Dr. John Carson Receives IMechE
Solids Handling Award
Glasgow,
Scotland -- In recognition for his contribution to bulk
solids handling technology, Dr John Carson, President of
Jenike & Johanson, Inc, the international solids handling
consulting engineering firm, is the recipient of this year's
Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Solids Handling
Award.
Sponsored by solids handling
equipment specialist Ajax Equipment, the award was presented
to Dr Carson at the recent 7th World Congress of Chemical
Engineering hosted in Glasgow by the Institution of Chemical
Engineers. This award was made in recognition of Dr Carson's
many contributions to solids handling technology, membership
of various technical and standards committees and his
extensive work in technical education in the subject.
In presenting the award, Lyn
Bates, managing director, Ajax Equipment, paid tribute to Dr
Carson's contribution to solids handling. "Bulk solids
technology is a complex subject where the factors involved
in processing particulate solids from a pharmaceutical pill
to a million tonne stockpile call for professional
specialists of a high order capable of blending science with
experience and innovation. Dr John Carson has all these
qualities", he said. "His technical contributions in this
field have been matched by a lifelong commitment to
educating engineers in the complexities of solids handling."
Dr John Carson has over 35 years
experience of working in the solids handling industry,
specializing in bin loads - loads applied to storage
vessels, particle segregation and fine powder processing. As
President of Jenike & Johanson for the past 20 years he has
overseen the company's growth from one to four offices
across North America and Chile.
Dr Carson thanked the Institution
of Mechanical Engineers for the award. "I am delighted to
receive this award. Much has changed since I began working
in the bulk solids industry. Yet there is a greater need
than ever for specialists in bulk handling where academic
knowledge is no substitute for practical experience.
Advances in chemical and materials engineering in the
process industries have led to increasing use of materials
with highly unusually flow characteristics and exceptionally
low bulk density, making knowledge of powder flow as
relevant today as when I first entered the profession."

Conveyor Industry Sees Continued
Growth in First Half of 2005
NAPLES,
FL -- The Conveyor Equipment Manufacturers Association
(CEMA) reports that overall booked sales (new orders) for
the first 6 months of 2005 increased 8.8% compared to the
same period in 2004, with total new orders of $2.6 billion.
CEMA estimates industry shipments of $2.5 billion in the
same period.
In the
Bulk Conveying area, Screw Conveyors were strong with
bookings up 18% and shipments up 24%. Bulk Equipment was
also strong with bookings up 30% and shipments up 18%.
Orders for Bulk Accessories were up 17% and shipments 14%.
Unit Handling Systems were strong with overall bookings up
almost 14%, Tow Conveyors up 67%, and Conveyor Chain up 16%.
The
executives representing CEMA member companies who attended
the fall meeting felt confident that new equipment orders
and shipments would continue growing for the rest of 2005.
CEMA President, Jim Lamb announced the results at the
Association’s Fall meeting in Chicago, Illinois, in
September.
CEMA
tracks new orders and shipped sales volume in seven classes
of unit handling equipment and five classes of bulk handling
equipment. The graph shown plots the monthly order and sales
trends reported by CEMA member companies from July 2003
through June 2005. Trends are graphed for Total CEMA
members. An electronic version of this document and graphs
is located on the CEMA web site at
www.cemanet.org/press/semi.html
CEMA
published the all new 6th Edition of “The Belt Book” – Belt
Conveyors for Bulk Materials in April of 2005; this valuable
engineering resource can be purchased from the CEMA Store
at:
www.cemanet.org/ecommerce. This book is the
authoritative technical manual for bulk belt conveyor design
worldwide. CEMA also makes available safety labels for all
types of conveyor equipment as well as useful technical
information and manuals.

MegaShear Increases Shear and
Flow, All in One Pass
Hauppauge,
NY -- The MegaShear represents an ingenious step forward. It
is a hybrid rotor/stator mixer the first to combine, high
flow rates: up to 500 gpm without an auxiliary pump,
extremely high tip speeds: over 11,000 fpm and ultra-high
shear.
The
combination of high flow and high shear is an important
improvement over previous rotor/stator designs, because
gains in throughput can produce direct gains in overall
production, operating efficiency, and bottom-line
profitability. Even for those who are already using an
ultra-high shear rotor/stator mixer to produce sub-micron
emulsions and dispersions, the MegaShear offers many
manufacturers a tool to produce more end-product, faster.
But
perhaps the most significant advantage that the MegaShear
offers is its ability to disintegrate large particles and
droplets in a single pass. With virtually 100%
particle/droplet disintegration on the first pass, the
MegaShear produces an exceptionally uniform particle/droplet
size distribution ? which is critically important for many
fine emulsions and dispersions. A extremely narrow size
distribution contributes to superior product stability and
texture, faster solubilization, greater efficacy in the case
of pharmaceuticals, and greater efficiency for catalyzed
chemical reactions.
The
MegaShear is especially well-suited for applications that
include high-quality chemical dispersions, emulsions,
suspensions and solutions. Food applications include
condiments, sauces, dressings and marinades.

New : Revolutionary Valve Reduces Change-Over Time
Middlesex,
NJ -- The Gemco Sani Valve® has been specifically
designed for operations which need to control powders or
slurries and are subject to USDA and FDA requirements.
All keyways, threads, and
crevices that might slow down cleaning because of
concern for cross-contamination contamination have been
eliminated. GMP guidelines for cleaning inspection are
easily accomplished.
The valve comes apart such
that every surface is visible. Gemco even eliminated the
need for screws to hold the valve together. Our patent
pending design uses standard clamps. The standard Sani
Valve is 316L with #4 polish with tri clamp end
connections for dust tight applications.
As always, Gemco offer a wide
range of options such as flanged or weld neck
connections and a range of finishes and automation
choices including metering and double dump arrangements.

Mr. Hoisingon needs to unload
super sacks:
I am looking for equipment
and super sack supplier to unload hazardous waste from super
sacks.
Solids will range from very
hard very dry 2"-minus chunks/powder to processed petroleum
tank bottoms. Petroleum tank bottoms processed to varying
degrees by filter press, centrifuge, and belt press.
Consistency will be from dry
crumbly solids to moist/wet solids having more or less the
consistency of raw ground beef. (to post reply, click here)

Mr. Coolidge needs to replace
his bootlift:
I need to replace my
bootlift, but don't know of any manufacturers besides Martin
Engineering. I'm not thrilled with the cable stabilization
system they use, or with the air over hydraulic system.
I have only found one other
company who manufactures bootlifts, but would like to have
some options before I make a decision. Anybody know of
any?
