DMN : Dust Lock is ATEX Approved
& Flameproof
The
Netherlands -- The DL dust airlock from DMN-Westinghouse has
been ATEX approved and optional available flameproof up to 3
bar. The ATEX approval is awarded for protective system /
equipment up to 3 bar, Dust class 2 marking Ex II D /
1D/2GD, as well as for equipment marking Ex II 1D/2GD.
The
DMN-Westinghouse DL (Dust Lock) is of a dedicated design for
filter applications and is conforming to ATEX Directive
94/9/EC. The standard valve is pressure shock resistant up
to 10 bar g pressure. Recently the DL was also tested and
approved flameproof up to 3 bar. Both the standard version
and the ATEX 3 bar flameproof version can be delivered ex
stock.
The
universal flanges on both sides of the valve are suitable
for both round and square counter flanges and are drilled to
PN 10. The angle of the inlet down to the rotor has been
kept as steep as possible, to reduce the chance of bridging.
The outlet from the valve is round, so that you can
discharge into either a round or square connection.
The
DL valve has a very large inlet and a direct drive,
providing ample torque to drive the rotor, which has
replaceable and adjustable polyurethane blades. An optional
steel fixed bladed rotor is also available.
The
standard drive is a Nord helical geared motor, type
SK01-F-71L/4, 0.37 kW, IP 55, isol. F, giving 27 rpm at 50
Hz and 32.4 rpm at 60 Hz. Suitable for 230/400V 50 Hz and
278/480V 60 Hz. The standard model is suitable for handling
products up to a temperature of 70 °C and a maximum pressure
differential of 0.5 bar.

Buhler : Supplies Large Grain Mill to Saudi Arabia
Uzwil,
Switzerland -- The Buhler Technology Group has been
awarded a contract from Saudi Arabia for the supply of a
large grain mill. The total worth of this turnkey order
based on state-of-the-art grain milling technology is
CHF 40 million.
The Grain Silo Flour Mills
Organization (GSFMO) has awarded the Buhler Group a
contract for the supply of a large-scale installation.
The new grain milling facility will be built near Al
Madinah, one of the pilgrim sites in Saudi Arabia. The
contract worth a total of CHF 40 million includes –
beside the buildings – the entire electrical
installation, mechanical equipment, and control system
plus installation and start-up.
The building construction
worth CHF 10 million has been entrusted to an outside
subcontractor, whereas all the other items of the
contract will be supplied by Buhler itself. The milling
installation will have a processing capacity of 600
metric tons a day. Other plant sections include a grain
storage silo, a precleaning system, a finished products
storage system, three bagging lines, and a product
loadout section. The plant is scheduled to start
operation within about two years. This is a great
challenge for a turnkey project.
The Saudi population is
growing at an annual rate of about four percent, and
Saudi Arabia is covering its food supply requirements by
growing high-quality wheat (two million metric tons per
year). Large fields of wheat are under cultivation in
the middle of the desert. The necessary water is in some
cases pumped from a depth of several hundred meters onto
the fields to irrigate the crops.
The grinding process also
requires large volumes of water to ensure that the grain
and later on the flour will not dry out. An Airwash
system specially developed for hot regions humidifies
the process air. The offices and building sections
housing the electrical equipment must be air-conditioned
in view of the high outdoor temperatures, which may
reach 50 degrees Celsius. On the other hand, the
installation work is normally carried out at these high
temperatures.
Buhler is a global technology
group and system partner for the supply of plant,
equipment, and process expertise in the fields of Food
Processing, Chemical Engineering, and Die Casting, with
a global payroll of over 6000 and annual sales
(turnover) of 1.5 billion Swiss francs.

Mr. Bundalli wants coating for
screw conveyors:
We are working on a project
where we will have collection screws under our proprietary
"Moving Hole" feeder to convey poultry litter fuel. Abrasion
resistant coatings on the screw is specified. "Unideg"
lining compound made in the UK is suggested.
We would like feedback from
anyone with first hand experience or expertise in abrasion
resistant coatings for screws. An alternative coating I have
come across is Belzona - again made in the UK.
We have tested wall friction
for this coating, which is very low against biomass.
According to product literature, this coating provides good
erosion/corrosion protection. Anyone with experience or
expertise on this coating?

Mr. Fradd wants to redesign his
storage bins:
BACKGROUND: We have 2
cylindrical storage bins each of 250 t capacity that feeds
raw zinc oxide powder out through the bottom cone which
holds up at times & includes lumps, at times can be a moist
rubble type product (reclaimed and "dried" from thickener
tanks and sumps).
The online process raw fume
product feeds into one of either bins 24/7 and is about 85
degrees C. Fume mix is also fed into the same bin as
mentioned above and can include EAF fines, boiler ash etc.
Compressed air ( and probably wet) can be blown in at right
angles on the bin side to aid in removing hang ups.
MORE RECENT: We've always had
bin activators that oscillate the cone on the bin discharge
to run fume into a VFI controlled discharge screw (signal
back by a weighfeeder belt) and due to all the recent "poor
bin flows" we have been experiencing we are about to retro
fit, redesign, do away with but fix the problem.
We air sparge from a door at
the bottom too but this pressurizes the bin, flood feeds,
buries weighfeeder etc.
Got any ideas how to
modernize? I've heard about live bottoms, mass flow bins in
part but are there options (more modern) that may even do
away with the bins altogether? Sorry for the long
spiel.
