Introduction
------------------------------------------------------------

Just a short note to let you know of a great effect I saw
on an industry web site. Gemco is a manufacture of valves
and other equipment. On their site, which is very nicely
designed, they have an illustration of a valve with arrows
and bullets pointing out the valve's features.

What is unique about this is the use of what is called in web
design, a "mouseover". A mouseover is a special Java effect
that swaps one image for another when you pass the cursor or
mouse pointer over the image. You see mouseovers used mostly
for navigation links where the link changes colors or looks
like a button has been pressed.

Gemco's site has done it one better. When you pass the cursor
over the item number, the description of that particular item
is shown beneath it. Very clever.

You can check this out yourself by going to:
Gemco Valve Company Gemco

We really like this advanced web design technique is used to
provide better product knowledge and understanding.

USDA Compliant, Quick-Clean Orifice Gate Valve
------------------------------------------------------------

The newly-designed Quick-Clean Orifice Gate can be easily
taken apart and re-assembled in minutes without tools for
applications which require periodic cleaning. Yet, it retains
its ability to handle materials being conveyed under differential
pressures (consult factory for size and application criteria).

The Quick-Clean Orifice Gate is the perfect solution for
industries which require a valve to be cleaned daily or during
shift changes (e.g. certain foods, pigments. . .)

Available in 2” through 8” tube sizes, the Quick-Clean Orifice
Gate offers a variety of mounting modifications--making it easily
adaptable to existing situations.

Quick-Clean Orifice Gates are currently being used in USDA
compliant facilities including those producing meat, poultry
and dairy products.

In-Line High Shear Mixer Emulsifier for Difficult to Wet Powders
------------------------------------------------------------

Charles Ross & Son Company has just introduced a new in-line
mixer emulsifier which as the capability of assisting in the
wetting of difficult to wet solids or minor liquids, all on
a continuous basis.

How It Works

This new design draws in liquid and solids into the inlet
connection, exposes the mixture to mechanical and hydraulic
shear at the rotor-stator interface, and then expels the product
through the outlet connection.

The unit takes advantage of a strong vacuum force that occurs
behind the rotor-stator. Powder hoppers or flexible tubes and
wands can be used to feed the materials to the high shear zone.

Many models are available to permit a client to select the
exact machine for his particular process needs. A sanitary version
is available and is mounted on a portable stainless steel cart.

The Mixer Emulsifier is built with sanitary fittings to permit
complete and easy cleaning between batches.

Stretch Hood Palletizing Saves Money and Energy
------------------------------------------------------------

Higher demands on load securing increases demand for top
quality end-of-line packaging machinery. The change in the
cement industry to the 25 kg sack means that the pallet loads
require improved securing as pallet loads consisting of the
smaller size of sacks have a lower transport stability than
loads made of 40-50 kg sacks.

During the past few months the company of Kurt Lachenmeier A/S
in Denmark has signed contracts for the supply of 7 complete
lines of hood stretch plants for wrapping cement and plaster.

The plants were sold to Aalborg Portland in Aalborg, Denmark, -
Montenovo Werke in Westerstetten, Germany, - Castle Cement
Limited, Ketton, England, and to Loma Negra C.I.A.S.A., Buenos
Aires in Argentina.

A film hood whose circumference is smaller than the load is
stretched hydraulically to a dimension matching the outer
circumference of the load. The hood is stretched over the
load and under the pallet.

Stretching creates horizontal and vertical load holding
forces ensuring a highly reliable hold of load and pallet
and at the same time the film protects the load from dust
and water. These are some of the qualities which have prepared
the way for the use of hood stretch also in the cement industry.

Another advantage of the hood stretch method is that the film
always fits the load tightly. Palletizing often leaves air in
the sacks of which the contents can compact during transportation
changing the pack’s shape, but due to the strong vertical and
horizontal load holding forces the protective film moves with
the product and there is no loss of stability.

As the stretch hood is applied onto the load without the use
of heat as opposed to the shrink hoods used previously, a
reduction in energy consumption can be recorded when compared
to shrink wrapping.

A reduction in film consumption can also be achieved. The
high stretchability of the latest stretch films also makes
it possible to use only one film size for several different
pallet dimensions.

Hot Messages from the Help Forum
------------------------------------------------------------

We cleaned up the Help Forum last week and removed over 300+
messages. This is done periodically, every 6 months or so,
when the Forum gets too big and the page takes too long to
load. You can find past messages from July of 1999 to present
archived in the Newsletter Archives.

People post their requests for help and offer their suggestions
to others in our open forum.

Mr. Jaynes is looking for better flow:

We have a 60 m3 hopper lined with UHMWPE which experiences
mass flow over 3/4 of its length, from back towards the front.

We are finding some hang-up near the front. Can anyone advise
whether vibration at the end of a load cycle would be an
option? Or simply compound the problem?

Mr. Gavin wants to safely convey sulfur:

Has anybody had experience with pneumatically conveying sulfur
(sulfur)? I am worried about the potential explosive nature of
sulfur and whether it would be necessary to use an inert gas
such as nitrogen as the conveying medium.

The system I am interested in would also comprise a vacuum
offloading section which would prevent the use of such a gas. I
have also been told that warm sulfur tends to build up in the
bends.

Any information will be appreciated.

Mr. Renterghem has glowing sludge pellets:

We do have a 100 m3 storage silo for the storage of dry sludge
pellets. The dry sludge pellets have a dry solid content of
> 90 % and are cooled to < 40 C before storage. The pellets
do have a diameter of 1 to 5 mm.

Sometimes it happen that the temperature in a ''cluster" of
pellets in the middle of the storage silo starts to rise.
Once this resulted even in glowing of the small cluster of
pellets.

What can be the reason of this rise in temperature ?
How can we prevent this ?

Mr. Alghanim needs silos and loaders for cement:

We have pleasure in introducing ourselves as a company in
Kuwait engaged in trading of construction materials,
including bulk cement.

We are looking for ground level Cement Silos and Pneumatic
Unloaders to unload cement from the above silo to standard
upright cement silos. The capacity of the unloader to be
between 100 to 200 tons/hour and should be able to feed
cement into 10 or 12 upright silos in the near vicinity,
one by one, through fixed pipe line connection.

Please advise whether you have any standard design for
the ground level silos capacity 15,000-40,000 cubic meters.
We plan to build the ground level silo with steel, it
should be of simple design and low construction cost. If
you have a cheaper alternative in silo made of concrete,
please advise us.

Please give us, as soon as possible, your lowest possible
quotation for the supply (C & F Kuwait), erection and
commissioning of above Pneumatic Unloader and design of
the ground level silo.
