Hail WestPack : Jump Starts Machinery Sales
LOS
ANGELES -- Canon Communications reports extremely positive
results -- specifically a surge in machinery sales -- for
companies that exhibited at its recent WestPack show. Held
at the Anaheim Convention Center, the three-day exposition
and conference program attracted a record 14,579 buyers
seeking the latest in packaging machinery, equipment,
materials, and supplies.
One of many highlighted
areas at this year's WestPack event was machinery.
Exhibitor Bob Shelly, president of CVC Technologies,
discussed his show experience: "We go to a majority
of the main shows in the United States and around the
world and I've seen more serious buyers and more success
at this show than any other," said Shelly. "We
sold our entire line of equipment off the show
floor."
Tom Misik,
International/Medical Sales Manager of Belco Packaging,
agreed, "WestPack is vital to our bottom line.
Customers walking the show floor were able to compare our
machines with others on the market -- ultimately allowing
us to confirm machinery orders worth $450,000. We are so
pleased with these results, that we've enlarged our booth
at EastPack this June and are eagerly anticipating
WestPack in 2004!"
This year marked the first
time WestPack exhibited with co-located events Medical
Design & Manufacturing, Electronics West, Pacific
Design, and the PLASTEC West Pavilion. The entire event
brought in an astounding 38,763 attendees in total.
Next year's WestPack --
which is already 70% sold out -- will return to the
Anaheim Convention Center, January 6-8, 2004. More
information about the 2004 show can be found at www.westpackshow.com
Additionally, packaging
professionals interested in gaining exposure in the
Southeast market should attend SouthPack, April 30-May 1
at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, Georgia.
And EastPack, June 2-4 at the Jacob Javits Center in New
York will offer expanded coverage of the Northeast
packaging market.
Produced and managed by
Canon Communications LLC, WestPack is part of Canon's
worldwide family of trade events that includes the
SouthPack, EastPack, and MidPak packaging shows.
Information about them can be found at www.canontradeshows.com

| Milestone :
BHA Produces One-Millionth PulsePleat Filter
KANSAS
CITY, MO - BHA announced that it has achieved a milestone
in the industrial filtration market by manufacturing the
one-millionth PulsePleat pleated filter element.
PulsePleat filter elements
are one-piece pleated filter designs for use in industrial
fabric filter dust collectors. PulsePleat filters replace
traditional bags and cages and offer up to 3 times more
filtration area in the same housing. These filters are
available in a variety of media and construction options,
and are custom manufactured to fit all types of pulse-jet
dust collector designs. BHA produces PulsePleat elements
from its plants in the United States and Europe.
QIT, located in Quebec,
Canada, received a commemorative “golden PulsePleat”
in recognition of the steel company’s PulsePleat order
that put BHA over the one million mark. Louis Palazzo,
senior environmental engineer at QIT said, “PulsePleat
filters have been an excellent upgrade for our dust
collection systems. We enjoy working with the people at
BHA and we congratulate them on this achievement.”
Jim Thome, Executive Vice
President and Chief Operating Officer of BHA, said, “BHA
has a long history of producing innovative products. The
PulsePleat line is not just innovative, it’s
revolutionary. Since the mid-90’s when we first
introduced it, we have constantly tested and improved the
product to meet customer demands for efficiency and
performance. Reaching the one million milestone is a
compliment to the product, the BHA people who manufacture
it, and to our customers who have adopted it. We thank our
customers, suppliers, and employees who continue to be
part of the PulsePleat success and we now look forward to
reaching the two million unit milestone.”
The most recent innovation
to the PulsePleat line is the iPLAS™ pleat retention
system. This uses an extruded polymer instead of fabric
straps to keep the pleats evenly spaced and maintain
filter integrity during use. According to Thome, “The
iPLAS technology is a major advancement in the pleated
filtration market. It puts PulsePleat elements way ahead
of any other competing product. iPLAS helped us achieve
our one million goal this year.”
BHA Group, Inc., the
primary subsidiary of BHA Group Holdings, Inc. , is the
world’s largest replacement parts manufacturer and
service provider for industrial air pollution control
systems. BHA serves customers in more than 50 different
industries and has manufacturing and service facilities
worldwide.

Push of a
Button : Quadro Ytron Powder Inductor Disperser
Waterloo,
Ontario -- The Quadro Ytron Powder Induction Disperser
(PID) is designed to convey and disperse difficult-to-wet
powders into solution in a single pass with the push of a
button. The PID can be used continuously as part of an
in-line process or as part of a batch process.
The PID uses a
combination of two technologies to incorporate and
disperse powders into liquid. The first technology is the
use of a powder inductor to convey and pre-wet the powders
prior to dispersion. The second stage uses Quadro Ytron's
proven ZC technology to disperse the powder into solution.
Benefits of
the PID
-
Convey
powders with a wand, from a bag dump station or bulk
bag unloader without auxiliary equipment.
-
Single
pass dispersion of the most difficult to disperse
powders. Cleanability from batch to batch.
-
No powder
build up in the eductor or in the disperser housing.
The PID
product discharge has a 3:1 turndown capability that
allows the concentration of the powders to adjusted.
Operator friendly, complete skid package. Principle of
Operation PI and ZC Reactor The PID consists of a high
pressure supply pump, Powder Inductor, ZC disperser
reactor head and positive displacement discharge pump. The
fixed speed high pressure supply pump increases the supply
pressure through the venturi of the PI creating a negative
pressure to draw in the powders.
The powder /
liquid slurry passes through the ZC reactor head ensuring
a homogeneous mix of the two components, which is then
discharged via the discharge pump. Shear is applied to the
product by pre-wetting the powders in the PI with a highly
atomized liquid and then subjecting them to intense
mechanical shear as they pass through the close tolerance
high speed multiple tooth rotor/stator in the ZC reactor
housing ensuring a maximum yield, lump free solution.

Mr. Pavlich
drive-over, lime hopper & conveyor:
I am working with a client
who has two locations that receive 150,000 to 250,000 TPY
of pebble lime via pneumatic truck. We believe that bottom
dump trucks would save a considerable amount of time and
money for the trucking contractor.
I am trying to locate
companies that have experience in providing covered
drive-over dumping and conveying facilities with
appropriate dust control equipment. If you know of such
firms or installations, I would appreciate the
contact. (Click

Ken Pavlich

Mr. Cullen needs help
with dust from discharge chute:
The Application: Fine
solids/sand mixture is discharged from a gas/solids
separator into a sump via an inclined chute. The chute is
fitted with two slide valves which open and close
alternately (according to a control cycle) when level in
the separator gets too high. The solids drop into the sump
where they are slurried with water. The gas is chlorine
and must be contained for obvious reasons. At present this
is achieved by maintaining a level of solids in the
separator to act as a seal.
The problem is when solids
are dumped from the separator into the sump, dust, and
some chlorine gas entrained in the solids, is released.
The sump lid is not airtight. An extraction/scrubber
system is fitted but struggles to contain all emissions.
I could upgrade the
scrubber system but believe the root cause is the rapid
descent of the solids and subsequent displacement of air.
The lower of the two slides can't go any lower to limit
the height of fall and, while a rotary valve would control
the feed rate, it seems it may not be sufficient to
contain chlorine sufficiently. (Click
