Carver, Inc. Acquires Gump Division of Buffalo Technologies
------------------------------------------------------------
SAVANNAH, Ga., Sept. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Savannah-based Carver,
Inc., a major supplier of custom-manufactured process equipment,
announced today the acquisition of the Gump division of Buffalo
Technologies Corporation.
Gump manufactures high-quality screeners, sifters, feeders
and packers for a wide range of process industries including
food, chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Gump is also a pioneer
of pneumatic in-line screeners and sifters that eliminate the
need for compressors, airlocks, collectors and receiving
hoppers.
Carver has been the leading supplier of equipment to the world
oilseed industry for more than 150 years, offering a full range
of preparation equipment, engineering, start-up and maintenance
services. In recent years, the Company has expanded product
applications to other industries such as agriculture, textile,
food and fiber industries. Carver has sold equipment and
fully-engineered installations in more than 70 countries
worldwide.
"Gump's products are a good complement to our own," said Carver
President and CEO Jack Lee. "With the Gump acquisition, we plan
to increase our market share in segments outside of our core
business in the oilseed and similar industries. We also plan
to take Gump products that have been sold traditionally as single
units and design complete systems that address a much broader
part of the manufacturing process."
The acquisition of Gump provides a natural extension of Carver's
capabilities, enabling the Company to offer a broader range of
solutions to both Gump and Carver markets. Customers are now
able to benefit from using a single source for their processing
requirements, including the design and supply of complete
systems for feeding, cleaning, separating, sifting and conveying
a wide range of products.
Gump's operations will be transferred immediately from Buffalo,
New York to Carver's Savannah, Georgia headquarters, including
manufacturing, sales & service, engineering and Gump's full
testing facility.
Gump products will continue to be sold domestically through the
Company's existing network of Gump agents, who will also sell
Carver products. Carver also plans to increase significantly
Gump's exposure to international markets. Both existing and
new Carver-Gump agents will handle overseas sales.

Plastics Recycler Eliminates Downtime with Silo Unloading System
------------------------------------------------------------
At Syntec Plastics Inc., downtime is not an option. This
Charlotte, North Carolina-based plastics recycler runs its
equipment 24 hours per day, seven days a week. That leaves no
room to make up lost time. Even one hour of downtime is an
hour that can never be regained.
"We've done our job when we process more than 3500 pounds of
post-consumer polyolefin waste every hour," says Syntec Plastics
Owner David Sugg. And, commenting on his worst nightmare, "the
time came when we could no longer afford material bridging,
inconsistent feed rates, and damage caused by a poor silo
unloading system."
In its 50,000 square-foot facility, Syntec Plastics recycles
both polyethylene and polypropylene plastic products. Derived
from discarded goods such as cotton bale wrap and plastic film
used by the nursery and textile industries, the material is
size-reduced, shredded, ground, washed, dried, extruded and
pelletized. Its end use is as an injection molding compound
for the automotive industry.
During his first year in business, Sugg experienced costly
downtime and inefficient material feed on a daily basis. The
bottleneck occurred after washed and dried plastic film entered
a gravity-feed storage silo. The weight and downward pressure
of the material created compaction, made worse by heat,
moisture and particular flow characteristics. Bridging easily,
the light fibrous polyethylene and polypropylene materials
stuck in massive amounts to the interior storage silo walls.
At least three times in each twelve-hour shift (more if the
air was laden with static electricity), an operator would
have to physically get inside the silo to free it up. Then
material feed to the extrusion line could continue -- until
bridging occurred again.
Positive Material Flow
Syntec Plastics solved the problem with the acquisition of a
highly reliable storage silo and hopper bin sweep auger
unloading system manufactured by Laidig Industrial Systems
based in Mishawaka, Indiana. Available in various sizes, the
Laidig Model 4345 cone-bottom unloading system acts as a
bridge breaker to guarantee positive material flow from the
45-degree-angled hopper bin, rather than relying upon gravity
or vibration. The unloader is powered by a hydraulic pump
that enables variable speed control of screw rotation, and
the advancement of the screw into the bridged, packed material.
Its maximum 32-foot-diameter sweep auger undercuts the entire
mass from wall to wall, creating a first-in/first-out delivery
system. Laidig unloading systems can be installed into a new
silo or retrofit into existing structures.
As every material flows differently, rigorous testing of
the actual material to be processed is conducted in Laidig's
test facility. Based upon material flow characteristics,
storage period, unloading rate and expected use, the Laidig
system is designed, custom-engineered and installed on site
-- only after being completely assembled and tested in the
shop prior to shipping.
At Syntec Plastics, the Laidig Model 4345 replaced an
antiquated flail chain system which employed swinging chains
that knocked against the silo interior to reduce bridging.
The chains dented the silo walls which, with stretching
and wear and tear, began to loosen. Inevitably, a portion
of chain separated, departed the silo, and entered the
extrusion line, locking the system.
"The chain actually got wedged in the screw of the extruder,"
says Syntec Plastics Owner David Sugg. "This resulted in a
full week of downtime and more than $100,000 of damage. We
had to completely disassemble the entire extruder and have
it pressed out."
About Laidig:

