Better Blending
:
Mathis Announces Partnership with Tote
Fredericton,
NB, Canada and Burleson, TX, USA -- Mathis Instruments and
Tote Systems International have partnered to provide the
complete package for automated, wireless blending control
using their effusivity sensor systems. The successful output
of this new venture will allow simple, scalable migration
from formulation to manufacturing environments. This
advancement is consistent with the PAT framework that is
being advocated within the pharmaceutical industry.
“This
automation project will give users what they have been
asking for – uninterrupted feedback on their blending
process, including endpoint and lubrication”, says Dr. Nancy
Mathis, President and CEO of Mathis Instruments. “Beyond the
science, we want to make implementation simple by offering a
complete solution through our partnerships.”
“This
is a three way win. Mathis brings the science, Tote brings
the containerized material handling technology and the
customer brings their process control requirements,” says
Wade Meyer, Director of Business Development at Tote
Systems. “Our combined knowledge brings a full solution to
the customer.” Tote will provide an optimized mechanical
interface for bins to work seamlessly with the effusivity
sensors. This design is planned to be generic enough for all
bin types and not be exclusively for Tote blenders.

Packaging
: Flexible Robot Palletizes 50 Pails Per Minute
Vista,
CA -- Pacific Robotics has developed a high speed robotic
palletizer to palletize different size pails with the same
tooling. By using a robot with a cycle time of 6 seconds
and a vacuum tool with a row of vacuum cups that picks up
5 small pails per lift, the robotic palletizer achieves a
throughput of 50 pails per minute. A second row of 4
vacuum cups on the same tool picks up a row of 4 larger
pails to achieve a line speed of 40 pails per minute for
that product.
The robot is taught to handle
both products by jogging the robot so that the tool is
placed with the appropriate line of vacuum cups over the
product and the vacuum system activated to pick up the
pails. By maneuvering the load to the appropriate place on
the pallet and releasing the load, the complete pallet
pattern is taught and registered in the robot control
system for recall when that product is to be palletized.
Pacific Robotics' focus is on
robotic palletizing systems. They have supply arrangements
with several robot manufacturers. They integrate the
robots with sensor systems and tooling to create a work
cell for loading product on shipping pallets. Also, they
supply infeed conveyors, pallet conveyors, pallet and slip
sheet magazines, and safety barriers at the customer's
option.

Marcia wants to add
ingredients to cereal:
I would like to learn about my options for
equipment that can be used in adding peanuts or raisins or
fruit bits or clumps of other additives to cereal.
Initially, I am thinking that screw feeders or Syntron
