All Four Measures Expand

PMMI September Business Conditions Index Grows

ARLINGTON, Va., Oct. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- According to the Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Institute's Business Conditions Index (BCI), the packaging machinery sector grew in September, with each of the four measures indicating expansion. It is the first time since the May report that all four measurements show expansion.

General Business Conditions increased to 54.6, up 0.3 from last month. New orders for machinery increased by 2.8 points to 54.6. Quotations for packaging equipment dropped 5.1 points, but closed at 54.0, within expansion parameters. Shipments increased 5.5 points to move to 52.

An index of more than 50 indicates an expansion in the period and an index below 50 indicates a slowdown in activity. The September BCI tabulates the input of approximately 125 of PMMI's 500 PMMI member companies. The BCI is based on PMMI's "How's Business" survey, a weekly poll of member companies.

PMMI's Business Conditions Index (BCI) collects data on four business indicators: general business conditions, new orders, shipments and quotations/proposal activity on a weekly basis.

"This is the first time since the May Business Conditions Index that all four measures point to expansion within the packaging machinery sector," comments Charles D. Yuska, president of PMMI. "PMMI is cautiously optimistic that many consumer and industrial goods companies are looking to increase productivity through the purchase of new capital goods."

Packaging machinery sales, quotation activity, new orders as well as general business conditions are leading indicators for consumer goods companies' consumer confidence. If consumer products companies believe that demand will weaken, they tend to not invest in new capital equipment. If, however, they feel demand will pick up, they tend to invest in machinery that will bring their products to market quickly and efficiently.

The Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Institute (PMMI) is a trade association whose 500 members manufacture packaging and packaging-related converting machinery in the United States and Canada. For more information on PMMI, visit http://www.pmmi.org/ .

Features a Cutter Blade Wiper

Eriez Cross Belt Sampler Success

The addition of Birtley cross belt sampling technology to the Eriez-Europe product portfolio in early 2000 has been signaled as a major success in the coal and power generation industries. Orders have been placed by new and existing clients in UK and export markets.

Click hereOne of the more recent orders was from existing customer Burrows Brothers (Sales) Ltd for installation on a mobile conveyor for operation at their Moorhouse Coal and Fireclay site, nr Wakefield (UK). The Cross Belt Sampler will be taking a representative sample of coal from a moving conveyor belt and discharge this to the side of the conveyor into a collection chute.

The Eriez Cross Belt Sampler was chosen because of its ease of installation, particularly within a mobile plant, and its cost effectiveness to operate and maintain relative to the importance of its role in monitoring the quality of the conveyed coal. Site operators will use this sampling technology to verify that quality parameters and customer standards are being met.

The Sampler features an uncomplicated design that features a cutter blade wiper which moves in one direction only and a cam activated limit switch to regulate the speed and stopping positions of the cutter. The sample cutter is of stainless steel construction and comprises parallel side plates and a back plate positioned to prevent material being retained inside the cutter at the discharge point. The speed of the cutter is always in excess of the conveyor belt speed but will be set to suit the individual location.

The Eriez Cross Belt Sampler is suitable for most types of trough belt, including deep trough types. Installation is simple with minimal work required, particularly in retrofit installations. The Cross Belt Sampler is suitable for open and enclosed locations as well as mobile cross belt sampling.

Eriez cross belt and rotary sampling technology applies to plants handling particulate solids and slurries and can be supplied as individual units or as turnkey systems. The technology is simple, reliable and cost effective to maintain.

Integration

Expansion of GEA Filtration in Europe

Following the successful integration of the different GEA membrane filtration business units into one organization - GEA Filtration are proud to announce the next phase of our growth plan for cross-flow membrane filtration.

Click hereThe European structure of GEA Filtration will be substantially expanded to cover the following market segments - dairy, food & beverage, biotech & pharmaceutical and process wastewater. The local GEA sales network will be expanded with dedicated GEA Filtration personnel.

Niels E. Olsen has been appointed Division Manager, responsible for the complete GEA Filtration organization in Europe. He comes with 11 years of experience within GEA and has successfully held various management positions in Southeast Asia, China, and the USA.

