Accelrys Introduces Materials Studio 2.2

SAN DIEGO, Oct. 31 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Accelrys Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Pharmacopeia, Inc. (NASDAQ: PCOP) , today announced the release of Materials Studio(TM) 2.2. This latest release features new and improved tools in the polymer, crystallization and catalysis areas. Products and processes as diverse as nanotechnology and bulk chemical production can be investigated and improved upon using Materials Studio functionality.

Click hereThe flexible client-server architecture of Materials Studio 2.2 allows researchers to create complex scenarios on Windows(R)-based PCs, perform extensive calculations on dedicated server machines, seamlessly view the results back on the PC and readily share this information with colleagues. The Materials Studio portfolio has been enhanced to include Forcite, MesoDyn and X-Cell, which address atomistic, mesoscale and crystallization issues, respectively. The DMol3 and CASTEP codes are now available on Itanium(R) 2-based HP servers, with other modules to follow in 2003. CASTEP now has the capabilities of calculating the phonon spectrum of a material using linear response, thereby giving access to the thermodynamical properties of materials at the ab initio level for the first time within Materials Studio.

Materials Studio is currently used in a number of industries including: chemical, petrochemical, polymer, cosmetics, personal care, etc. Continental Tire North America (NA) has used Accelrys software to supplement and serve the R&D process. The molecular modeling group has had a profound impact on the success of several high-value projects within Continental Tire NA. Michael York, a Chemist who has been with Continental for over 20 years, comments:

"There are ongoing Continental Tire NA projects which employ molecular modeling to secure a competitive edge in the market place. One project involves bonding magnetic material into the sidewall of a tire, which produces a magnetic field for measuring wheel speed, brake torque, and lateral force. Metal does not naturally bond to rubber, therefore, a new type of coupling agent had to be designed. Computational chemistry was used to design a material with high affinity and specificity for the magnetic compound. The results were outstanding."

"The release of Materials Studio 2.2 brings powerful tools within easy reach of scientists and engineers. The potential of these applications to improve the process of materials design is immense," said John Delli Santi, vice president and general manager, Materials Science with Accelrys. "Continental Tire NA is a fine example of how Accelrys' Materials Studio can be used to enhance the R&D process."

Patented Technology

SmartConnex Makes Vibratory Feeders Most Accurate Ever

PITMAN, NJ (October 1, 2002) -- K-Tron has introduced a complete line of enhanced loss-in-weight vibratory feeders that offer the most accurate feeding ever attained by this type of device. The vibratory drive uses a patented resonant frequency technology that assures more precise control of material flow.

Click hereIn combination with Smart Force Transducer weighing and SmartConnex control technology, K-Tron's vibratory loss-in-weight feeders now offer a higher level of feeding accuracy, over a wider feed rate range, than previously attainable by a vibratory device. Model KV2 can feed from 0.07 to 88 cubic feet/ hour and model KV3can feed from 1.2 to 300 cubic feet/hour, based on vibratory tray size and adjustments.

The enhanced electronic control system provides a quick response to changing feed and environmental conditions. It also offers improved pert detection and self-tuning and features easier to use operator parameters.

K-Tron is a global leader in high-quality feeders, pneumatic conveying systems and related process equipment and services.  Headquartered in Pitman, New Jersey USA, K-Tron has more than 375 employees in the United States, Europe and Asia. It is further represented by about 80 sales organizations with 100 offices in 60 countries around the world.

Double Sealed

New Discharger Provides Hygienic Solution For IBCs

ROCK HILL, SC--- ISL Cone Valve Technology, a manufacturer of powder handling equipment, introduces its IBC (intermediate bulk container) system to safely and hygienically discharge material into processes such as mixing, packaging, screening and conveying. The discharge can be accurately controlled for rate or batch.

The system includes an ISL Discharge Station and one or more IBCs fitted with an ISL Cone Valve. The ISL Cone Valve is double sealed to prevent tipping or leaking during transport and can be easily secured for tumble blending. IBCs are available in various sizes constructed in stainless steel or polyethylene for pharmaceutical, food and chemical applications.

The dust tight seal on the discharge station isolates the operator and environment from process contamination and is maintained during the IBC loading or unloading. Only low-pressure plant air supply is required to lift the valve into the IBC creating an annulus aperture for material to flow without segregating or bridging. The lift height can be continuously controlled or adjusted for desired flow rates. Frequency and amplitude also can be controlled or adjusted to accommodate all types of materials. The discharge station can be dismantled by one operator without tools, cleaned and reassembled in minutes.

About ISL Cone Valve

ISL Cone Valve is an international manufacturer of powder handling equipment with offices in North America, Europe and Asia. The company, founded by Ivan Semenenko, manufactures a variety of Cone Valve equipment and accompanying products such as discharge frames, hopper stations and flow aids.

Mr. Pearson needs help with pneumatic conveying:

Does anyone have experience placing fire dampers in pneumatic material conveying systems?  I cannot find a unit that appears suitable.

We convey solid fabric pneumatically (an edge trim system) and loose fibers in a separate system.  These systems pass through fire walls.  Standard fire dampers seem like they will be a constant source of headaches.
