designed for easy on-site splice installation by only one person, lacing even wide belts in a single operation. Sized to accommodate belt widths up to 14" (350mm) with a single set-up, the Microlacer features a continuous lacing capability that allows the user to lace belts wider than the lacer width.

Flexco, headquartered near Chicago, IL/USA, services the world's belt conveyors through subsidiaries operating in California, Michigan, Mexico, England, Germany, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Founded in 1907 and certified under ISO-9001:2000 International Standards for Quality Management, the company markets its broad line of products through a worldwide network of distributors, under the brand names Flexco(R), Alligator(R), Clipper(R) and Tatch-A-Cleat(R).

Powders : Dust-Free, Drum Containment System for Safe Transfers

Union, NJ -- An innovative, portable, self-contained Drum Containment System (DCS) available from De Dietrich Process Systems (DDPS) keeps toxic, explosive, flammable powdered materials, and powders with difficult flow characteristics totally contained to eliminate cross-contamination and personnel exposure during transfer operations from drums into any type of vessel or other container.

DCS technology uses multiple containment barriers, which enable powder to be transferred in any environment, directly into process equipment by a single operator. Unmatched flexibility, operator protection, and ease of operation present a cost-effective alternative to personnel protective equipment (PPE) and gravity-dependent transfer devices required by traditional powder transfer operations.

DCS is designed to be used in conjunction with Powder Transfer System (PTS). PTS pneumatically conveys material, by dense phase, into a chamber then releases it under slight nitrogen pressure directly into the vessel. The compact PTS can discharge into a vessel under pressure, vacuum or with solvents present.

With an OEL (operator exposure level) of considerably less than 1 µgm/m3 @ 1m per 8 hrs., a single operator receives substantial protection from product exposure. A suction lance connected to a PTS, easily manipulated from outside the glove box, enables the operator to transfer powders without the discomfort of protective gear, and without lifting heavy bags in the confined space of a glove box isolator.

DCS works by using the double liners of the product drum as a containment barrier directly inside the glove box. The operator freely manipulates the suction lance outside the glove box to transfer the material. After transfer, a containment barrier forms over the glove box and the drum so that the next drum can be put in place ready for protective transfer. The DCS can be completely cleaned and maintained in a totally contained fashion.

The height adjustable DCS is suitable for lined drums containing any powder material. In addition, the unit can be easily moved from one production area to another by means of a forklift or a pallet truck.
