Shocking News : B.A.G. Corp. Introduces a New FIBC

Dallas, TX,  --- B.A.G. Corp. introduces an FIBC (Flexible Intermediate Bulk Container) made entirely of FDA accepted components for use in applications with electrostatic hazards. The OhmX D+™ Super Sack® container combines the unique advantages of both the Type D and C FIBCs.

The Type D offers reliable static dissipation without the need for grounding, while the Type C prevents induction charging and eliminates static accumulation via a grounded connection. The Ohm X D+ does not require grounding during use as it significantly reduces the level of induction compared to traditional type D FIBCs. When grounded, there is no induction charging hazard, and if left ungrounded, there is no spark discharge hazard. The OhmX D+ container is constructed with fabric manufactured by Palrig of Israel.

"Other static FIBCs are safe. The OhmX D+ container is SAFE+." -Jacob Soker, Chief Engineer of fabric, Palrig

About B.A.G. Corp.

B.A.G. Corp.® is original and only source of the Super Sack® container. Since 1969. BAG. Corp. has developed and manufactured Super Sack® containers, woven polypropylene flexible intermediate bulk containers (FIBCs) for the shipping, handling and storing of dry, flowable and fluid products. The company also produces specialty liners for boxes, drums and FIBCs. Other members of the BAG. Corp. family of companies include: FIBC Recycling, Inc., which cleans and reconditions FIBCs in a closed-loop system and disposes of bulk bags in an environmentally friendly manner; and Winzen Film, a specialty film extruder that also produces multi-filament thread and webbing.

Blending : Vibrations Revolutionize Mixing Technology

Plain City, OH -- By combining vibrations and simple design techniques a unique Vibratory Mixer has been developed by the Alb. Klein Technology Group of Plain City, Ohio. Without resorting to rotating parts such as augers, wheels, screws or paddles the novel Klein Vibratory Mixer can mix, blend or coat granular bulk materials with powders and liquids more efficiently and quicker than conventional mixers.

“After considerable development work we found that the Klein Vibratory Mixer is suited especially for applications requiring low or no shear mixing or coating” states Chris Doerschlag, President and GM of Alb. Klein Technology Group. “The state of the art machine” he says, “has no rotating parts in the mixing bowl and featuring a removable mixing bowl makes for easy cleaning.”

The Klein Vibratory Mixer is designed as a self contained, continuous batch mixing system complete with built-in bulk material metering hopper, liquid and powder metering systems and state of the art electronic controls for addition of precisely metered mix components and cycle functions, eliminating the need for additional equipment such as transfer pumps, level sensors or weigh scales.

In applications requiring even and consistent coating of granular bulk materials with viscous liquids the Klein Vibratory Mixer has demonstrated savings in coating materials of up to 30%. Short cycle times, measured in seconds, assure constantly freshly mixed material for processes requiring low exposure to atmospheric conditions to minimize material degradation before further processing of mixed batches.

Located in Central Ohio the Alb. Klein Technology Group specializes in providing standard and custom engineered solutions for various bulk material process systems utilizing their line of mixing equipment and their patented, low velocity PLUG FLO® pneumatic transporter systems.

Ceramics : Essential Discrimination of Fine and Coarse Particles

Malvern, UK -- Viaton Industries, one of Europe’s largest contract processors in the field of particle reduction, is using the Malvern Mastersizer 2000 particle size analyzer to control the production of advanced ceramics such as Barium Titanate and Magnesium Zirconate materials for its customer Thermograde Process Technology. The Mastersizer’s ability to accurately and reliably measure materials across a wide dynamic range has proved important in processing these products.

Thermograde Process Technology is a leading chemical processor specializing in high temperature inorganic solid-state reactions. Its Barium Titanate products are used as heavy metal scavengers in fuel cracking catalysts to preserve the activity of the main zeolite catalyst. Scavenging ability is related to particle size, with fine particles having a higher surface area and a higher reactivity rate.

Magnesium Zirconate is used in electro-ceramics, where particle size is important in defining the electrical properties of the fired ceramic and the strength of the ceramic film. The presence of coarse particles or agglomerates affects the mechanical strength of the component by causing defect formation during sintering.

The Mastersizer 2000 is used by Viaton to monitor and control many different improvisation processes and was selected by the company primarily for its ability to measure over a wide size range from 0.02 to 2000 microns, using either wet or dry sample dispersions. It is easy to use and requires minimal operator training.

Mr. Platt wants to unload 20-foot containers:

I am receiving HDPE powder in lined 20 foot containers which we will discharge into storage silos.

I am looking to lease unloading equipment in Southern China for this operation.
Does anyone know of companies in this area who lease this equipment.

Mr. Ghouse needs help with dust explosion:

Recently we had an explosion which rocked the inside our  BISPHENOL- A storage silo( 30 meters height , 600 cubic meters capacity) while transferring Bisphenol-A through a lean /dilute phase pneumatic transfer system with compressed air.

We have been transferring BPA in the same system for the past 6 years, but this time we had a different material with composition of particles in different size and with excessive dust which we believe have led to dust cloud with high concentration inside the silo and eventually blew up the silo resulting in a huge dust explosion. The transfer rate was comparatively high from the previous transfers as well as the silo was empty during the transfer. The drop height was almost the maximum this silo can have.  We are still investigating this problem to find out the actual reason. We are almost concluding that it may be due to ONE OF the following reasons.

1. The material was not uniform, had excessive dust/coarse/fines.
2. The transfer rate was high (12 tons in 40 minutes, explosion after 12 tons of transfer)
3. May be an auto ignition due to dust cloud formation in the silo with high concentration.

N.B:
a) The minimum threshold ignition energy of this material is between 1 to 3 milli-joules.
b) All the static grounds/bonds and earth pits are intact and maintained. Possibility of heat source from this system's equipment has been ruled out.

At this juncture, I would like to have the opinion and advice of people who have a thorough knowledge and experience in such dust explosions.  I would also welcome suggestions on averting such dust explosions in the future.

Md. Ghouse
