Gemco Valve Company a leading manufacturer of solids handling valves and related powder loading and unloading equipment introduces the Gemco Valve Converter.

Click hereThis conversion tool is customized for the powder bulk solids industry and can help answer question like - What is a number 4 polish? What are pounds per cubic feet in grams per cubic centimeter? What is 1200 mesh in micron? As well as the more commonly used conversions for mass, density, length, volume, pressure/vacuum and temperature the converter adds conversions for the lesser know units for surface finish and mesh sizes.

For a demonstration visit Gemco Valve's web site where a desktop version of the converter is also available for download. I-Pro Expo Cancelled

Due to the circumstances arising out of the recent tragic events, I-PRO EXPO regrets to inform that we have no choice other than to cancel I-PRO EXPO, scheduled for October 4-5, 2001 in Miami Beach, Fl.

Click hereThis decision is based upon a number of prevailing conditions out of our control. These include, but are not limited to, international travel restrictions, domestic airport shutdowns, federal embargoes on freight and passengers coming into the U.S., and the inability of the industry to travel to and within the U.S.

The I-PRO management team and Process Equipment Manufacturers Association (PEMA), the event sponsor, conducted numerous conversations with exhibitors, attendees, conferees, conference speakers, media outlets and service providers that garnered information that further supported the decision to cancel the event.

In light of this national tragedy, the I-PRO EXPO Show management has decided to waive all conditions for reimbursement as indicated in exhibitor contracts, and credit exhibitors the full 100% of their current payment to any of the Powder family of events, including IPRO 2002, scheduled for October 16-17, or INTERPHEX events. Or, if you choose, you may opt for a full refund. Attendance and conference registration fees will also be refunded.

Based on the information available at this time, it appears that airline carriers are waiving penalties for cancellations. You are encouraged to contact your booking agent for the most up-to-date status of your carrier’s current cancellation penalty policies. In coming days Reed Exhibitions and PEMA officials will meet and deliberate processes and procedures to move forward.

As there will be many questions and concerns relating to this decision, we will keep you informed through a continuing series of communications and messages.

Like all Americans, our hearts go out to the victims of the tragedy on September 11. Our prayers and sympathies are extended to those who have experienced loss as a result of this tragedy.

Sincerely, The I-PRO Management Team

32,000 Personnel Worldwide

Metso and Svedala Create World Leader in Mineral Processing Technology

Metso Corporation has decided to complete its offer to the shareholders of Svedala Industri AB. The combination of Metso Minerals with Svedala creates a clear world leader in rock and mineral processing technology. The acquisition will increase Metso's net sales to approximately EUR 5,500 million and the amount of personnel to 32,000. Metso's estimate of the synergies available are at EUR 70 million per annum. Metso believes that the acquisition will be earnings enhancing from 12 months after completion of the acquisition.

Click hereOn September 10, 2001, Metso declared its offer for Svedala unconditional and indicated that settlement of the offer will begin on September 14, 2001. This is an important move for Metso in line with its strategy of moving to a more balanced portfolio with a less cyclical business mix and increasing the sales volume of service activities. Metso believes that the acquisition will be earnings enhancing from 12 months after completion of the acquisition.

Following the acquisition of Svedala, Metso owns two global leaders in the Metso Paper and Metso Minerals businesses, both with strong global market shares. These are supported by the Metso Automation business which aims to take advantage of the considerable opportunities in embedded machine intelligence, and are complemented by Metso Ventures.

Following completion, Metso is ready to initiate an immediate integration program that has been planned over the course of the offer period. Metso continues to estimate synergies at EUR 70 million, principally from elimination of overlapping administration costs and integration of distribution networks and manufacturing operations. These are expected to be realized in full in 2003, with roughly 50% being achieved in 2002. Restructuring costs are estimated at EUR 60-70 million. There are also opportunities for revenue growth from developing the broader product and service offering of the enlarged Metso Minerals.

