Metso to supply Rotary Railcar
Unloaders
Helsinki, Finland -- Metso will supply two twin-cell rotary
railcar unloader systems to Pilbara Infrastructure Pty Ltd,
a subsidiary of Fortescue Metals Group Ltd (FMG) for its
Anderson Point site in the Pilbara region of Western
Australia.

The
value of the order is approximately EUR 39 million and it
will be included Metso Minerals’ Q3 orders received. Both
deliveries will be completed in Q4, 2009.
Each
unloader system consists of a train indexer, train locks and
a twin-cell rotary railcar unloader. The order also
comprises engineering, design and start-up assistance of the
unloader systems. The unloader systems are capable of
unloading trains at a rate of 80 wagons per hour each. This
translates into an unloading rate of approximately 10,800
tonnes per hour per system.
Metso’s solution will be used at Anderson Point to unload
trains from iron ore coming from both FMG’s Cloudbreak and
Christmas Creek mines.
Fortescue Metals Group Limited is an Australian iron ore
producer.
Metso
is a global engineering and technology corporation with 2007
net sales of over EUR 6 billion. Its over 27,000 employees
in approximately 50 countries serve customers in the pulp
and paper industry, rock and minerals processing, the energy
industry and selected other industries.

New Software simplifies Hopper
Design
Welland,
UK -- New software for the FT4 Powder Rheometer, the
universal powder tester from Freeman Technology, demystifies
hopper design, guiding the user step-by-step through powder
measurement, data analysis and equipment specification.
Relevant to a broad range of industries, the new software
provides a cost- and time-effective solution for hopper and
bin specification.
The
fully automated FT4 measures all the parameters required for
hopper design with unprecedented precision. The software
determines critical hopper parameters from this data using
well-established design methodologies. A testing and design
cycle is typically complete in around two hours.
Achieving mass flow, the preferred operating regime, within
a bin or hopper depends on the correct specification of
outlet size and hopper half angle. These parameters are
calculated from measurements of shear cell, wall friction
and bulk density. The widely used design methodologies were
developed several decades ago and have proven extremely
successful. However, measuring powders and interpreting the
data in the required way, has, until now, largely been seen
as an ‘expert’ task.
Thanks
to extensive development, over many years, the FT4 has
evolved from a powder rheometer into a universal powder
tester offering shear, bulk and dynamic measurement.
Unsurpassed reproducibility gives the instrument excellent
sensitivity for all parameters. It is used across a wide
range of industrial sectors for developmental work, QC and
troubleshooting/optimization studies.

First "Snake" Ship Loader installed in Australia
Marietta, GA -- Australia’s
first Snake Ship Loader by Dos Santos International
elevates a variety of high value ores from trucks to
ship. Materials for export are trucked to the dock and
dumped onto a special trap loader type feeder. The ore
is fed continuously and uniformly onto the mobile
snake’s receiving chute.

The Snake Ship Loader
elevates the bulk over the ship’s deck to the hatch
where it is discharged into the ship’s hold. At the
Snake’s discharge, a special telescoping chute, with
rotating, pivoting spoon, facilitates even and complete
filling of the holds.
The mobile Snake is carried
on a tripod of twin motorized rubber tires. Each set of
twin tires is mounted at a vertical kingpin and can
rotate 360 degrees about that vertical axis. Thus,
without repositioning, the Snake can set up to travel in
any direction. With the tail tires fixed, the front
tires can be oriented and traveled for a slewing motion.
The DSI Snake Shiploader
elevates a variety of ores almost 22m (71.5ft) at rates
to 1000 t/h (1102 STPH). The two 1200mm (48in) belts run
at speeds up to 2 m/s (394 FPM), and are powered by two
55kW (74 HP) motors.
Dos Santos International was
founded in 1997 on the experience and accomplishments of
its name sake, Joseph A. Dos Santos. Recognized as a
high tech leader in materials handling and engineering,
DSI approaches the future with optimism and confidence.

Mr. Wradnski needs help
identifying a screening device:
This
is used to screen rocks out of bulk powder deliveries. I'm
trying to locate the manufacturer, or the manufacturer of a
similar device. Does this look familiar to anyone?

Dr. Campbell needs help with
flow and shear calcs:
I
would really appreciate it if someone could help me by
pointing me in the right direction. I wish to know how to
calculating the shear stress / rate and flow dynamics of a
conical hopper with a rotary screw to feed.
These systems are used on our
high throughput robotic synthesis and formulation platforms
and I am trying to expand our predictive dispensing
optimization software for liquids, viscous liquids and
solids. (see attached photo)
If someone could be so kind
to give us a reference to the correct testing / measurement
method and equations for calculation it could really help me
out as flow dynamics is not my strong point.