handling equipment for a growing worldwide marketplace.

Pennsylvania Introduces New Sizes of Clinker Crusher
------------------------------------------------------------
Due to demands from the power generation industry, Pennsylvania
Crusher now offers their Clinker Crusher in a number of new sizes.
All models of the Pennsylvania Clinker Crusher will reduce
clinker (boiler ash) to the required top size, which normally
is 1 1/4" to 1 1/2" X 0".
These new sizes incorporate all of the advantages of previous
sizes, most notably a hinged panel door that enables clearance
of jams and inspections with no need to remove the unit from
its operating position. All sizes also have a seal arrangement
that overcomes the problem of leakage so prevalent with ordinary
makes.
This crusher's grinding roll has a special tooth pattern that
delivers greater peak-crushing force. This results in more
efficient crushing.
Lastly, the roll shell of all Pennsylvania sizes is in six
segments, making them far lighter and easier to install. The
roll shell of other makes is divided into only four or five
segments or, in one case, is a single massive piece.
The Pennsylvania Clinker Crusher is offered in sizes and styles
to permit direct replacement of nearly every other make now in
use, including single-roll and double-roll models, by merely
unbolting the old units and bolting in the new Pennsylvania
models.

New Kneader Extruder Literature Published
------------------------------------------------------------
Charles Ross and Son Company today announced the completion
of a new six- page color brochure illustrating and describing
its line of Kneader Extruders.
The Kneader Extruder is a combination mixer/extruder used
for extremely high viscosity mixing applications. During
the mixing cycle the blades rotate toward each other while
the screw rotates and acts as a feed screw to the blades.
This unique mixing combination shortens the mix time when
compared to conventional non-screw discharge machines by
about 15%. The screw permits complete and rapid discharge,
after the mix cycle is complete, by rotating the discharge
screw toward the discharge end of the mixer. The screw
discharges the mixed material through a discharge die or
directly to a subsequent process or to packaging.
Kneader Extruders are constructed in many sizes from 1 gallon
through 1000 gallons. They can be supplied with many optional
features including a range of materials of construction,
jackets to heat and cool, vacuum for deaeration of the
product, variable speed drives and more.
A 15 gallon test machine is available for evaluation and is
installed in the Ross Test and Development Center at the
companies Hauppauge, Long Island facility.

Mr. Kolberg needs help with codes regulating storage silos:
I would like to spec out some coned bottom storage silos but
I can't find any codes regulating their fabrication. In the

Mr. Silva needs help with urea handling and storage:
A customer in Venezuela has requested my company information
about:
- Facilities to storage 3000 MT of urea, in bulk, including
truck unloading and handling equipment.
- Conveying systems from the storage place to process zone,
including reactors loading equipment for 50 MT/day.
- Instead of bulk, equipment to handle 1 MT urea jumbo bags
could be also considered. Bags unloading and urea conveying
to reacting zone are required.
We are interested in receiving offers for this equipment
requirement.