Olli Vaartimo has been appointed President of enlarged Metso Minerals. Olli Vaartimo has been President of current Metso Minerals from 1993. Vaartimo joined Rauma-Repola in 1974. Born 1950, he has an MSc in Economics and Business Administration. At 30 June 2001 Metso had net debt of EUR 56 million and Svedala had net debt of EUR 554 million. The acquisition has been financed through a syndicated bank facility at attractive rates. Metso aims to restore net gearing to within the range of 40-50% within 18 months following closing of the acquisition through the disposal of non-core assets and its operating cash flow.

Brazilian Turnaround

Good Feed Means Good Meat

In no other country in the world are the feed production growth rates higher than in Brazil. Following substantial investments – also in the production systems of Buhler – meat producer Perdigao looks forward to a successful future in the export market.

Click hereUntil 1990, Brazil was cut off from the outside world. For example, computer imports up to this point in time were not allowed. Under the government of the then President, Fernando Collor, the situation changed. At first, the Brazilian economy was unable to cope with the extremely rapid change of pace when import restrictions were relaxed. This was reflected in the stubbornly high inflation rate of about 500 percent annually.

Turnaround in the agricultural industry

In 1990, Brazil produced about 15 million metric tons of animal feeds. Ever since, feed production has been on a steady rise, reaching 32 million tons in 1999. Poultry and pork production has increased accordingly. The feed industry is divided into various sectors: poultry feed (56.7 percent), pig feed (32.8), cattle feed (5.3), pet food (2.5) and various others (2.5). These high growth rates are attributable to economic stability, which has allowed lower income classes to consume meat, milk and other secondary products more often. Also the relaxation of customs export provisions has contributed to this situation.

Forecasts predict that feed production will increase over the next five years at around six percent annually. This, of course, is only possible if economic stability is maintained and state investments remain at their current levels. Brazilian producers are expected to manufacture about 47 million metric tons of animal feed annually by the year 2003.

Poultry from Brazil

The significance of agriculture in Brazil is illustrated by the following figures: Each day, 8.3 million chickens are slaughtered, which translates into a poultry production volume of 12,600 tons a day. Modernization of slaughterhouses has allowed exports to be substantially increased. In 1998, Brazil exported some 610,000 metric tons of poultry meat (13 percent of total production) and 73,000 tons of pork (4 percent). The main consumers being Saudi Arabia and Hong Kong, as well as all European countries.

New large-scale project

Meat producer Perdigao is currently investing in Latin America’s biggest industrial poultry and pig breeding complex. Capital spending will total 250 million US dollars and is part of an effort to develop Brazil’s mid-eastern region. With its new plant, Perdigao intends to consolidate its number two position in the national market, improve it’s coverage of the northern and mid-eastern market sectors, and increase its exports. Today, Perdigao processes 570,000 tons of meat products a year, which requires the slaughtering of 1.1 million chickens and 6800 pigs each day. The new investments are to boost current output by 50 percent. The complex will process 300,000 chickens and 3500 pigs a day into 260,000 tons of meat products. It is made up of a feed mill, slaughterhouses for poultry and pigs, facilities for processing the products, and poultry breeding units. This will create some 3000 direct and 4500 indirect jobs.

Confidence in Buhler

Buhler supplied the new feed mill to meat producer Perdigao on a turnkey basis. Perdigao’s confidence in a long-term relationship and its many positive experiences led the company to award the contract to Buhler. Among the plants already purchased by Perdigao from Buhler in earlier years are a vegetable oil system and a soybean hulling installation from Buhler. The figures of the new feed mill are of gigantic proportions: From the year 2003, Perdigao’s new Buhler-supplied plant will manufacture 60,000 metric tons of feed a month – 28,000 tons for poultry, 24,000 tons for pigs, and 8000 tons for various other animal species. In addition, the feed mill complex incorporates a mineral premix plant, which has a capacity of 600 tons a month.

Buhler is the global technology partner for efficient production systems, engineering solutions and the associated services in the food processing industry, in chemical process engineering and in die casting.
