New Feeder Technology, Simple and Elegant
------------------------------------------------------------

With a single moving part, the Posimetric Feeder offers a
truly elegant solution to bulk feeding problems, by providing
exceptional accurate feeding.

Compared with a belt, paddle or vibratory feeder, which cannot
assure positive displacement of feed material, the Posimetric
responds linearly to a change in demand (that is, a 5%
increase in desired feed results in a 5% increase in actual
feed rate!). This is accomplished with a one-time calibration.

The feeder is flexible and will feed the most difficult solids-
especially those that are extremely sticky or abrasive. There
are no flights or vanes to adhere to the feed material, so the
feeder is self-cleaning.

Near-Zero Maintenance. Due to extremely slow operating speeds,
even the most abrasive materials will not cause wear. No
existing feeder component has ever been replaced (or shown
any wear, for that matter!)

Reliability. Since Posimetric Feeder components cannot fail
catastrophically, and the feeder is virtually incapable of
plugging, feed-related process interruptions are eliminated.

How It Works:

Bulk solid materials will bridge over a particular span. This
universal fact, which is to blame for many feed disruptions,
is actually the operating principle behind the Posimetric
Feeder. Material simply bridges between two disks, and moves
with them as the machine turns. When the material finds an
opening, it simply falls out into the downstream process.

This bridging, or lock-up, means that the feed material does
not move relative to the rotating disks, so abrasion is
eliminated.

Editor's Note: I was given a demonstration of this feeder
at the Powder Show and the design is really different than
other feeders. It works especially well for materials that
bridge and cause problems in conventional feeders. The
"bridging principle" is actually what makes this feeder work!

Engineered Solutions For the 'Heart' of Food Processing
------------------------------------------------------------

For the growing number of processors who must integrate bulk
material handling into their operations, K-Tron America now
offers engineered, turnkey solutions that can save you time
and money, and increase your productivity.

From vacuum conveyors to feeders, K-Tron can be your single
source provider for custom-engineered material handling systems,
including control integration into your plantwide supervisory
system. K-Tron offers application-specific expertise and can
provide everything from mobile, skid-mounted systems to complex
installations with multi-stream conveying and feeding.

Feeders perform a small but crucial function in processing
materials into products of higher value. It has been estimated
that on average feeders might account for 15 percent of the
equipment cost of a new plant. But it is an essential 15
percent-the heart that feeds the lifeblood, you might say,
to the world's process industries. Many processes simply could
not function without the reliable, predictable, consistent flow
of materials.

Large-Hopper Sugar Extractor Installed in Chile
------------------------------------------------------------

One of STARVRAC’s largest units - a Rotodome – has been
installed into a dome of 60,000 t in Chile, 250 km (150 miles)
south from Santiago.

The diameter of the dome is 54m (177 ft). This installation has
been made in July 99. This equipment is made of a frame with
an open tubular structure which supports an Archimedes screw.
The movement of this screw is made by one drive unit which is
installed in a tight casing located in the silo center.

The screw collects the residue of sugar and discharges it with
an output capacity of 100 t/h. A second unit also placed inside
a tight casing, situated on the opposite side of the structure,
drives radially the equipment through a ring-shaped rack fixed
on the ground near the silo wall.

This independent and automatic system is totally secure, needs
no human handling, and allows considerable savings on operation
costs.

Starvrac, an industrial French company, designs, manufactures
and installs a wide range of rotary screw reclaiming systems for
silos and domes. Starvrac has opened a subsidiary in Montreal,
Canada last year.

Starvrac bin unloaders deliver outstanding results in bulk material
installations around the world. Planétaire, Symétrix and Hydrovrac
work within material mass to empty flat bottomed silos by the
rotating and the sweeping movement of a tapered screw. This range
of unloaders works in silos up to 30m (100ft) in diameter with
extraction outputs up to 400tph and is suitable for materials as
diverse as sugar, plaster, cement, coal, petroleum coke, gypsum,
household refuse, fly ash, mud and wood waste, grain, meals,
soybean, etc.…

Since 35 years more than 4,000 systems have been already installed
around the world.

Mr. Miller wants to test flowability:

Does anybody know of a company that will make up simulate powders
to trial powder handling equipment? We have limited quantities
of active material that we could test to determine flowability
from which we would like to develop simulate powder for equipment
trials.
