World Batch Forum's European 2002 Conference

World Batch Forum will hold its second European Conference this October near Brussels, Belgium, October 14-16, 2002. The conference kicks off on the afternoon of Monday, October 14th with tutorial sessions on S88 (Batch Models & Terminology) and S95 (Enterprise - Control System Integration). Each 2 hour tutorial runs twice so delegates can attend both.

Click hereOn Tuesday the conference keynote address by Alain Cruset of ISPE sets the scene for the first session; Pharmaceutical Industry. Tuesday also features presentations on Enterprise - Control System Integration and Project Execution. Wednesday features presentations on Batch Design & Standards and Case Studies.

During the conference a table top exhibition featuring technologies from WBF sponsor companies will give delegates the opportunity to see the latest developments in the field. It's expected that many vendors will be keen to show their latest moves in the Enterprise - Control System Integration area following the release of the WBF's XML Schemas earlier this year.

With presentations from a wide range of companies (including Novo Nordisk, Yokogawa, Millennium Specialty Chemicals, Procter & Gamble) from countries across Europe (including France, Germany, Israel, UK, Hungary, Belgium) this second WBF European Conference is set to be the premier 2002 event for engineering professionals working in the batch control arena.

You can register on the website: www.wbf.org.

Raise or Lower Without Special Tools

New LeverMount Reduces Process Weighing Downtime

East Peoria, IL - No one likes downtime. Production is behind time and frantic, and you just found out that the batch weigher is weighing heavy. Maybe the clean-up crew spent a little too much time with their high-pressure sprayer cleaning around a load cell.

Click hereTraditionally the only way to change out a load cell on a tank weighing system was to jack up the tank, block up the tank, replace the load cell and gently lower that tank back down. Hopefully the tank was empty, if not you had to find another tank to move the contents. After the job was completed you had to start all over again.

4B introduces a breakthrough in process weighing applications.  LeverMount improves process safety and reduces downtime by being able to raise or lower a vessel while under load without special tools. Replacing a load cell is now a one-man job and can be accomplished quickly without jacks & blocks. This reduces the risk of rupturing a vessel and injury to workers.

With substantial lift off prevention, stable three-point mounting, steel work misalignment tolerant, and all stainless steel construction, the LeverMount is a great choice for mount assemblies.

Dump Truck & Trailer Liners

Aero Signs Distribution Agreement With Poly Hi Solidur

INDIANAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 16, 2002--Aero Industries, Inc., the nation's leading manufacturer of tarping systems and accessories for the transportation industry, has reached a national distribution agreement with Poly Hi Solidur.

Click hereAccording to the agreement, Aero will now offer Poly Hi Solidur's QuickSilver and DuraPro on-road dump trucks and dump trailer liners across North America.

Both corporations are recognized leaders in product quality, support and development for the transportation industry. According to Dave Boyd, Chief Operating Officer of Aero Industries, Inc. "that made for a natural synergy between our two companies. As a leader in cargo protection products, we saw an opportunity to create a partnership in dump liners. The dump liners now compliment and complete our product offering for dump trucks and dump trailers."

Aero chose to work with Poly Hi Solidur, because based on Aero's extensive market research, the QuickSilver and DuraPro dump liners were clearly perceived as the industry's best. According to Boyd "it quickly became obvious that QuickSilver and DuraPro were the brands everyone wanted."

As part of the agreement, Aero Industries will also offer Poly Hi Solidur's entire line of HMW liners. Now that the national distribution agreement has been inked, Aero Industries will begin to market the new products to their extensive dealer network throughout North America.

According to Boyd, "Our plan is to go coast-to-coast with the product and into Canada." To better serve their dealers and customers, Aero Industries will warehouse the inventory and offer installs at their existing Aero facilities in the U.S. and Canada.

Joe Wolfcale, Bulk Material Handling Business Unit Manager for Poly Hi Solidur, believes the partnership will bring a better service offering to their customers. "Having Aero as a National Distributor, allows the end user to have regional service centers throughout the entire United States. We currently have distribution sparsely through the eastern half of the U.S. With Aero on board, the opportunity exists with our two companies and the relationship we are forging, to allow us to better penetrate the U.S., Canada and the world."

"BuckyTubes"

Carbon Nanotechnogies Introduces New Form of Nanotubes

HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 16, 2002--Carbon Nanotechnologies Inc. (CNI) today announced that it has developed an improved form of single-wall carbon nanotubes.  The BuckyPearl form of single-wall carbon nanotubes can be handled more easily in extruders and other polymer-processing equipment that directly blends single-wall carbon nanotubes with polymers and other materials for a variety of end uses.

"This is a significant advance in the development of carbon nanotechnology," said Ron Liotta, senior vice president of CNI. "BuckyPearl single-wall carbon nanotubes are easier to process, yet retain the extraordinary performance properties of Buckytubes. Several of our industrial partners are testing the material in a variety of applications."

CNI is currently producing both Buckytube and BuckyPearl single-wall carbon nanotubes in a pilot plant at the company's headquarters in Houston. BuckyPearl single-wall carbon nanotubes are produced through an additional processing step following the production of conventional Buckytubes. Both Buckytube and BuckyPearl single-wall carbon nanotubes are perfect molecular structures at the atomic level that conduct electricity better than copper, conduct heat better than diamonds, have tensile strength 100 times the strength of steel, and provide unprecedented stiffness, strength, and toughness, yet are lightweight.

They have the potential to revolutionize polymers, electronics, medicine and many other industries. As produced, Buckytubes are very light and self-adhering, which can make the material difficult to process in certain applications. BuckyPearl single-wall carbon nanotubes, in contrast, are compact beads 2 to 4 millimeters in diameter with a bulk density about 40 times that of conventional Buckytubes. In addition to making them easier to process, the increased density of BuckyPearl single-wall carbon nanotubes makes it very unlikely for the material to become airborne during transport and handling, thereby improving the safety and environmentally friendly aspects of the material.

Carbon Nanotechnologies Inc. was founded in early 2000 to commercialize the scientific breakthroughs in carbon nanotechnology made at Rice University under the direction of Nobel prize-winning scientist Dr. Richard Smalley. CNI has the exclusive license for all technology developed by Dr. Smalley at Rice. The company is actively developing new processes and applications for Buckytubes in its own laboratories and those of industrial partners and has become the leading manufacturer of single-wall carbon nanotubes from its pilot plant in Houston. The company expects to be ready to build a commercial production unit to come on stream by the end of 2004 or early 2005.

Ms. Vekemans needs help product bulk density:

We produce powdered fat based emulsifiers by spray-cooling. In order to reduce our caking problems we try to lower our concentrations on fines.

During the tests that we've done I noticed often bulk density variations although parameters as feed viscosity, feed temperature and feed flow remained the same.

How do I deal with this problem?

Mr. Oyler wants to remove static charges:

We are screening a resin thru a 20 mesh Rotex and static electricity is causing fines to go over with coarse product. Grounding screen did not help. Would appreciate any ideas on how to eliminate static.