The existing GEA Filtration division of GEA Liquid Processing Scandinavia A/S (Skanderborg, Denmark) will continue to handle the dairy, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. Additional investments will be made to expand the existing pilot plant fleet in Skanderborg. Other resources are scheduled to further build on the success obtained in the pharmaceutical and biotech industries. Strong synergies will be realized with the system supplies from the existing GEA process engineering divisions.

GEA Wiegand GmbH (Ettlingen, Germany) has established a new GEA Filtration division to cover the food, industrial and wastewater segments. A substantial investment is being made to enlarge GEA Wiegand's existing test facility to include membrane filtration and new staff with specific membrane filtration experience has been hired. The adding of the GEA Filtration division will compliment the existing thermal evaporation technology division of GEA Wiegand.

GEA has expertise in building systems for concentration, separation, and purification of process streams - these include: thermal evaporation; freeze concentration; and mechanical separation. The increased focus on membrane filtration reinforces GEA's technology leadership position in separation and concentration applications, and enhances the synergies obtained between the individual technologies and business units within GEA.

GEA Filtration in Hudson, WI, USA, will remain the worldwide center of excellence for all cross-flow membrane filtration activities.

GEA Filtration supplies Reverse Osmosis, Nanofiltration, Ultrafiltration and Microfiltration technology and systems to the worldwide market in the dairy, food, chemical, beverage, and pharmaceutical/biotech industries. Fully Illustrated

Handbook of Crushing - CD-ROM Edition - Available

Broomall, PA -- The Handbook Of Crushing, 2002 edition, is available for free on a CD-ROM. This fully illustrated, fully updated 42-page handbook provides an overview of mechanical reduction methods, a checklist of crusher selection criteria, and an application analysis guide to the specifications needed for crusher selection and sizing.

Unique in the industry, the Handbook Of Crushing is regarded as a basic reference on crushing among power plants, prep plants, mines, cement plants, process industries, quarries, and wherever minerals or other materials require size reduction.

It also includes chapters on crushing tests, how to take samples, an index of abrasiveness, definitions of material characteristics, power requirements, closed-circuit crushing, and crusher hammer technology.

Other sections describe all 26 crusher models and the Posimetric feeders offered by Pennsylvania Crusher, plus a pictorial tour of the firm's manufacturing and rebuild facilities, engineering, test lab, application engineering group and other departments.

Pennsylvania Crusher produces more types of crushers - and in more sizes - than any other manufacturer. The company has pioneered numerous innovations in crusher technology that are in wide use today. About half of the steam coal used in the US power generation industry is crushed by a Pennsylvania® crusher, and the firm's equipment is used worldwide.

Help Forum

Hot Messages from the Help Forum

People post their requests for help and offer their suggestions to others in our open forum.

Mr. McQueen wants a metal detector:

I am looking to install metal detection at the bottom of our hopper.

To do this we either have to:
a) Switch to a plastic auger a tube, and I am concerned about wear, and durability
b) Or keep our stainless steel auger, but free flow the substance through the metal detector.   Here the issue having the substance stick to the tubes, clump, etc.  So we would need something to help the substance flow down the pipe.

Any information on heavy duty/non-metallic augers, or fluidization systems for a tube ranging from 1-3.5"in diameter, and 12"-24" long would be fantastic.

Mr. Martin needs help cleaning out a sugar silo:

We have a 59-foot  by 12-foot in diameter bulk sugar silo with a vibrating Peabody bottom and china cap, dual screw feeder at the bottom. The sugar is transferred to a vacuum receiver. Capacity is 312,000 lb.  We continue to struggle with large buildups of sugar on walls, approximately three feet thick. A heal of 60,000 to 80,000 lb.

Over the past 8 years the silo has been cleaned out 3 times, removing the build up with a air operated whip from the top.

Our sugar supplier prevention plan to handle sugar and store sugar under ideal conditions: 70 degrees, 50% RH air, or handle with available air supply and use up sugar without allowing or creating drying and crystal bonding. This prevention plan hasn't been successful.

Two questions: How can we prevent buildup and any ideas on new clean out procedures using water, so we might recover sugar to be reconditioned by supplier?  (Click here to post a reply)

Don Martin
