New Powder Flow Analyzer
Stable Micro Systems, a leading
designer and manufacturer of materials testing instrumentation, is
launching its revolutionary Powder Flow Analyzer at
Powtech-Technopharm this year. The Powder Flow Analyzer is being
hailed as industry's most accurate and reliable method of measuring
the flow characteristics of dry and wet powders. It will help
manufacturers avoid typical problems such as batch and source
variation of ingredients, caking during storage, bridging in hoppers
and sticking during production.
The
Powder Flow Analyzer can be used to assess any product capable of
flow - not just free-flowing powders. Samples are conditioned at the
beginning to eliminate any variations in loading, and the
precision-engineered, patented blade is then rotated through the
sample, causing "controlled flow". Sophisticated mixing
and testing cycles enable users to test their products in realistic
conditions. During a caking test, for instance, compaction of the
sample forms a cake-like layer of powder which can then be analyzed,
giving a good indication of how the sample may flow out of a silo
after prolonged storage.
Stable Micro Systems' Powder Flow
Analyzer is supplied with library tests so manufacturers can start
testing quickly and conveniently after straightforward installation
and calibration. Users can, however, fully program the instrument to
carry out slicing, shearing, compressing, compacting, mixing and
aerating cycles in any combination, and in any sequence. Test
sequences can be repeated ad infinitum to maximize accuracy and
repeatability.
Testing is possible with very small
sample volumes, minimizing both disruption and expense. These
samples are placed in a borosilicate glass sample vessel; allowing
users to monitor what is happening to the powder as the sample is
displaced. During the test, axial force, time and distance are
measured by a sensitive transducer and data is displayed and
analyzed in real time by 16 or 32 bit software. This allows
manufacturers to test characteristics such as mixing kinetics,
granule surface friction, resistance to compression and particle
cohesion after compaction. The results from different samples can be
ranked and compared to assess the impact of external conditions
including batch or source variation, humidity and moisture content,
surface properties, electrostatic charge and particle or granule
size, shape and distribution.
The Powder Flow Analyzer is supplied
with a renowned texture analyzer from Stable Micro Systems. The
TA.XT2i and TA.XTplus instruments are already used in over 4000
laboratories worldwide for various texture analysis tests in food,
chemicals, pharmaceuticals, personal care, paints and coatings and
other manufacturing industries. By simply changing the attachments
on the instrument, manufacturers can test semi-finished and finished
products.

Cleanest
Possible Seal-Fill Process
Smurfit-Stone to Exhibit Improved
Clean-Pak System
Chicago, IL - Smurfit-Stone Container
Corporation, an industry leader in paper and paperboard-based
packaging, will display the enhanced Clean-Pak, its newest
packer-mounted ultrasonic valve bag sealer, in Booth S2330 at Pack
Expo 2002, November 3-7 in Chicago.
Enhancements
include touch screen controls, multi-tube capability engineered
especially for Smurfit-Stone's 511 Valve Bag Applicator and remote
I/O function. These improvements provide centralized control, easily
allowing a single operator to oversee multiple sealer installations.
The Clean-Pak system is a unique
process for retracting the filling tube from a valve bag as the
retraction occurs immediately following the filling cycle as the bag
remains in place. The system provides the cleanest possible
filling/sealing process available because filling and ultrasonic
sealing occur in the same position, allowing effective dust
collection as the bag and filling tube separate. Only after sealing
is completed is the bag moved from its original location on the
packer.
"Valve bag packaging has reached
a new summit in cleanliness,” said Ken Goodworth, applications
engineering and marketing manager for Smurfit-Stone. “Dusty
products are now contained efficiently at the point of fill."
The Clean-Pak is ideal for most
applications, especially for high-end, dusty, powdered products.
This innovative system is tailored specifically for products like
carbon black, paint pigments, starch, flours and powdered sugars.

EXTON, PA, September 2002 — For the
high capacity dewatering applications, the Filtration Division of
Netzsch manufacturers Overhead Filter Presses. Without sacrificing
automation features, this new economical press design is available
in sizes 1000 mm to 2000 mm with operating pressures up to 450 psi.
Designed
for long life, low maintenance and simplicity of operation, this
press features controlled tracking for optimum alignment, allowing
pressure to be distributed evenly though out all of the plates.
Netzsch Overhead Filter Presses also offer plate shifters outside of
the potential spill areas, and optional automatic cloth washers for
optimal dewatering procedures. Free access to the filter plate pack
allows easy plate removal. In corrosive chemical environments,
stainless steel cladding can be added for increased protection of
the head end of the press and the metal follower plate.
All Netzsch filter presses are highly
efficient devices, designed to separate solids from liquids,
producing a dry cake and clear filtrate using a combination of feed
pressure and special filter plates and cloths. Netzsch Filtration
Systems are used in every major industry, including municipal and
industrial waste treatment, chemicals, mining, petrochemicals,
pharmaceuticals and food and beverage processing.
Netzsch Inc. is the North American
subsidiary of the globally operating group of Netzsch companies.
Netzsch is the world’s leading manufacturer of filtration systems,
progressing cavity pumps and wet grinding and dispersion equipment
and dry grinding and classification machines.

Mr. Chaille needs help with a
"caking" hopper:
I am working on coming up with a
solution to a feed hopper product caking issue.
We have 6 K-tron LIWs that feed a
Berstdorff 130mm extruder. The feeder that mainly feeds super
floss, feeds this material in to the top of the feed hopper cone in
a position that is allowing this product to build up on the side of
cone. When enough matter is deposited it will eventually drop
causing a lock up in the extruder or a batch of plastic pellets that
are out of spec.
Currently we have 3 pneumatic piston
vibrators attached to the cone. I have been told that these
are not getting the job done. I'm really wanting to stay away
from an internal agitator due to lack of space already.
