Both Fire and Surface-Electric Resistant

Smiley Monroe Polyurethane Conveyor Components Certified For Underground Use

Maze, Northern Ireland - Polyurethane (PU) components in fire retardant impact bars manufactured by Smiley Monroe have been cleared for use on underground conveyor systems following rigorous and independent tests for fire and electrostatic resistance.

Click hereIn tests by Cerberus (Mining Acceptance Services) of Burton on Trent at the School of Chemical, Environmental and Mining Engineering of the University of Nottingham PU components used by Smiley Monroe were certified as meeting the fire resistance and surface electrical resistance criteria of the former British Coal Acceptance Scheme for the Use of Non-Metallic Materials and Substances (the Non-Metallic Scheme).  The scheme remains the safety benchmark for the use of non-metallic materials in underground mining and other operations.

Cerberus was asked by Smiley Monroe, in July, to test Smiley Monroe PU C60 and C95 materials, developed by the company’s R&D unit in conjunction with the Polymer Processing Research Centre at Queen’s University, Belfast and, which are used in its impact bars for underground conveyor systems against the scheme’s rigorous criteria. The tests found that Smiley Monroe PU materials were well within the requirements laid down in the Non-Metallic Scheme in terms of both fire and surface electrical resistance.

Referring to the use of Smiley Monroe PU in contact with moving parts, the assessment said: "The results for both products were well within the value of 3 x 108 ohms considered acceptable for use underground and thus appropriate for a unit such as this in constant and intimate contact with a moving conveyor belt."

The PU bars are used in conveyor belt impact modules, which consist of approximately seven units, each between 1240 and 1500mm long and 100mm wide and up to 75mm deep. Each unit consists of a fabricated steel base beneath a layer of Smiley Monroe PU C60 which acts as a shock absorber. To the upper surface of the PU C60 is bonded a layer Smiley Monroe PU C95 which acts as a low friction wear resistant surface.

Commenting on the assessment, Vaughan Monroe, Smiley Monroe’s managing director, said: "We asked Cerberus to carry out the tests because a number of mining companies have expressed interest in our impact bar modules which have proved their durability and reliability, over many years, in the most exacting quarrying and surface materials handling operations.

"The PU used in our products has now been certified as complying with the rigorous safety standards laid down in the scheme. We are confident that the performance of the materials in these rigorous tests will encourage underground operators to consider the benefits of our spillage control products. "It means that our proven spillage control systems can be installed at underground transfer points and will extend the benefits experienced by surface conveyor equipment to these operators," he added.

Smiley Monroe is a leading United Kingdom manufacturer of spillage control and screening products for the materials handling industry. The company, which operates from a network of depots in the Midlands, the North of England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, also exports its products to clients in Europe and the US.

Testing is Imperative

New Conveyor Ideal for Compactible Materials

Dallas, Texas - For handling difficult-to-convey materials that tend to cake or compact while being conveyed, Triple/S Dynamics introduces the Slipstick Conveyor with a patented system for breaking up compacted dry materials.

Click hereAt controlled intervals, the surface of the horizontal conveyor is arched upward to break up accumulated material, allowing it to continue moving down the length off the conveyor. The trough of the conveyor, which may be covered and clamped for dust control, is lined with a UHMW sheet. UHMW exhibits excellent abrasion resistance and release characteristics and works even better when it is distorted to break up accumulations of caked fines.

The arching motion is induced in the UHMW liner by inflating a collapsed tube that extends along the length of the conveyor, beneath the UHMW liner. A timer is used for controlling the interval at which compressed air is alternately fed into the tube and then released after the accumulated material bed is broken up for conveying.

For horizontal conveying of green foundry sands or other sticky or compacting materials, the Slipstick Conveyor provides a better solution for tackling difficult material handling problems.

Uses Less Horsepower

V-SLAM™ Impactor Delivers Size Reductions With Less Fines

AURORA, INDIANA - The V-Slam™ vertical shaft impactor from Stedman Machine Company offers industrial producers more final product on the first pass, a low initial investment and the opportunity for lower operating costs throughout the crusher's life. The V-Slam's impact crushing creates fewer fines, reducing machine component wear and maintenance costs.

The V-Slam efficiently crushes minerals, ores and chemicals with up to 15:1 reduction ratios and works well in industrial applications such as glass, slag, bottom boiler ash, iron-ores and scrap tungsten carbide pieces. With rotor speeds of up to 15,000 feet per minute, the V-Slam has production capacities ranging from 8 to 100 TPH. The wide receiving tube funnels material up to 2" in size into the feed opening. An open, bottom discharge eliminates screens on the machine and reduces clogging. The machine utilizes less floor space than other crushers with comparable production capabilities.

In addition to offering a low initial investment, the machine's design can reduce a company's long-term operating costs. The impactor's single drive uses less horsepower per ton when compared to dual-drive systems. This design also incorporates fewer drive components, which can reduce maintenance costs. Motor sizes to operate the V-Slam™ are custom-designed to fit an operation's production requirements, so customers can save money throughout the life of the impactor by not powering larger motors than what the application calls for.

The impactor's standard table shoes and anvils are made of heavy-duty, high-chrome metallurgy for superior wear life. Easy height adjustment of the feed tube evenly distributes material over the shoes and maximizes flow through the crushing chamber. A 3-stage, anvil ring indexing system offers vertical anvil adjustment for precise product gradations. Their square design allows anvils to be rotated 180°, extending wear life. The tapered wedge lock system allows for simple anvil replacement. Optional alloys are available for both the shoes and anvil.

The user-friendly V-Slam features a hydraulically opening top cover that allows unimpeded access to the crushing chamber. By simply removing the top clamps, operators can easily inspect or replace shoes and anvils and clean the crushing chamber. The V-Slam's™ support table utilizes exchangeable bearing cartridge assemblies that can be quickly replaced and rebuilt by Stedman in the future. An automatic lubrication system circulates oil through the top and bottom bearing assemblies during operation. This system reduces maintenance requirements by eliminating the need for manual lubrication through zirc fittings.

As with all Stedman size reduction technologies, the customer is encouraged to test the application before purchasing the V-Slam. By providing a sample of the material to be crushed, Stedman's full-size test-lab can assist in identifying the right machine for the application. Stedman Machine Company, the originator of the cage mill, is the leader in providing solutions to size reduction needs. Stedman's full range of equipment includes vertical and horizontal shaft impactors, cage mills, lumpbreakers and fine grind mills.

Mr. Van der Veken needs any easy to clean conveyor:

We are looking for a system to transport batches from 80 kg to a blender, the problem is that it have to be a system which is easy-to-clean, because we change many times from colors, and from formula to formula.

Thanks for every idea.

Mr. Loeffler needs help calculating conveyor horsepower:

I need an equation to determine the amount of horsepower or belt tension when using a plow to side discharge from a flat belt. I am conveying potatoes on a slider bed conveyor with 6" sides. For the most part the potatoes are single layer.

Thank you,
