On-Line Granulation Monitor That "Looks to See"
------------------------------------------------------------
Fuji Paudal has recently developed the so-called Image Eye
and Wet Eye to monitor the granulation in e.g. a fluid bed
granulator or mixer-granulator.
The Image Eye includes a scope that takes pictures of the
granulated product during the process. As granulation takes
place bigger granules are shown on the pictures. A CCD camera
is used to take the pictures of the growing granules on a
continuous basis . By means of a stroboscopic light, that
flashes every 0.2 to 1.2 seconds, the granules are viewable
on the video screen in the same frequency.
The video is linked to a computer system that translates the
pictures into data and show the particle size distribution
and growth in function of time.
The key principle of this technique is to separate the
background from the particles, and is based on the standard
grayscale. The computer decides if a pixel on the video
screen belongs to a particle when it is whiter than the
default grayscale value. If the pixel is darker the computer
considers the pixel as background.
By using four (4) different algorithms to calculate particle
surface, a volume and thus particle size is calculated.
The main advantage of this system is the ability to monitor
the growing particle size on-line. This allows the operator
to optimize the use of the granulator without unnecessary
extended process time in the fluid bed granulator.
Another advantage is that the operator van intervene during
the process, based on what the Image eye monitors.
For pharmaceutical applications the Image Eye can be used
to determine the final point of granulation, and is thus a
perfect tool for process validation.
Another development is the so-called Wet Eye, which is used
in combination with the Image Eye. The Wet Eye monitors the
humidity of the granule by NIR (Near Infra-Red) measurement.

Laboratory Pelletizing System
------------------------------------------------------------
Galas LPU Laboratory Pelletizing System, a true lab-scale
pelletizing system, is specifically designed for laboratory
product developmental work and market sampling. The Laboratory
Pelletizing System is designed for production rates from 20
to 150 pounds per hour, (9-70 kg/h). This system is suitable
for pelletizing HMA, PS, ABS, PA, filled polyolefins, flexible
and rigid PVC, and many other polymers.
The Laboratory Pelletizing Systems underwater pelletizer is
a compact version of Galas standard patented spring-loaded
cutter (SLC), with patented self-aligning cutter hub assembly
supplied as a standard feature.
The centrifugal pellet dryer and tempered water system design
incorporates several unique features to enhance the
attractiveness of this small system for laboratory use;
some of its advantages are -
-Easy to clean
-Requires few, inexpensive, replacement parts
-Simple and easy to operate
-Lightweight and portable
-Designed to duplicate the actual production scenario of
the Gala Underwater Pelletizing principles
The system includes a spring-loaded underwater pelletizer,
tempered water system, new and redesigned centrifugal pellet
dryer - all mounted on a single chassis with swivel casters.
All necessary electrical controls are contained in a simple
freestanding panel.

25,000 U.S. Companies Have It - Few People Know What It Is
------------------------------------------------------------
October 6,1999 (INB) -- U.S. companies are increasingly
recognizing the need to establish ISO 9000 systems. At
present, approximately 1 in 500 U.S. businesses are
registered to ISO 9000. The lengthy list is comprised of
many well-known national firms. It includes Ford Motor
Company, AT&T, Hewlett-Packard, Alcoa, and Federal Express
as well as numerous medium to small enterprises.
Surprisingly, the majority of people do not know what ISO
is, much less that these companies have achieved
registration.
ISO 9000 is a management system designed to help companies
produce consistent products and services. There are over
25,000 U.S. companies, and over 270,000 companies worldwide
registered to ISO. Some companies will only do business with
firms that are ISO registered. ISO registration has also
become a requirement for many government contracts. ISO is
the only international standard in the marketplace today.
As ISO has become more popular, many companies have attained
ISO 9000 registration for cost savings and prestige.
According to a survey conducted in conjunction with Dun &
Bradstreet, cost savings range from thousands of dollars per
year to several hundred thousand dollars per year.
Companies often spend thousands to millions of dollars to
become registered. Registration to ISO 9000 is evidence that
these companies are committed to increasing quality,
reducing costs and providing a better product or service.
ISORegistered.com <http://www.ISORegistered.com> was created
to provide valuable information to quality professionals and
build public awareness about ISO. It is the only worldwide
directory specifically designed and developed to help
registered companies promote their registration, products
and services and to provide a one-stop information resource
on ISO and related standards.
Marci Stell, Marketing Manager for ISORegistered.com, Inc.,
explains ISORegistered.com's main goals: "Our objective is
to contribute timely, useful information about ISO-related
news, as well as guidance to quality professionals on a
constant basis. On even terms, we strive to provide
registered firms with the most highly promoted low-cost
method for marketing their certification, products and
services."
ISORegistered.com can be viewed on the Internet at:
