New Sponsor : Great Western Manufacturing

Jacksonville Beach, FL -- We are pleased to announce that Great Western Manufacturing has become a sponsor of Powder and Bulk Dot Com.

Great Western is a leading designer and manufacturer of custom industrial processing machinery, serving cereal grain processors, mix plants, bakeries and snack food producers, spice processors and the pet food, chemical, plastics and mineral industries since 1858. Their years of sifting experience has enabled them to develop an exceptional line of gravity flow and pneumatic sifters for a broad range of production and quality assurance applications.

All Great Western sifters feature a gyratory motion that gently and efficiently separates your product. Ease of access for inspection and maintenance has been designed into each sifter model. The line of "Tru-Balance" sifters feature a perfectly balanced drive which is the most dependable and vibration-free drive mechanism available.

"The Most Trusted Name in Sifting and Screening"

Great Western's product range includes sifters, screeners, agitator/blender and stream dividers. They also maintain a complete testing laboratory to evaluate product samples and make equipment recommendations.

Companies can submit materials to the testing lab which uses the Sampl-Sifter to replicate the performance of full scale horizontal gyratory sifters. Testing is used to determine how a product handles and what difficulties might be encountered due to particle size distribution, particle shape, bulk density, moisture and oil content, and the possibility of static charge.

Sterling Group Acquires CST Industries

Houston, TX -- In August, the Sterling Group, L.P., a Houston-based private equity firm, has finalized the acquisition of CST Industries, Inc. ("CST") from CSTI Holdings LLC, an entity controlled by Don Wagner, CST's President and CEO, and George K. Baum Capital Partners, L.P., a Kansas City, Missouri-based private equity fund.

Headquartered in Kansas City, Kansas, CST is a leading global manufacturer and erector of factory coated metal storage tanks. The Company's comprehensive product offering includes bolted and factory welded tanks for use in a wide variety of applications, aluminum geodesic domes, and agricultural feed and waste storage systems.

CST serves numerous end markets including water, wastewater, fire protection, oilfield, agriculture, industrial liquid, plastics, chemicals, minerals, food, construction materials and energy. CST's manufacturing facilities are located in Parsons, Kansas; DeKalb, Illinois; Winchester, Tennessee; and the United Kingdom.

"This company and its predecessors have manufactured tanks for over 100 years, and we intend to continue to support management in their growth plans," said Frank Hevrdejs, Chairman of Sterling. "We have great respect for Don Wagner, Ron Stier and the company they have built, and are excited about the opportunity to partner with CST's management team, which has proven its ability to grow the business globally by expanding sales of the company's tanks into new markets."

"CST has had success in growing its business because of its great employees and the advantages of its products," said Mr. Wagner, who has been the President and CEO of CST and its predecessor since 1990. "Ron Stier has been an integral part of the company for nine years and is well prepared to lead CST to the next level. This company is a great platform for growth, and with the financial and operating assistance of the Sterling Group, the future is very bright."

"It's an exciting time for our business and we are looking forward to our partnership with Sterling. We clearly share a common vision of growing our business through satisfying our customers across our many markets," said Ron Stier, the recently-promoted CEO of CST. "Don has been instrumental to the success of CST and, personally, a great partner. We are pleased he will continue to be active on our Board providing continued support to our management team."

The acquisition was financed primarily with equity from Sterling Group Partners II, L.P., as well as a significant reinvestment by the CST management team. BNP Paribas arranged debt financing for the transaction.

New Plow Blender Handles Problematic Solids

UTICA, NY -- The new Cylindrical Plow Blender is said to handle materials that are extremely fibrous, interlocking, dense, abrasive or moist/oily, has been introduced by Munson Machinery. The cylindrical unit reportedly blends at higher speeds, with higher intensity and with more uniform results than trough-style ribbon, paddle and plow blenders also manufactured by the company.

It consists of a cylindrical vessel and a horizontally-oriented mixing shaft that rotates about 4-times faster than that of trough-style blenders, which fills the entire mixing vessel with fluidized material, maximizing transfer rates while minimizing impact and degradation.

According to the manufacturer, the unit can achieve 100 percent uniform blends in ratios to 1 part per 1000, blend significantly faster than trough-style horizontal mixers, and handle a greater variety of materials, with the exception of pastes. It can be equipped with spray nozzles to coat or agglomerate particles, often with less liquid than would be required with trough-style horizontal blenders.

The blender can be configured with: single or multiple charging ports located on the top of the vessel; contoured access doors on the side; double lip, lantern ring or gas/liquid shaft seals; and a paddle gate, knife gate, plug gate or universal flange at the discharge. It is also available jacketed for heating and cooling applications, and with high-speed intensifiers to increase product dispersion and shear.

Drive options include: a torque arm speed reducer mounted in-line or on a countershaft; a directly coupled, shaft-mounted motor/speed reducer; and a foot mounted gear-reducer-to-chain sprocket drive. The unit is equipped with automated controls and constructed of stainless steel finished to sanitary standards.

Other Munson equipment for dry bulk blending and liquid additions includes rotary batch mixers, continuous rotary blenders, high intensity blenders, and the aforementioned ribbon, paddle and plow blenders. Size reduction equipment also produced by the company includes screen classifying cutters, centrifugal impact mills, rotary de-clumpers, shredders, attrition mills and hammer mills.

Help Forum : Hot Messages from the Help Forum

People post their requests for help and offer their suggestions to others in our open forum.

Mr. Pernalete needs help with pneumatic conveying:

Good day, I am designing a conveying system to transport fresh catalyst from a hopper to an FCC regenerator. In the designs I have seen there are air lines along the pipe, is this a good practice?

Isn't the air injection at inlet enough, taking in account the mass volume coming from the mass relation between the air and solids for dilute phase?

Another question, does somebody has data for FCC catalyst in order to calculate the drop pressure? The K coefficient.

Does somebody have some method where I can calculate an preliminary estimate of the drop pressure?  (to post reply, click here)

I appreciate any information,
