Batching : Automated Powder
System Produces Exceptional Consistency
Cincinnati,
OH -- Ingredient Masters, Inc. a manufacturer of custom
material handling systems for ingredients used in the food/
beverage, pharmaceutical, chemical and ceramic industries,
has introduced a family of batching systems for the
efficient management of dry bulk, powdered, flaked and
granular ingredients.
These
automated powder batching systems are distinctive in several
ways. First, the USDA polyethylene dispensers are round,
with sides sloping to a shear wall drop. This design feature
prevents the "bridging" effect, which is common in powder
processing, and which complicates material flow.
The
dispenser design has integral, centralized dust collection,
but is designed to substantially reduce the generation of
airborne dusts.
Systems incorporate the use of Super Sacks for incoming raw
material. These polypropylene sacks hold up to 3000 lbs. of
material, require less storage space and simplify issues of
dunnage and landfilling. Super Sacks are mounted to a
patented frame developed by Ingredient Masters and
fork-lifted to the dispenser. This eliminates the injury
risk and the time constraints of manual handling.
A
rail-mounted scale cart, robotic device or AGV moves between
dispensers; material is discharged into the cart through
stainless steel pneumatic slide gates, according to the
programmed recipe. Various vibratory devices can be used to
assure optimum flow rate.
Load
cells mounted on the vehicle are one of several ways the
system assures exceptionally high batch accuracy. Ingredient
Masters automated batching systems are PLC controlled; a
graphic interface provides detailed overviews of system
operation, ingredient usage and ingredient inventories, and
tracks incoming lot numbers.
When
a batch cycle is complete, the PLC produces a batch record
that includes all ingredients and their respective weights,
and assigns a batch lot number. Batch record data can be set
to download automatically into a separate database. Material
usage by day, week or month can be determined and protocols
that allow operators to queue batches in a sequence, a week
at a time, can be included.
Ingredient Masters automated batching systems use
off-the-shelf hardware and software to prevent issues with
proprietary equipment and platforms, and facilitate easy
maintenance. Scales, conveyors and specialized product
transfer equipment can be provided. Ingredient Masters
turnkey systems are ISO compliant.

Food Processing : Matcon to Exhibit
"Parallel Processing" Technology
Sewell,
NJ -- Matcon USA, Inc. will be exhibiting at the Food
Processing Machinery Expo in Chicago, November 7 - 11,
2004 at McCormick Place. Let Matcon show you how "Parallel
Processing" can improve your operations.
Stop by to learn how Matcon's
"Parallel Processing" technology can make your mixing and
packing more efficient. You can achieve optimum process
efficiency with our "In Bin" Formulation and Blending.
This new batch processing
technology maintains complete batch integrity, instant
product change over, limited need for external dust
control and complete protection against the unwanted
migration of allergenic materials. All this can be
achieved using a rigid IBCs direct formulation system, IBC
blending and cone valve technology. Directly formulating
and blending in this process can be done in an enclosed
system, dust free and automatically.
The Matcon IBC System offers
proven and reliable solutions to overcome traditional
solids handling problems by providing controlled flow,
avoiding segregation or degradation, promoting mass flow
and fast batch transfers.
Experienced Matcon Sales
Specialists will be on-hand to explain the technology and
discuss how it can work for your specific application.

Jason
wants to feed and hydrate sticky granules:
A question for the veterans
here. What would be a suitable method of mixing water with a
grain-based granular powder that will have a tendency to
become a viscous slurry? Would a simple mixed tank be
adequate if the tank was filled with water and then fed with
the grain?
It would seem that a mixing
auger approach would be risky due to starch pasting and
agglomeration. I know this is a fairly open-ended question,
but any comments that you might have would be well
appreciated.

Elena needs
help measuring flow of abrasive solids:
My company
requires an online method to determine mass flow through its
venturi pump systems. The measurement would enable us to
deploy its extraction systems much more effectively. In
particular an on-line monitor would enable us to identify
when the extraction of particulate from tanks nears
completion.
The development
of the monitor however is non-trivial as the extracted
particulate is often hot and highly abrasive. The
measurement based on back scattering of a beam of light from
particles doesn't work.
Can anybody help
me to find the most suitable method?

Blending : Agitator Seal Assembly Solves
Bearing Problems
Jos. H. Lowenstein Sons is in
the business of blending pigments for the hair dye
industry. Blending these ultra-fine pigment materials has
it’s own set of inherent problems- one of which is that
the micron-sized particles are difficult to keep out of
agitator bearing assemblies. “We had a terrible time
keeping the agitator bearings clear,” says Bill Thomas,
Lowenstein’s chief of maintenance. Agitators can cause an
internal build up of pressure ...(more)
