Avalanche in Hüttschlag: Three injured

Chronicle

An avalanche occurred on Tuesday afternoon near Hüttschlag (Pongau) on the hiking trail towards Schödersee. 6 people were buried and rescued. One person was rescued with serious injuries and two others with minor injuries.

After 2:30 pm, an avalanche occurred on the trek at an altitude of about 1,300 meters. Many are said to have been buried. Mountain rescue service Hüttschlag, Großarl (both Pongau) and mountain rescue dog handlers were alerted, and two rescue helicopter teams and one from the police were on duty.

The woman was seriously injured

A total of three injured people have so far been evacuated by rescue helicopters, one woman with very serious injuries. A total of six women and men were affected by the skiing avalanche, but they did not belong to a group whose origins are currently unknown.

High alpine high avalanche danger

The hiking trail to the Schödersee (1,440 m) is in the catchment area for avalanches. Due to the heavy snowfall in the past few days, there is a risk of avalanche in the high Alps. In the higher parts of the Northern Alps and in parts of the Hohe Tavern, more than 150 centimeters of snow had already fallen by 50 to 100 centimeters above 1,500 meters on Saturday afternoon. However, due to the relatively warm summers that have prevailed until recently, the snow is very poorly bound to the ground. Rising temperatures can trigger snowfall.

In a blog post from the weekend, the Salzburg Avalanche Warning Service warned of a continued increase in the risk of avalanches in the mountains this week. The Salzburg Mountain Rescue Service also urged caution. “Some of the new snow was blown by the wind. It has no contact with the ground and the wind carries a lot of snow. So we advise control and caution,” explained state manager Balthazar Leiter. In the coming days, there will be snow slopes or steep banks at any time on forestry and hiking trails. Expect avalanches from sliding snow.
