Brabender : New Bulk Bag Emptying and Packaging Station

Mississauga, Ontario -- FlavorChem has developed flavor mixtures as toppings for snack foods. In the manufacturing process, flavor mixes are transferred to a bulk bag for further packaging into plastic lined drums and bags.

Brabender Technologie worked with FlavorChem to design a bulk bag emptying and packaging station. A FlexWall Loss in Weight feeder is used to fill the packages accurately to the package weight. Loss In Weight was preferred so that the package can be vibrated during batching to ensure a compact fill.

Brabender Technologie offers a complete line of volumetric and loss-in-weight feeders with controls. Volumetric feeders include FlexWall line up to 6-in. screw diameter, as well as all stainless steel single and twin-screw models. LIW feeders feature the type H suspended scale, DigiMass-2 for ultra-high digital accuracy and single and multiple feeder controllers.

Tablet Press : Containment System Meets Stringent Safety Standards

ROCKAWAY, NJ -- Fette, a leading manufacturer and supplier of tablet presses for both pharmaceutical and industrial applications, now offers Fette ABSOLUT filtration/containment systems that set a new standard in the containment and removal of active compound and toxic product dust during industrial and pharmaceutical production, it was announced by Rich Derickson, Vice President of Sales & Operations for Fette America.

According to Mr. Derickson, the Fette ABSOLUT system can filter extremely fine dust particles and aerosols, bringing pharmaceutical processing contamination levels down well below the most stringent OEL (Occupational Exposure Limit). Based on a proven design initially developed and utilized in the nuclear industry, the system provides an extremely low airborne dust level during handling via the use of two HEPA filters which allow cleaned air to be reintroduced back into the production area with no impact on room-to-hallway air balancing.

The Fette ABSOLUT system features the exclusive use of sub-micron particulate filter cassettes in both the active filter and safety filter stages, affording the ability to accept high levels of contaminants in the inlet air stream; guaranteed 24-hour system operation; the ability to dedust different tablet presses with one filter system without product cross contamination; and integrated weighing systems to provide records of the quantities that have been extracted.

Fette America is a direct extension of Fette GmbH of Schwarzenbek, Germany, one of the first companies to develop and perfect the rotary tablet press. With unmatched service and support, Fette America offers complete services to Fette clients in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico, including new and used machine sales, technical assistance, machine installations, training classes and seminars, validation, maintenance, trouble-shooting and repairs, spare parts, and tooling.

Cement : Inbulk Technologies Secures Supply Contract From Lafarge

East Kilbride, Scotland -- InBulk Technologies announces that Lafarge Cement UK has chosen the ISO-Veyor as the key element in a new supply chain for a cement additive.

A number of the innovative self discharging ISO-Veyors will be deployed within the supply chain, which includes a short sea journey to Southampton and then via road to the Cement Works.

Key factors in Lafarge’s decision to utilize the ISO-Veyor concept, were its ability to be transported by sea and by road and guaranteed security of the product during transit. The ISO-Veyor will discharge the product directly into the process silo whilst in the horizontal position (no tilting equipment required - a Health & Safety issue), the ISO-Veyor can be used to provide additional storage if and when necessary and the number of ISO-Veyors in the supply chain can easily be adapted to meet any changes in demand.

Bill Thomson, CEO of InBulk explains, “This contract is a significant step for InBulk Technologies. We have succeeded in providing Lafarge Cement with sound economic and environmental reasons to choose our new equipment over existing technology. We have shown that intermodal solutions can be adopted without difficulty. We hope that this contract is the beginning of a long relationship between InBulk Technologies and Lafarge Cement and reflects just one of many other interesting opportunities developing for InBulk Technologies”.

Help Forum : Hot Messages from the Help Forum

Mr. Sproule needs help with perlite segregation:

We have a conical storage silo 8' dia, 20' vertical sides and a 50 degree cone. We fill an expanded perlite product from the top by gravity.

Our material is very light approx 3.4 lbs cu ft. and it has particle sizes ranging from 50 mesh to 200 mesh. We seem to be getting a lot of vertical segregation because the first material out is very heavy/coarse and the last material out is very light/fine and fluffy.

We are looking for a way to eliminate this vertical segregation. Can anyone help?

Mr. Oexeman needs help with pneumatic conveying:

We are providing layout work for a dilute phase pneumatic conveying system to carry quicklime fines from 3 kilns. The quicklime will be screened after exiting the kilns. The temp of the quicklime fines will be about 250 C. The density of the quicklime fines is about 50 pounds per cubic foot.

We want to use one conveying line to pick-up the fines. The 3 kilns are in a straight row, on 60 foot centers. The carrying pipe will be a nominal 6 inch. The flow velocity will be about 5000 feet per minute.

We will put a rotary airlock on the pipe at each load point, with a vent to handle any carry-over air from the conveying system.

The conveying rate from each kiln screen for fines is 6666 pound per hour, for a total from the three at 20,000 pounds per hour.

Can we simultaneously pick up from the 3 points (each feeding 6666 lb/hr), or do we need to stagger the feed times by putting a surge hopper with level controls between the screen and rotary airlock, and each feeding then 20,000 pounds per hour on their cycle?

Gemco Case Study : Double Actuators Solves Valve-Jamming Problem

Jim Shirley was in a bit of a bind in more ways than one. As General Manager of Aqua Sol, a manufacturer of metal starches for the textiles dyes industry in Pineville, NC, Mr. Shirley was having difficulties in production with his Plug Valves.  The material, as it goes through the process, is pasty and gooey in consistency, which is tough on most valves but as it dries it turns to a solid mass, making it a very difficult application....(more)
