Total Containment : The New PBSC Transfer Isolator

Click hereUK -- 'Two heads are better than one', may be an old cliché, but in certain circumstances sharing knowledge and expertise can prove of great benefit. This is particularly true when the 'two heads' are those of Carlisle Life Sciences Europe and CTT Ltd, manufacturers of the IchemE award-winning Drumvent system. The result is the PBSC Total Transfer Isolator, in which a Drumvent head is contained within a sealed PBSC transfer hatch for secondary containment.

The Drumvent is a ventilated high-containment liquid transfer unit used to fill or empty standard industry drums. Now fully-contained, the target of 100% containment is getting ever closer.

"The development of the Drumvent since 1995 is such that it now satisfies all pharmaceutical requirements," says Stuart Anderson, MD at CTT Ltd, adding that, with the latest model, the emission of hazardous vapors is now guaranteed to less than 0.01ppm within the operator's breathing zone. However, to minimize risk when operators are handling highly corrosive, highly toxic, highly potent or highly odorous liquids, the need for secondary containment becomes of paramount importance.

To address this situation, CTT turned to the containment experts at Carlisle Life Sciences Europe. Flush viewing panels, vents and easy-open glass doors ensure a user-friendly operation with almost total containment achieved through negative pressure. At the end of each filling or emptying operation there is a short air purge time which clears the isolator before the next operation.

"The Drumvent does achieve the low emission figure of 0.01 ppm," says Martyn Ryder, Product Development Director at Carlisle Life Sciences Europe, "but this new cost-effective isolator means that we can target zero emission, as this secondary containment will reduce this figure by a further factor of 1000."

The advantage of placing a Drumvent unit within an isolator is that it eliminates and prevents all contact between operator and product and is, therefore, ideal for corrosive substances. For filling, emptying, sampling, sealing or weighing, the PBSC Total Transfer Isolator ensures total safety, total containment and total satisfaction.

Powders Show : Co-Located with Chemical Technology Conference

Click hereNorwalk, CT -- The Chemical Technology Conference & Expo, a new event, will co-locate with the International Powder & Bulk Solids Conference/Exhibition from May 4-6, 2004 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont (Chicago), IL. The Chemical Technology Conference & Expo was launched in response to overwhelming interest from attendees at the 2002 International Powder & Bulk Solids Conference/Exhibition.

"We surveyed attendees at the 2002 Powder & Bulk Solids show, and learned that 74% are also interested in seeing the broad range of products, services and equipment that serve the entire Chemical Process Industries (CPI) in addition to the dry products already present," said Kevin Richards, Industry Vice President for Reed Exhibitions Processing Technology Group.

The survey also revealed that 90% of 2002 attendees have the authority to purchase all products, both dry and fluid, related to process manufacturing.

"By co-locating the new Chemical Technology Conference & Expo, we can now offer attendees complete processing solutions and give them full lines of processing equipment and technologies, thus connecting buyers and sellers from every chemical process industry, " Richards said.

Current exhibitors who will be showcasing their technologies and services to the entire CPI at the event in May include companies like: Kason, Mixon/Elcan, Processall, Russell Finex, Piab Vacuum Conveyors, Sweco, Kemutec Group, Wyssmont, Canty, Jeinke & Johanson and Littleford Day. Chemical Equipment, the publication for engineers and executives in process plants that manufacture chemicals, refined petroleum, food, paper and other products, is the official media sponsor of the Chemical Technology Conference & Expo.

The Chemical Technology Conference will feature a series of accredited short courses produced by The Center for Professional Advancement (CFPA), an international leader in continuing education and technical training and official education provider for the event. The program will include in-depth training focused on the following areas:

  • Aspects of Fluid Mixing: In Line Mixing and Jet Mixing
  • Emulsions: Formulation Strategies and Stability Testing
  • Transforming Powders into Applicable Suspensions

"The Center for Professional Advancement is a world leader in providing CPI professionals with practical, insightful training. We're excited to be working with them on this event," commented Cindy Strachan, Director of Industry Development, for Reed.

International Powder & Bulk Solids Conference/Exhibition is a biennial event for process manufacturing professionals who process, handle, package, transport, test and store dry particulates and bulk solids. Sponsored by the Process Equipment Manufacturers' Association (PEMA) and Powder/Bulk Solids magazine, International Powder & Bulk Solids features a four-day conference program and over 500 exhibiting companies. Both events are produced by Reed Exhibitions, the world's leading organizer of trade and consumer exhibitions with a portfolio of over 430 events in 32 countries.

Mr. Mechowski wants to convey metal fibers:

I'm trying to accurately and consistently feed a chopped metal fiber stream at a 120pph rate. The metal fibers are similar to brass brake pad fillers.

Is there anyone familiar with this material and the proper conveying equipment. It tends to intertwine and ball up and that's helped by it's high specific gravity. (Click here to post a reply)

Mr. Milman needs to design a belt feeder:

I need information how to calculate parameters of troughing belt feeder, namely, belt tension, maximum recommending belt speed, vertical  load on the belt from material weight in the hopper discharge area.

Any advice about where to find material in question will be greatly appreciated. (Click here to post a reply)
